A man just held a door open for me

mrswarbouys · 13/11/2013 17:14

to a department store and I thanked him. A woman behind me gave me a dirty look, tut-tutted, exhaled really loudly and deliberately shut the inner door on my nose - practically. I'm upset. Sorry if this is tired discussion but what did I do that was so wrong?

The woman is a twat.

I always hold doors open. It really shouldn't be a matter of gender that guides whether you have manners or not.

MySiamese · 13/11/2013 17:17

Do you mean literally?

I don't think you did anything wrong.

tethersend · 13/11/2013 17:17

How did she do that from behind?

Did he not hold the door for her too?

From your account, I can't see that you did anything wrong.

NynaevesSister · 13/11/2013 17:18

If she was behind you how did she shut a door on you?

It being a man is irrelevant. It is only good manners to hold the door for someone behind you or about to go through ahead of you regardless of whether you are a man or a woman.

Rosa · 13/11/2013 17:18

100% nothing..... The other woman was rude silly cow . The gentleman was being charming ...
I held a door open for an elderly gentleman the other day .. It works both ways ..

usualsuspect · 13/11/2013 17:19

How did she do that then?

KellyHopter · 13/11/2013 17:19

Righto!

KellyHopter · 13/11/2013 17:20

It's PC gone mad!!!!

ParsleyTheLioness · 13/11/2013 17:21

There are two doors in this story, an inner and outer door.

NewtRipley · 13/11/2013 17:21

I don't believe it.

ShatnersBassoon · 13/11/2013 17:21

Was it a revolving door? I can't work out what happened.

ohfourfoxache · 13/11/2013 17:21

Don't worry about it - she sounds like she might be a few baked beans short of a tin Confused

OrlandoWoolf · 13/11/2013 17:26

Door opening. If door opens towards you, it's nice to open it for anyone. If someone is behind you, try to keep it open. For anyone.

mrswarbouys · 13/11/2013 17:43

Ok. I've just made it up NewtRipley. For those who are interested I was going into Peter Jones where's an outer, street door and an interior door about 4 metres inside from the outer door (on the ground floor anyway.) The man held door open for me, and the crime was committed. I held the door open for the woman behind me, she pushed past me, and showed her displeasure at my behavior. I'm really upset , I feel like I've offended..

Why are you upset?

I think you should let it go.

usualsuspect · 13/11/2013 17:46

You must have trouble getting through life if you are upset by door opening incidents.

Tee2072 · 13/11/2013 17:48

That upset you? Really?

Are you 5?

YouTheCat · 13/11/2013 17:48

Don't be upset for offending a twat.

I bet she's not upset.

WorraLiberty · 13/11/2013 17:51

Sorry if this is tired discussion but what did I do that was so wrong?

Why would it be a 'tired' discussion? Confused

How many people do you know who have had a door shut on their nose by a tutting, loudly exhaling person with a dirty look on their face?

digerd · 13/11/2013 17:54

I have always held doors open if somebody is behind me. Sometimes they do it themselves. I never let go of an open door without looking to see if anyone is behind me. I also love it when a man holds a door open for me - some doors are too heavy for my comfort.
That woman I don't understand at all. Surely an automatic reaction is to thank that person, man or woman.

tethersend · 13/11/2013 17:55

Was this in Cambridge?

Because that might explain it.

Tee2072 · 13/11/2013 17:56

You and me both, Worra

Mylovelyboy · 13/11/2013 17:58

Its a shame more nice folk dont open the doors for people.

VerySmallSqueak · 13/11/2013 17:59

I would have asked her what her problem was.
And thanked the man.

usualsuspect · 13/11/2013 18:00

I find most people hold doors open.
