A man just held a door open for me

to a department store and I thanked him. A woman behind me gave me a dirty look, tut-tutted, exhaled really loudly and deliberately shut the inner door on my nose - practically. I'm upset. Sorry if this is tired discussion but what did I do that was so wrong?

Yes I do too. Don't get how anyone could disapprove of a simple act of courtesy like that. I'm such a coward, I should have confronted her and asked what the problem was..

I hold doors open, men hold doors open for me as do children

I do go off on one if loads of people go through the door I'm holding without any acknowledgement Grin

This used to be my dad's evidence for how the world was ending, it never happened to him or anyone he knew but a newspaper said that a woman had yelled at a man for opening the door for her and therefore all women were yelling at men!!

Bless him, doesn't stop him from opening doors still but my god did we have some arguments

He is quite the gent my dad!!! Pulls out hairs, opens doors, takes his hat off, dresses up for dinner....

Irrespective of their gender if there is someone trailing not far behind me I always hold open the door

mrswarbouys · 14/11/2013 13:31

Your dad sounds lovely Rufus44.. Hope so much that Gentlemen like him are not a dying breed.

You seem determined to use this as evidence of some old code of male to female chivalry.

Times have moved on. Not because men can never hold open a door without being shrieked at for being sexist (never seen this btw, I think it might have happened twice in 1976), but because men and women are generally reasonably polite, which includes holding doors open where possible. This is normal social 21st Century behaviour.

zatyaballerina · 14/11/2013 14:11

I always keep the doors open for someone coming directly behind me, it's basic manners. The woman was obnoxious, the man doing what any normal person would do.

All I can glean from your post is that the you need to grow a thicker skin. And you must have a big nose.

alwaysneedaholiday · 14/11/2013 14:17

Did you giggle/flutter your eyelashes/blush/flick your hair in a flirtatious manner? Wink

Thought not.

You didn't do anything wrong; it is polite for anyone to hold a door open for anyone else, regardless of gender.

RabbitFuckerFromAHat · 14/11/2013 14:19

Gender is not an issue here, unless you're trying to make it one, OP. She was a nobber.

I am UBERFEMINIST and I hold doors for people, and I wouldn't ever complain about anyone holding a door for me, unless they were doing some kind of weirdo making-a-point patronisy bullshit.

mrswarbouys · 14/11/2013 14:29

I believe it has f* all to do with gender, just manners..
