When do you stop? When they leave home - or what?

My two are 6 and 10 and I can't ever see myself stopping them! The sacks at the end of the bed will prob stop when they're adults and 'all grown up' but the stockings never will! Grin

Still18atheart · 25/12/2013 00:12

My mum still makes me one

I also still provide port, mince pie and carrot to santa mum

still baffles me what she does with it all as she doesnt like mince pies and the carrots are always reasonably nibbled at.

Tbh I think it's something that will always will be done as it always as been done and it's part of our family's christmas tradition

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 25/12/2013 00:14

I have just finished putting things in stockings for my parents, children, husband, brother and grandmother.

You are never too old for a stocking. Grin

Dawndonnaagain · 25/12/2013 00:16

Just finished the stockings. 29, 19, 17 year old twins.
(I'm 55 but don't bother anymore).

PrincessPeashooter · 25/12/2013 00:17

Stockings are the best bit of Christmas, they're better than the main present. I'm Xmas Sad when I hear people don't get one.

I'm 37 btw. Visiting my best friend in Russia for New Year and being Xmas Shock at finding out he has never had a stocking he is finally getting one from Ded Moroz (Russian Father Frost who comes at New Year).

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 25/12/2013 00:19

So those of you doing it for everyone in the family including your own parents, how many stockings can one person end up having? Does the host do them for all guests, or does everyone do one for everyone else?

SockQueen · 25/12/2013 00:47

I still get one at 29, "little" sis is 25. Santa has started doing one for DH for the last few years when we've spent Christmas at my parents'. I expect they'll stop if/when we have children.

Sixgeese · 25/12/2013 01:13

I took my parents 'stocking' around to their house earlier, they had hidden my Dsis stocking at her house a week ago, before she announced two days ago that she and her family were coming to stay Christmas Eve - Boxing Day with my parents, o it has to come back

I do 5 stockings, 3DC, DH and DP, DH and DP both add to a stocking for me, my Dsis just does for her DC, my DP do for my Grandma (aged 88), and Dsis and her DH and add to mine.

It sort of works for my family, this way we all get some small presents to open in the morning before we do the rest of the gifts together after lunch.

The first year I went to DPIL's house for Christmas we did them a stocking too, but as they looked at me as if I was mad we haven't done one since.

Now I am off to put the DC stockings on their beds.

Christmas2013 · 25/12/2013 01:24

My sister and I are 30 and 33 and we still get one, as does her dp who will be spending Christmas Day with us.
This year we have done one each for our parents (mainly her work I admit!) and I have had to stay awake to sneak them downstairs as they will definitely be awake before me - all good fun!
We get a mix of silly things like chocolate coins and useful things like socks and nail varnish.

ChatNicknameUnavailable · 25/12/2013 01:46

I am 27 and my mum still does one for me. Since df and I have been together she does a joint one, for both of us.

TinyDiamond · 25/12/2013 01:49

Oh please never stop. My Dad has reinstated the stocking this year for everyone. I'm 26.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 25/12/2013 01:52

never.
I have forced encouraged DH to get with the program and whoever stays here gets a stocking whether they have ever had one or not.

It is one of my best bits of christmas..

EBearhug · 25/12/2013 01:56

Ours stopped at 18. But I got one last year, staying with cousins, and it was really exciting and unexpected.

It had stuff like a jar of posh pate, which I wouldn't have appreciated as a child.

PolkaDotParty · 25/12/2013 02:27

Me and DSis have just done our parents' (in their 60s), DH has done mine(33) and me his,(38). Am waiting for dsis to stop faffing so can plant hers (29)!

Chottie · 25/12/2013 05:46

We are a household of 65, 58, 37, 36, 32 and 7 months and we all get stockings. It wouldn't be Christmas without a stocking Xmas Smile

My parents still do them for us and have no intention of stopping either. DTs stockings have the smallest presents in there like chocolate coins, stickers etc. They get to open these before breakfast (or eat the chocolate in place of breakfast) and we do the big stuff after.

oldbaghere · 25/12/2013 06:30

I still do,them for mine. The line of cheesy tat stockings on the sofa is comforting

OhMerGerd · 25/12/2013 06:42

Phew... Mission accomplished! Just crept back upstairs from putting DDs 23 & 17 Stockings( now filled) by the chimney breast ... Carrot half eaten ( by Rudolph) and Santa's wine drunk ... Plus obligatory mud on carpet where muddy boots and hooves have been.
As long as my girls have a mummy the stocking will keep coming... Merry Christmas everyone!
Oooh I am excited now... Might have to accidentally wake them up in a bit ... Tee hee.

catwithflowers · 25/12/2013 06:42

My kids have a sock each with sweets in, a tangerine and a pound coin but that's all I put in a 'stocking'

elQuintoConyo · 25/12/2013 06:44

Never had one until I made one for myself, DH and DS when he was born, so 3 years. They will come out every year.
They currently hold some lovely Lindt chocolates and whichever gifts are small enough to fit, I wouldn't buy gifts especially for the stocking.

Rosieliveson · 25/12/2013 06:52

I had one until I was about 18 at home. Then when I moved in with DH he still had one from his mum. She even sent me one the first year. It was so lovely that DH and I now do a stocking for each other. Anyone grrr on Christmas eve gets a full stocking and usually brings done stocking fillers for the others too. Am another one who has just put out DS's stocking for the first time. He's 16 weeks so hasn't a clue but I was so excited stuffing the little pressies in there Grin

Rosieliveson · 25/12/2013 06:52

*anyone here

CherryLips1980 · 25/12/2013 06:54

I still have one when we visit my parents. I'm 33 Blush

Birdsgottafly · 25/12/2013 07:01

I never did Stockings, I did Christmas Eve Hampers, or rather large gift bags.

My eldest is 28, her DP slightly older, they still get one. She puts up more than one tree and it has become usual for me and my other two children to go to hers late afternoon and dress a tree together.

I celebrate Christmas as a Winter-festival and the mark the Solstice, so a tree is an important symbol.

I don't think that traditions have to ever stop, or it's never to late to start new ones, as the family ages, or once you have your own house.
