Newborn coats- Aibu??

Disclaimer- lighthearted.

I have been sorting through ds2s (1 mo) presents today and he has been given 4, that's 4 coats, in sizes 0-3 and 3-6m. All little puffa jacket things, and a duffel coat.

Now I don't mean to sound ungrateful but it's such a bloody nightmare trying to get little newborn arms through the sleeves, then you have to take the thing off in the car, and in the pushchair you get the newborn temperature paranoia and its much easier to just add/remove blankets rather than faffing with teeny puffa jackets, no?

I don't get it!!

YADNBU I remember how I hated sleeves with my babies.

You buy them, they look adorable for five minutes, but they're bloody impractical and you take it off and stuff them in a snowsuit or a blanket.

YANBU. I returned the ones I got given - three 0-3 months and two 3-6 months. The only one i kept is currently being worn by a soft toy - it was bright orange biker jacket with loads of zips and no stretch - like an action man jacket type of thing

I also got loads of dresses in tiny sizes which got worn once (when we met the person that gave us it).

YABU, you never received a newborn dressing gown . It was ever so cute but ever so pointless.

In fact I would extend it to baby jeans, cords, trousers etc other than soft jersey ones. They always look so stiff and uncomfortable. I hate the idea of waistbands digging into little baby tummies.

Besides which they are a terrible faff at changing time.

Yanbu. DS is nearly 5 months and descends into fits of pure rage when approached with a sleeve, particularly of a coat or snowsuit.

Aw, YABU, DD had an AMAZING purple all-in-one snowsuit that she looked ace in.

But then we never went in a car. That would be a pain in the arse. She was always in the pushchair and blatantly cold, so I never had 'the fear'.

Newborn dresses, however, were ridiculously annoying. Anything that involves tights on a child is annoying.

I second the tights thing. They are baggy till they reach about one anyway.

We got newborn slippers which were the most useless gift ever. They were quite cute though

Things like this get quite quickly taken back to the shop whence they came and swapped for either something else or the same thing in a much bigger size to keep for next year.
Coats for very small babies are pointless. They need all in one snow suits.
Also HATE anything with a hood for a baby that spends all day lying down.

And what's with putting pockets on baby clothes?

I was given a newborn hooded jumper it was apparently made out of cardboard I dont actually think I would have been able to get it onto ds without breaking an arm.

At least a jacket has a zip and obvious access point ;)

I can't understand baby shoes. DS was given some, I tried halfheartedly once to put them on him, he kept snatching his foot away, fanning his toes and curling his foot up. I gave up.

Maybe the people who have bought the coats haven't got children or haven't tried to put a coat on a baby so don't know how tricky they can be.

Dd1 was born in the middle of winter so I ended up with soft snow boots (what newborn needs snow boots ffs) and a matching white furry jacket and hat. Most impractical gift but I did swap them for a gorgeous snow suit and cardigans.

Aw my youngest had a fab bolero type cardi and fantastic car seat footmuff which was just great or was wrapped up in the pram. I really can't remember any of mine having coats when they were babies - like you say pointless!

My baby is 5 days old and I looked for a dressing gown for her when I was in Mothercare. Whats wrong with that? Didn't find one tho...

Agree - although I've ended up with little hooded fleece jackets for DS2 because he spends his outside life in a mei-tai, so I needed something hooded (hats just get pushed off), and couldn't get an all in one with a hood (other than enormous snow suit he'd overheat in when strapped to me) for love nor money - especially since I'm SICK OF POPPERS and wanted one with a zip (actually H&M had the perfect thing, even in a nice blue star pattern, but only from 4 months :( )

I've given in, bought a pattern and am sewing them myself.

I'm pregnant with dc1. I bought a soft little white coat with a hood in size 0-3 months in the sale, my DM laughed at me, and assured me it would be worn once and then abandoned

I personally don't like stiff or uncomfortable looking clothes like jeans on teeny babies though, they just look so uncomfortable.

I think with newborns the simpler the better!

We had one box for vests, one box for sleepy suits and another for blankets/cardis/hats.

DD was an old fashioned looking baby I didn't really put her in "proper" clothes until she was nearly 6 months except for the odd occasion or where we needed to send a picture of her to someone who had sent us an outfit :)

YANBU, both mine were bald babies and looked like Russian POWs in the lovely wool trenchcoat someone bought.

Up to 6 months, all you want is vests, sleepsuits and snowsuits. Job done!

Do they have tags on? Could you take them back and exchange them for something useful? Or ebay them?
