In assuming most men going on holiday alone to Thailand, are going to have sex with prostituted women or men?

It is estimated that about 1% of Thailand's GDP is earned through sexual exploitation tourism.

In 2003 (the last year for which full figures are available) some 545,000 British residents arrived on visits. If you remove the children, and the British citizens visiting for business or reasons other than a holiday, you arrive at about 489,000—314,000 men and 175,000 women. That is 139,000 more British men than women coming to Thailand for a holiday—a gap of 28 per cent.

In no other international holiday destination, is there such a big difference in the number of women and men travelling there. There is no obvious reason for this apart from prostitution.

I've been to Thailand. To Bangkok. Met lots of single male travellers who did not want sex and had no interest in the sex industry.

HollyMiamiFLA · 15/02/2014 15:47

Who knows?

But I bet it's not just for sex.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 15/02/2014 15:47

Golf, drugs, diving. Perhaps the reputation of the place puts women off.

HollyMiamiFLA · 15/02/2014 15:48

My Dad went to Phuket. For the beach.
I would be shocked if he went for the sex.

HollyMiamiFLA · 15/02/2014 15:50

In my male days ( Grin, I went to Thailand.

No sex. With anyone. Not interested. Nice diving and temples though.

NigellasDealer · 15/02/2014 15:51

well there is the general availability of hard and soft drugs but that could just be the circles i mix in Grin

HollyMiamiFLA · 15/02/2014 15:51

But that could be down to brain wiring though. Grin

HollyMiamiFLA · 15/02/2014 15:52

I've seen Bangkok Hilton. Drugs and Thailand don't mix.

NigellasDealer · 15/02/2014 15:52

that is not what all my friends who visited told me

harticus · 15/02/2014 15:54

Where does this data actually come from?
Why no links?

HollyMiamiFLA · 15/02/2014 15:54

Should watch the film. But yes, I think you can get drugs in Thailand Grin

NigellasDealer · 15/02/2014 15:56

Grin yers.....
actually one of our 'group' OD'd in a hotel room in Bangkok now i think of it.
but i digress.

HollyMiamiFLA · 15/02/2014 15:56

Grennie

There is no doubt prostitution and under age prostitution is alive and well in Thailand. And males are a big part of the problem.

That's the issue. But I think you are making an incorrect assumption. Being assumed guilty.

Would you assume my 50 yr old Dad went there for sex and prostitution?

NigellasDealer · 15/02/2014 15:57

actually holly yes i would assume that, no offence to your dad.

ivykaty44 · 15/02/2014 15:57

I have been to Thailand a couple of times and it is a beautiful country, I encouraged my father to have a two week stay travelling by train through thailand and malaysia and Singopore on his way to Australia as I wanted him to see just how beautiful it was.

Op you think what you like about my motives for encouraging my father to experience a beautiful country

I have travelled there with two small children as it is such a friendly place with fantastic culture and we had a great time, perhaps because I had travelled there when single and along I knew how lovely it was and what I was letting myself in for.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 15/02/2014 15:58

I would assume he went for the drugs. ;)

HollyMiamiFLA · 15/02/2014 15:58

That's a bit sad though. I don't think it even occurred to him. He just wanted a beach holiday.

It's like a man being thought of being a paedophile because he wants to work with children.

HollyMiamiFLA · 15/02/2014 15:59

john

My dad was part of the 60s. Sex, drugs and rock and roll.

I think he saw the Beatles. That was his 60s. Grin

HollyMiamiFLA · 15/02/2014 16:01

AIBU to assume a woman standing by herself on a road in the evening in the Calls part of Leeds is a prostitute?

Would you want someone to assume that?

ateddybearfromdelaware1 · 15/02/2014 16:04

From stories I've heard yanbu, sadly.

My best friend went with her dh. Even when they were walking together girls would approach and say 'Full sex five pounds'

Grim and sad.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/02/2014 16:05

I think you're getting confused with the difference between one individual and a statistically significant majority.

I'm sure individual people we all know didn't go there to exploit others.

I'm also sure that the majority did.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 15/02/2014 16:05

Ah he sounds lovely holly.

I got my dad to meet me for a trip to Thailand once. Everywhere we went people assumed we were a couple. They kept offering us the honeymoon room. Ewww.
But it is a lovely country.

HollyMiamiFLA · 15/02/2014 16:07

Well - he's actually incredibly sexist and thinks women should wait on him hand and foot.

But I would be really surprised if he went for the sex.

Lazy OP... thread about a thread.

Who knows why people go anywhere or do anything. Not I - and not you.
