A man just held a door open for me

to a department store and I thanked him. A woman behind me gave me a dirty look, tut-tutted, exhaled really loudly and deliberately shut the inner door on my nose - practically. I'm upset. Sorry if this is tired discussion but what did I do that was so wrong?

If this is a 'have I let the sisterhood down?' sort of a question, the answer is 'No.'

Relax.Move on.

VerySmallSqueak · 13/11/2013 18:03

Or did you accidentally let the outer door close on the other woman after the door was opened for you?

LondonNinja · 13/11/2013 18:04

This all just shows she's a twat and you're nice.

Have a nice Wine and relax.

WorraLiberty · 13/11/2013 18:04

I held the door open for a guy carrying some boxes the other day.

He gave me a beaming smile and I don't know what he said (English not his first language) but I swear to god it sounded like, "Thank you my lovely cunt" [shocked]

I'm quite sure that wasn't what he said, but it certainly sounded like it!

edamsavestheday · 13/11/2013 18:07

Bizarre. Don't let the daft mare upset you!

Tee2072 · 13/11/2013 18:08

Grin Worra

Fantastic!

I'm going to try to drop that one in the next time I hold a door open for anyone.

LondonNinja · 13/11/2013 18:16

Love it, Worra.

NewtRipley · 13/11/2013 18:17

No, I mean I don't believe people can be so grumpy!

NewtRipley · 13/11/2013 18:18

I think this was a tired discussion in 1983

NewtRipley · 13/11/2013 18:23

Sorry. That was rude of me Blush

I just can't see that you did anything wrong but nor can I see why you'd assume this was anything to do with sexism etc. You might have just encountered someone who was in a hurry and was unreasonably grumpy for some reason that was nothing to do with you.

MrsLouisTheroux · 13/11/2013 19:40

She was rude.

AthelstaneTheUnreadyFucker · 13/11/2013 20:10

A young man opened a door for me yesterday; I was very grateful as I was carrying an extremely heavy box at the time. Which of us was wrongest...

Your lady was an arse, regardless of doorholder/doorholdee gender.

limitedperiodonly · 13/11/2013 20:20

I was in Peter Jones today

Joiningthegang · 13/11/2013 20:27

There isn't a Peter jones in cambridge

overmydeadbody · 13/11/2013 20:35

It can't have been in Cambridge because there isn't a Peter Jones there, and the people in Cambridge are all lovely. Fact.

OrlandoWoolf · 13/11/2013 20:37

Where did Cambridge come from?

I thought Peter Jones was off Dragon's Den.

Confused.

gaelicsheep · 13/11/2013 20:37

Only very recently have I finally learned to view other people's rudeness as their problem not mine. And it has been a revelation to me. So many people, like that woman, are really really rude, and I thought it was all about me - seriously.

limitedperiodonly · 13/11/2013 20:42

I know two people in Cambridge who are vile.

If anyone local feels like a little harassment campaign feel free to PM me for their address. Trust me, they deserve it.

Tee2072 · 13/11/2013 20:52

Someone asked if it had happened in Cambridge. That's where Cambridge came from.

The OP said nothing about Cambridge.

OrlandoWoolf · 13/11/2013 20:55

I quite like Cambridge. I worked at one place which is actually quite famous but then left it major career fuckup

tethersend · 13/11/2013 20:57

Oh, right Cambridge is Robert Sayle... Peter Jones is on the Kings Road, isn't it?

In which case, it must've been heaving with cunts. Count yourself lucky you only encountered one.

mrswarbouys · 14/11/2013 08:19

WorraLiberty what I meant by 'tired discussion' is that the more regular than I MNers may have had the 'do you like men opening doors for you?' discussion many times? If so - sorry to drag it up again. ... Also I'm not an infant as someone suggested and neither am I in bits emotionally over it. I just thought it a bit upsetting at the time that she was disapproving of this happening. Perhaps though she was just a stroppy cow having a terrible day and was pissed off with me for not stomping around as quickly as she was..

missinglalaland · 14/11/2013 08:25

The man was polite. The woman was deranged.

I hold doors open for people if they are coming right behind me. I will wait a long time if they are elderly or pushing a pram.

mrswarbouys · 14/11/2013 08:46

Yes me too. Don't get how anyone could have a problem with it. I'm such a coward, i should have confronted her and asked what the problem was.
