When do you stop? When they leave home - or what?

I put small presents in their stockings. And lots of sweets and chocolates too. And socks. Grin

500internalerror · 24/12/2013 23:24

I'd rather have a stocking from dh than a proper present, as he'd have to really think about what to put in it. That would mean so much more. He'll never do it though!!

UsedToBeNDP · 24/12/2013 23:24

We don't do them here and never have, but my best friend is 30 and her mum still does her one every year (she's not lived at home since she was 16).

piratecat · 24/12/2013 23:25

in ten bloody minutes if she doesn't go to sleep!

wetaugust · 24/12/2013 23:25

Must have chocolate coins in it.

Terrys chocolate orange has also become a tradition to have in it.

CalamitouslyWrong · 24/12/2013 23:25

Oh and you whack something akin to an orange in the toe. We've got clementines.

OryxCrake · 24/12/2013 23:26

My two are 24 and 19. Each year I wonder whether it should be the last stocking year but I love doing them and they enjoy them so I can't see us stopping any time soon.

MrsKoala, from threads on here there seem to be lots of ways of doing stockings. We've always done it so that the stockings (fairly big) are the Father Christmas presents, wrapped but unlabelled, and are a mixture of useful stuff - socks, hair products, toothbrushes etc - tat/fun stuff, a book or two and some sweets. Then the rest of the presents from us and other friends and relatives go under the tree.

Stockings are great. Not doing stockings is also fine. Every family has their own way of doing Christmas and there's no right, wrong, normal or not normal!

FracturedViewOfLife · 24/12/2013 23:27

I've never had one Sad I might buy one for next year.

Glitterfeet · 24/12/2013 23:31

My Mum did one for me until I left home. From my teens it contained just a few things like socks, chocolate and bubble bath.

AmberLeaf · 24/12/2013 23:31

Never!

I am pushing 40 and I have under my tree a stocking that my Dad and step Mum did for me!

My eldest is 17 and would be very upset if he didn't get a stocking.

Not expensive stuff, sweets, chocolates, a book, socks and other little bits...not forgetting the obligatory satsuma!

gordyslovesheep · 24/12/2013 23:32

my mum stopped mine when I got married at 30 Grin until then Farther Christmas always left one at her house

TalkinPeace · 24/12/2013 23:33

my kids would hit the roof if I stopped theirs (13 and 15)

mostly junk food, the obligatory satsuma and raisins wrapped in silver foil and some silly toys from Hawkin

LOVE the idea of moving over to booze and practical "hall of residence" stuff as they get older

they still sit on the end of the bed to show us what Santa got them (leaves no room for us)

MajesticWhine · 24/12/2013 23:34

I get one from DH and one from MIL. I would like to keep doing it for my DC when they are grown up, if they still want one.

happytalk13 · 24/12/2013 23:35

When you decide to stop?

Gossipmonster · 24/12/2013 23:36

Thankyou for reminding me about the coins!!! I struggle to think what else to put in but like the idea of practical stuff like underwear and socks etc.

Will do better next year even though DS1 will be 17!!!

I've not had one since I left home at 17. My sisters are now in their 30s with partners and kids but they stil get one. It's very hurtful.
I do all five of mine one, they range from 29 to 2 Grin

rallytog1 · 24/12/2013 23:39

I'm 35 and my mum still does me one every year Blush

notonmyplanet · 24/12/2013 23:43

Never in this house too. Oldest DC is 22, youngest 12, 14 year old DC has special needs and still very much believes in Santa, hence I am now sitting here waiting for them to go to sleep!!

BerryChristmas · 24/12/2013 23:43

We are a household of: 68, 48, 28 and 23. We ALL get stockings Grin

dancingwithmyselfandthecat · 24/12/2013 23:47

My mother does an "adult pillowcase" (not as dodgy as it sounds) for Xmas day nowadays. She fills it with boxes of chocolates and treats and everyone pulls one out. Its a lovely thing.

SilverApples · 24/12/2013 23:48

My adult children still have stockings. Next year they are going to make one each for me and OH.

CremolaFirCone · 24/12/2013 23:51

Just put out dds stocking. She's 18 and isn't expecting it. She'll love all the tat I've put in it. Silly things and chocolate and the contents of a soap and glory gift .
A bit of fun for tomorrow morning.

iloveny001 · 24/12/2013 23:57

I've not had a stocking for 20 years sulks
This year my sister did me a lucky dip advent bag which was filled with 24 mini pressies, picked one out a day and unwrapped! Better than a chocolate advent calander and I no longer miss the absent stocking.

Whatdoiknowanyway · 25/12/2013 00:01

Mine are 21 and 20. No plans to stop ever.

honeybeeridiculous · 25/12/2013 00:07

My DC are 24,23 & 16 & they all get a stocking,& come the morning at a sensible time (unlike years ago!)we shall all sit on our bed and open pressies. Gets very cramped as 16 year old is 6foot3! But I love it Xmas Grin
