AIBU ... to STILL feel positively evangelical about electronic cigarettes? [thread 2]

magimedi · 15/11/2013 22:02

Here we go with thread two.

There is a great deal of information on Thread One about vaping :

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1865547-to-feel-positively-evangelical-about-electronic-cigarettes?pg=1

I think that many of us have been able to give up smoking thanks to e-cigs & vaping & are all feeling the positive results & want to spread the message.

Send her this link

There was another recent study that's relevant to this as well, I'll try and dig it out later.

I'd also be tempted to post on the vaping forums and get word out so that youngsters who have used ecigs to stop smoking can share their positive stories with her Wink

LucyLasticBand · 07/01/2014 12:56

dds friend, aged 13/14 was vapping somethign weird beginning with S, at the bus stop. DD has told me about them, and i think tried them, turns out they dont contain nicotine. I asked her friend if they contained nicotine cos i was quite shocked, they looked veyr similar to mine. but he said his mum would Kill him if it did!

DizzyZebra · 07/01/2014 12:58

I am not happy enough to form an articulate response. I'm going to post to the surverys that have been done thought that concluded its not an "issue" at all and that even teens who tried them weren't going on the long term use.

I am going to say something when i get back from dropping boy one off at nursery

LucyLasticBand · 07/01/2014 13:00

my local shop has a big notice saying Over 18s, only, and the web sites i believe say for over 18s

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 07/01/2014 13:11

Lucy, was it shisha? they don't have any nicotine.

Currently there is no law to stop sales to under 18's yet, as you say Lucy, the market is doing its best to self-regulate on this.

Age restrictions have been taken out of the latest draft TPD and it will be up to member states to set age limits, as is the case with tobacco, I think.

I think we should have an age limit on ecig sales. I just can't understand the big hooha compared with the complete lack of hooha about underage sales of actual tobacco.

LucyLasticBand · 07/01/2014 14:05

yes it was a shisha. now that is a sneaky jump on the band wagon if there ever was.

Cantabile · 07/01/2014 18:17

I have a friend who is into the idea of mixing his own so I've shown him lots of links from these threads, and so on. I do have one question about the unflavoured nicotine liquid. You can get it in PG, VG or AG solution. I know PG is throat hit and VG vapour, but you're mixing it into either of those (in whatever proportions) too, so does it make a lot of difference which type of nicotine solution you get?

Also, what is AG?

DizzyZebra · 07/01/2014 18:21

Ice asked her if they will be passing on any under 18s names to their local vendor since most wouldn't sell to under 18s, and if she will be including the information from various studies that already show very little evidence of children using e cigs. Also reminded her it isn't smoking.

Cantabile · 07/01/2014 18:56

Dizzy, maybe you could send us all the link so we can put her straight too - naicely, of course! What an idiot! All dd's peers (14 and thereabouts) are either violently against any and all drugs, including ecigs, or are well into trying anything they could get so would scorn ecigs as they could have 'real' ones instead.

I was chatting to a guy today who didn't know much about them. He said the only thing he wouldn't like would be if he and bf were in a restaurant and a large party - hen or stag do - were all to 'light up' and then he'd be surrounded by smoke just as if the party were smoking fags. I demonstrated how quickly the vapour evaporates, challenged him to smell it, and he was a little mollified.

Mind you, I could understand that in a smallish restaurant, if 30 odd people started vaping it might make a bit of a fug for other diners. I think we need to try to be thoughtful and courteous about it. (My other friend didn't agree with me at all, though Grin.) Worth thinking about?

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 07/01/2014 19:00

Yeah I wouldn't vape around food, just out of politeness.

Well done Dizzy Flowers Let us know if she replies.

DizzyZebra · 07/01/2014 19:41

Its a page called Ldn newsfeatures

I dont know if its one person who runs it, ive spoken to a woman from it on the phone before. They sell stories to the daily fail, take a break etc.

Haha. I tend to avoid vaping certain liquids in my mums car as step mum doesnt like some of them and says they make her chest go funny (She does have severe problems though). My mum says they dont effect her. I test them on my mum to see if she can smell them strongly and then avoid using the stronger smelling ones in public indoors.

My mum much prefers me vaping. She swore blind it wouldn't last and i'd start smoking again. Made me more determined lol i HATE people being condescending to me.

Loving this gingerbread from joose juice. I read online that gingerbread is usually ok without steeping so i was too impatient to wait as it was lol. It had a slightly perfumey taste to it at first but it ok now and tastes lovely.

The others are sitting in the cupboard, this morning only the gingerbrea was a darker colour, all the others were clear and 3 others have started to darken now so hoping they are ready soon. Tried the blueberry and it tasted like soap haha so definitely needs leaving for a few days!

McNo · 07/01/2014 20:49

Hey hope u don't mind another question from a newbieConfused

I have just realised that the liquid iv ordered will need to be steeped, is it still usable without steeping? I ordered apple, strawberry, tobacco and bubblegum from joosejuice

Allergictoironing · 07/01/2014 21:04

McNo - it will be useable in that you'll be able to vape it & get your nicotine hit, but the flavour may be a bit odd.

Also depends very much on where you ordered it from as some liquids have been made up overseas & imported complete (so did their steeping during shipping) whereas others are made to order in the UK so are very "fresh" and ARE likely to need steeping.

Allergictoironing · 07/01/2014 21:07

Bah posted too early! Meant to add that some flavours seem to be OK almost straight away, while others seem to want more or less amounts of steeping time.

Try them when they arrive, and if they don't taste great leave them for a few days & try again. Some may well be fine on day one though Smile

QueenStromba · 07/01/2014 21:18

I hadn't heard of AG so had to google it - apparently it's watered down VG which makes sense if you're using it by itself because it's very gloopy.

Whether it makes a difference which base he buys depends on the strength of the nicotine, what strength he wants to make and what ratio of PG:VG he wants.

I vape about 1.35% nicotine at 50:50 PG:VG. To me it makes no difference if I buy PG or VG base at 2.7% because either way I just need to add the same amount of the other one. If I wanted 80:20 PG:VG then I would need to buy a PG base if it was 2.7% - if it was 7% then it wouldn't matter. Equally, if I wanted 50:50 and anything higher than 1.35% then I would need to buy a higher strength nicotine than 2.7%.

In practice I would go for a PG base since most people prefer more PG than VG in their liquids. It's also easier to get hold of pharma/food grade VG - it's just glycerine that you can buy from the chemist or the baking aisle in the supermarket. PG needs to be bought from vaping suppliers or on ebay.

McNo · 07/01/2014 21:27

Thank youSmile

Revenger · 07/01/2014 21:32

Hi. I hope nobody minds if I join?

I've been dubious about vaping until a colleague let me try their ecig. I was surprised how good it was!

I've read some of this thread but I'm finding it all really confusing. There are no vape shops near me to go and try the kit.

So what will I need to get started? How do you know how much nicotine to add? I've clicked on some of the links on this thread but I'm not really sure what I should be buying or of the terminology.

Sorry for all the questions. I really need to quit smoking and fast. I've tried many times before but always fail.

DizzyZebra · 07/01/2014 21:45

I'm on my phone so cant link because my phone doesn't let me on mn for some reason. So im sure someone else will advise on kits.
Really it depends on how much you want to spend though.

You can get perfectly good start kits on amazon for a fiver, or you can buy something a bit fancier. If you just want a basic device id go with the ce4 kits on amazon (buy two so you have a spare battery). I wouldn't bother shelling out for a name as in my experience places like totally wicked aren't actually better quality devices (ive broken every tw product ive had).

As far as liquid and nicotine goes, the pre made bottles come in varying strengths. I smoked around twenty a day and started with 1.8% (18 mg) nicotine. I think 18 is a good starting point for most. If its not enough buy stronger, if it starts irritating your throat or you just feel you don't need that much buy a lower strength.

QueenStromba · 07/01/2014 21:46

Meant to say that PG and VG are really expensive from vaping shops so ebay is much cheaper for PG and Boots is much cheaper for VG. I bought a litre of PG off ebay for not much more than the cost of 100ml from Liberty Flights. You'd get 5x200ml bottles of glycerin in Boots for the same price as the litre of PG from ebay which is much more convenient and you don't need to buy in high quantities to get a good deal.

QueenStromba · 07/01/2014 21:54

I would go with two of these. Each battery should last you the best part of a day.

Joose Juice are popular for liquids and reasonably priced. I'd suggest a bit of a selection of the 10ml - one or two from the fruit section, one or two from the sweet section and a minty one, coffee one and tobacco one if you think you might like them. 18mg is a good starting point for strength.

Cantabile · 07/01/2014 22:00

Thanks Queen.

McNo, I started using the apple flavour immediately and it was fine. Can't remember where I got it from though, but they're probably all pretty similar (inborne gasps of breath as Cantabile is drummed off the thread for heresy....).

I can't find Caramel flavour on Joose Juice! I'm sure that's where it came from. (I lent all my favourite flavours to my friend as he had nothing to vape, but I think he'll have finished that one judging by his face when he tried it!). Please don't say they've stopped doing it.

McNo · 07/01/2014 22:14

Thanks Cantabile will try apple first.

Didn't notice caramel when I was on the site or that would have been one of my choices Wink

QueenStromba · 07/01/2014 22:15

I've found that the more complex flavours need some steeping but most don't. Tropical fruit flavours need it but normal fruit flavours don't, for example.

Cantabile · 07/01/2014 23:16

McNo, I've just checked back on this thread and it was sent to me by Maggie, who says it came from Vaping Vision. Well, Vaping Vision don't seem to have Caramel any more, not in 18mg, my strength. TW do, but it's only in the very expensive range atm and at 6.99 for 10ml, I'm not going to rush. I found it somewhere else, but then lost the tab when my machine crashed.

Giving up for the night.

Revenger · 07/01/2014 23:17

Thanks everyone.

I don't mind spending a bit extra on something if it will last. I was thinking maybe around £30 if you can get a good kit for that?

I've noticed that the liquids sold on eBay are only the nicotine free ones. Do I have to use a specialist shop for the nicotine liquids? I shall look for an 18mg one, thank you.
