to just not get How I Met Your Mother?

I've only seen 3 or 4 episodes so hardly an avid viewer but I really don't get it. I find it so unfunny that I'm not convinced it's not a parody of a comedy show. Like, painfully unfunny. As far as I can see, there's not a single laugh in it. I watch the Big Bang Theory at every opportunity and laugh my head off, then HIMYM comes on and it's..........oh. Channel change time.

What do you enjoy about it?

I love it- but there are some episodes that are quite dull. Others more than make up for it though; I do think it gets better as it goes along (bar this final series, it's awful!). I like the story more than anything and seeing the clues which lead up to how Ted met the mum.

Cactuar · 31/01/2014 12:48

YANBU - I think the problem is most (if not all) of the characters are so unlikeable. Also find the show's whole attitude towards women really dubious.

basgetti · 31/01/2014 12:50

I don't get it either. It isn't funny and the characters aren't likeable. Although I have to say I'm also rapidly going off Big Bang Theory which I used to love. I got complete box set of Frasier for Xmas so I think I'm comparing everything else a bit unfavourably at the moment!

teenagetantrums · 31/01/2014 12:51

YANBU, my teens love it, it drives me made, i am very happy that the last series is about to be on and we get to see how he met the bloody mother. I just think its a rip off of friends which i didn't mind to much.

squoosh · 31/01/2014 12:52

I hate it OP!

Granted there are some good lines, but the characters are so unlikeable. Ted and his quest for The One is so fucking annoying. He's portrayed as a sweet romantic guy who's looking for an old fashioned love story whilst in actual fact he's a smug cunt who treats a lot of his conquests pretty shabbily.

It's desperate to be Friends, but none of the characters are likeable enough.

I hope Ted dies alone, in poverty and loneliness.

tilliebob · 31/01/2014 12:52

I don't get lots of programmes - mainly soaps, SATC, ANTM, Breaking whatever and that's just off the top of my head. Some of mates can't get the stuff I like. Who cares? That's what the zillion channels are available for, something for everyone. I don't get How I Met Your Mother either, btw!

FloweryFeatureWall · 31/01/2014 12:53

I reckon it depends what episodes you've seen. Series 1 and 2 are awful and then around series 3 is where I thought it got good.

I still remember when it first came to e4 and they touted it as the "new friends" and was it fuck.

CreditCardProblemS · 31/01/2014 12:54

YANBU. It's watchable but really unfunny with such unlikeable characters. Who the fuck even cares who their mother is anyway? Poor woman ending up with needy ted.

MajesticWhine · 31/01/2014 12:54

What age do you lot think it is suitable for? I have banned 11 yr old DD from watching because I heard something on the programme I didn't like. But I can't actually remember what it was I didn't like Confused. She keeps sneakily watching it thinking I won't find out, it has become a bit of a battleground.

Lottapianos · 31/01/2014 12:55

'I hope Ted dies alone, in poverty and loneliness'

Wow squoosh you really hate it! Grin

Frasier is truly wonderful basgetti - it's very sophisticated and the characters are fabulous and it's consistently hilarious.

I LOVE HIMYM just started a thread in telly addicts.

The mother isn't what I expected her to be like personality wise and really hope barney and Robin get their happily ever after.

The writers announced a main cast member will die at the end. I wonder who it could be.

Cactuar · 31/01/2014 12:57

squoosh Grin could not agree more!

Straitjacket · 31/01/2014 13:07

DP usually puts it on if there is nothing else on to watch, but I get really confused because it tends to not be in the order of which they have been showed. One minute Ted and Robin are together, the next Barney and Robin, then Ted and Robin have slept together again, then Barney is trying to get Robin jealous or something. Then the blonde from Scrubs has finished with Ted. Then they are happily in love.

Pah. I never know what is going on with that programme. Never mind who the bloody Mother is!

ComposHat · 31/01/2014 13:30

With the exception of Fraizer, Cheers and more recently Parks & Rec, I find most mainstream American sitcoms leave me cold. Even Seinfeld which people raved over.

Tw & a hslf men? How the fuck is thst claptrap thr most watched comedy in the states?

Helpyourself · 31/01/2014 13:36

I don't find it very funny, and (prude alert) I find the easy come, easy go relationships and one night stands inappropriate for the time it's shown. It's targeted at the Simpsons/ Big Bang audience but the content is much more adult.

HesterShaw · 31/01/2014 13:39

Not funny. Not entertaining. It doesn't have the charm and characters Friends had. That it's on with Big Bang, which has both those, makes it look worse.

TulipOHare · 31/01/2014 13:42

I watched the first two or three series last year and quite liked it. Wasn't crazy about it but it was OK as light, no-thought entertainment.

Then I found, in quick succession, Community, Parks & Rec and Arrested Development. And I think they broke me. I am spoiled for comedy forever now, nothing else is as funny Grin HIMYM seems unbearably clunky in comparison.

FloweryFeatureWall · 31/01/2014 13:44

I do think sometimes it seems to lose track of who it's aimed at. Some episodes are a lot ruder than other ones and seem out of sync with the whole programme and there's been a few things Barney has said that have made me almost double take.

TheSurgeonsMate · 31/01/2014 13:47

YANBU. Not at all funny. When it comes on I shout at Alyson Hannigan "What are you doing? You were Willow ffs, Willow." After that, I leave the room. I imagine JPH fans have similar moments, although to be fair there seems to be a bit more to his character than hers in it.

Fakebook · 31/01/2014 13:50

I watched one episode and it was shit. I've never liked another American sitcom since Friends finished.

Trills · 31/01/2014 13:52

Why would it be unreasonable to not like or not see the appeal of a particular television show?

OodlesofOodles · 31/01/2014 13:52

It never seems to be running in sequence. I'm totally confused at who is with who!

Trills · 31/01/2014 13:53

He's portrayed as a sweet romantic guy who's looking for an old fashioned love story whilst in actual fact he's a smug cunt who treats a lot of his conquests pretty shabbily.

I think you would love a bit of GetOrf and "why Ross from Friends is a twat".

somedizzywhore1804 · 31/01/2014 13:57

Ah no I love it!!

I think it's really clever how we as the audience have put all the pieces together to work out how he met their mother.

Yeah Ted is a bit of an arse but Marshall is a great character and so is Barney.

It's got some great running gags too.

LangenFlugelHappleHoff · 31/01/2014 14:12

flyAwayToMalibu it'll be one of Teds kids - out of boredom! Grin
