AIBU ... to STILL feel positively evangelical about electronic cigarettes? [thread 2]

magimedi · 15/11/2013 22:02

Here we go with thread two.

There is a great deal of information on Thread One about vaping :

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1865547-to-feel-positively-evangelical-about-electronic-cigarettes?pg=1

I think that many of us have been able to give up smoking thanks to e-cigs & vaping & are all feeling the positive results & want to spread the message.

Ive not tried that brand, i like diamond mist and dekang mainly.

We are thinking of having a go at making our own. Mainly because i think that if the government do start sticking their noses in with regulations etc it will be the pre made liquids they target.

I don't see any other feesible way for them to do it (and even the liquid would be done on flimsy reasoning).

what makes ne think that is because cannabis is illegal - but bongs aren't. Any shop can legally sell bongs and no one can do anything about it.

So it should by rights work the same for vaping devices - the clearos on their own are useless. Like a bong without cannabis.

The batteries i cant see how they could do anything without applying it to every type of battery ever made which would be ridiculous.

So i think the liquid will be targetted if they do anything and it will at the very least be taxed and made as expensive as smoking, or be made illegal to sell which is ridiculous but would just mean people will start modifying ingrediants and that's when you will end up with dangerous stuff on the market.

just hoping they don't end up doing it at all really.

TalkieToaster · 31/12/2013 18:45

Good points there, Zebra. I think you're right. I hope you aren't though!

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 31/12/2013 19:19

Yes I think stocking up on nicotine liquid would be the way to go if the proposed legislation becomes law. Also, learn to make a coil. It's easy and it costs pennies. Talkie if you're doing nic-free you needn't worry too much, if it comes to it you can just buy your glycerine from boots and your flavourings from tesco Wink

I'm looking forward to mixing my own liquids but I need to sort the house so I have space first.

Here is a very good analysis of what the proposals actually mean. Part of the outrage is that they are targeting clearos and other refillable tanks, when you can buy drug taking equipment all over the place. You're right though, Dizzy, an ecig is basically a battery with a bit of wire on top and something for a wick (cotton wool works great) so those 'in the know' will be fine. The people to be concerned about are the millions of current smokers who may not ever get the chance to switch because the knowledge has gone underground - and you'll get people extracting their own nicotine from various plants and from pesticides or importing 100% nicotine liquid and you'll get deaths in all probability.

There's a demo planned for Jan 11 - mini vape meets at BBC studios up and down the country (and other media outlets across Europe). Have a look at the vaping forums if you're interested - UK Vapers, Planet of the Vapes or All About E Cigs. There's probably something you can follow on twitter but I'm a bit clueless about all that.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 31/12/2013 19:23

Dizzy the nasty taste you get off a new atomiser head is because you are vaping machine oil Grin

You can dry burn and then soak your heads in vodka before use to get rid of it or you can just shrug and carry on as it won't be killing you as fast as the fags were.

DizzyZebra · 31/12/2013 19:35

Oh is it? I figured it must be sone sort of coating or something. Ill dry burn i think. The taste does make me gag. Going to have a read of that link.

DizzyZebra · 31/12/2013 19:36

Other half would like to know if any DIYers could point him in the direction of supplies. He is very confused on the nicotine part and what to get.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 31/12/2013 19:46

I think Queen knows a bit about DIY liquids.

DizzyZebra · 31/12/2013 20:15

I shall await her reply! :)

I cant get over how informative this is, this is better than some actual vaping forums lol.

Also very impressed with the iclear 16. It gives a lovely vape i was not expecting it to be this good.

So what makes a dual coil better? Id seen dual coil mentioned before but had no idea about them.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 31/12/2013 20:26

It has two hot bits in it so it burns evaporates twice the amount of liquid Grin (so expect to get through rather a lot more liquid)

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 31/12/2013 20:33

I've been a bit disappointed with the vaping forums. There seems to be a lot of willy-waving and not much advice beyond 'buy this bigger more expensive thing' when what a lot of people need is 'help me make this broken pile of shit work in the next hour, otherwise I'm off down the road to buy fags'. There's a lot of expertise there if you're after some techy advice and know exactly the right question to ask though.

Allergictoironing · 31/12/2013 20:56

Oh goodness Plenty the willy waving is exactly what I was thinking! Plus there seems to be a bit of snobbery from some people regarding what you do/don't use e.g. if you don't have the latest lash-up of kit that you've modified yourself and/or don't blend your own juice, you aren't a "proper vaper" or something.

As far as I'm concerned, whatever gets people off the fags is A Good Thing whether it be the latest & greatest esoteric kit or a bog standard e-cig like you can get in supermarkets or the petrol station.

DizzyZebra · 31/12/2013 21:40

Is the iclear 30 b i have dual too then? I thought that was using more. Definitely gone through more with the iclear 16, but i just thought i was having too much fun using it haha.

DizzyZebra · 31/12/2013 21:44

Allergic - Funnily enough i mentioned the snobbery to OH earlier. I noticed a lot of dislike for cheaper kits, with claims of them putting the high end market at a loss and discouraging improvements.

I thought it was silly. We started out with the cheap ones. I never would have bought any of the bigger branded stuff like innokin if i hadnt tried vaping at all, and i suspect many are the same. People are more willing to gamble a fiver than they are 30+ quid when they dont even know if theyll like it, plus, no matter what price tag your kit, another smoker converted to vaping is another person to defend vaping as a whole.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 31/12/2013 21:46

yes, looks like it - dual bottom coil.

QueenStromba · 31/12/2013 22:14

Hi Dizzy.

I've bought nicotine from Liberty Flights and from Bargain Vapour. I've not actually tried the stuff from BV yet but I assume it's fine and cheaper than anywhere else I've seen it.

VG is just glycerine - easiest and cheapest place to get it is Boots or the like. I've just got a load of PG from ebay - way cheaper than vaping shops.

I get my flavourings direct from flavour art in Italy - takes a bit longer but a lot cheaper. They do really good flavours and have a great range of fruity flavours - my favourites are forest fruit and cookie flavour. They make up the flavours fresh for each order so some of them need to stand for a while, I've found this especially with tropical flavours.
Joose Juice also do flavour concentrates if you've got flavours you like from there.

Fasttech are cheap for bottles.

Allergictoironing · 31/12/2013 22:14

It's the hassle factor with me. Some of the people on the forums seem to spend hours & hours every week fettling their kit & making esoteric juice blends, and spending a small fortune while they are about it. Anyone who doesn't want to faff about like that seems to be looked down on by some of those who do.

I just wanted something that would replace my smoking with a cheaper, cleaner & healthier option, not a whole new major hobby. OK there's the bonus of all the lovely flavours but I can buy those easily enough without turning my kitchen into an alchemists lab Grin.

QueenStromba · 31/12/2013 22:15

Oh, if you want to be precise in your mixing then you'll need syringes and the like. I gave up on that pretty quickly and just started judging by eye.

DizzyZebra · 31/12/2013 22:26

Thanks queen, he is happily browsing away now haha

DizzyZebra · 31/12/2013 22:35

Sorry to be a pain, hes confused again.

Have i got this right.

Id need the unflavoured liquid on that link (either pg or vg based, whats the difference there?)

PG

VG

Flavourings

He says thankyou for directing him, he just wants to make sure im right on that

QueenStromba · 31/12/2013 22:58

What does he normally vape? I vape around 50:50 PG:VG but what he'll need depends on his preference.

DizzyZebra · 31/12/2013 23:15

Im not sure, we mostly use dekang and diamond mist but have never noticed or specified a pg/vg mix

QueenStromba · 31/12/2013 23:34

Ok, dekang is 80:20 so he'll want to get PG based nicotine. So to make up 10ml he'd want:

2ml VG
1ml flavouring
and 7ml of PG based nicotine and PG to make it up to the required nicotine strength.

Cantabile · 01/01/2014 16:12

HNY fellow vapers!

Queen, on the site I looked at (one of the ones linked above) , the nicotine concentrations at their lowest are 27%. I usually vape 1.8mg or 18%, so I would have to calculate various quantities of plain pg/vg and flavouring in order to bring that strength down to 18%, wouldn't I? ATM, it seems more complicated and open to error than it's worth - but of course if the EU do ban things I'll be kicking myself for not ordering tons of everything.

Actually, now that the champagne is wearing off, I can see that it's actually fairly straightforward, as 18 is just 2/3 of 27. Blush

QueenStromba · 01/01/2014 16:25

Happy new year! :)

I vape ~13mg because it's half of 27mg and I wanted 50:50 PG:VG :)
There's all sorts of online calculators where you can put in how many mls you want to make, the strength of your nicotine and what strength you want and it will tell you how much of everything you need to add. If you wanted more than 70:30 PG:VG you'd have to go for a higher concentration nicotine to get it to 18mg.

DizzyZebra · 01/01/2014 18:55

Thankyou very, very much queen :)

Seriously still cant believe how good these little iclear 16s are. When i went in for the itaste kit he said the iclear 16s had been flying off the shelves and i can see why.
