Newborn coats- Aibu??

Disclaimer- lighthearted.

I have been sorting through ds2s (1 mo) presents today and he has been given 4, that's 4 coats, in sizes 0-3 and 3-6m. All little puffa jacket things, and a duffel coat.

Now I don't mean to sound ungrateful but it's such a bloody nightmare trying to get little newborn arms through the sleeves, then you have to take the thing off in the car, and in the pushchair you get the newborn temperature paranoia and its much easier to just add/remove blankets rather than faffing with teeny puffa jackets, no?

DS is 6 weeks and wears coats with no trouble. He's grown out of his newborn snowsuit but is too small for his 0-3.

YANBU I extend that to all baby clothes unless it's a hat, cardie, vest or sleepsuit.

I hate baby grows. I can never get DS' legs back in them so he lives in soft trousers. He has pyjamas at night because it's easier to pull up and down then popper and wriggle!

See I really liked DD's winter coat and found it easier than wrestling her in to an entire snowsuit. I kept her legs warm with a buggy blanket wrap and foot cosy. I found if it was just a blanket she would thrash about and soon have her arms free (and therefore cold).
When we got indoors I could unzip the coat and take off the blankets without waking her (essential).
If you got four you could try one out before returning them all.

YANBU. DS is two days and we've already be inundated in that. I can't do anything with sleeves on newborns, it's so fiddly.

I've been using a 3-6 month duffle coat on DS2 for a couple of weeks now. We're hardly ever in the car and he just wriggles out of a blanket.
I find babygros a faff after a couple of months and switch to soft clothing in the day and pjs at night.

I also have a dressing gown that I bought in a jumble sale when DS1 was a baby. It's now hanging still unused in DS2s room

I must be in the minority here, but I loved dresses and tights on DD from about day 3, and duffle coats. She even had a gorgeous dressing gown from being tiny. Oh and she had jeans too, but they were so soft and were lined with soft cotton and had poppers for easy access to the nappy.
I liked her in baby grows, but I only put them on her in the evening after her bath for her to sleep in.
It is all a matter of taste, as long as baby seems comfy that is all that matters.

I'll tell you what is really pointless, baby hat and scarf sets. I had a gorgeous set given to me for dd2, and when she was about 3 months I went to put it on her. Hat, no problem, very cute. Mittens, never easy, but we got there. Then the scarf...I looked at dd2 in bewilderment. Babies of that age don't have necks! Where was I supposed to put the feckin thing?!

I agree that coats and snowsuits are just a pain in the arse. The best baby thing I had for dd2 was a maxi cosi car seat liner snuggly thing. It was fab because I could just unzip the cover and hang it over the side of the seat if we were in the car or a shop, then when we went outside I would just zip it back up. It kept her super warm and I never needed a coat. Strongly recommend!

When my DS was born some friends bought him a red puffa coat for age 8yrs!. They thought as he would have so many newborn clothes it would be more practical to buy something he could "grow into".

yanbu most baby clothes are impractical and annoying but they are really cute especially a baby dressing gown

Oh I'm with whoever likes tights on babies. Socks just fell off DS. Lovely practical baby knits are great too, but I despise people who give cashmere or similarly silly yarns for newborns.

Coats I've got a 0-3m and a 3-6m snowsuit waiting for DD due Dec (I have big babies so I expect the first to do the trip home from hospital and that's it) and I'm dreading the thought already. She'll either be in the pram, and probably smothered in blankets, or a sling so I don't know when she would wear a coat.

I never understand when babies wear a full coat/ snowsuit.

Surely outside when cold they are in carrycot pram ie with sides/ hood etc.. So a hat, cardigan, babygro and pile of blankets works. In sling large coat/ snowsuit won't fit and warm from you anyway so just same as above and you wrap your cardigan/ coat around them. Or car seat and wee same ie hat etc and blanket over? When do you use a coat/ snowsuit?

After 6+ months I can understand as sitting/ arms out etc

A while ago, another MNer posted about receiving a newborn coat with ruddy great ornamental buttons on the back. For a small personage that spends most of its time, including out, lying down.

I received a tiny baby raincoat and tiny baby swimming costume.
Both very cute but surely useless? I never used them.

Also baby flip flop type things. Horrible.

I've used coats for both of mine we don't have a car so futmuff on the pushchair and then coat on top. But then I also 'dress' my babies against mn rules, though leggings/dungarees/tops/dresses and tights not jeans.

My DD is 7 .5 months and up until about 6 weeks ago lived in babygrows and now wears soft leggings and tops (with bloody tights as she hates socks) still don't own a coat, mainly because they all seen to be god awful puffy things!

We do have a few thick cardis though which i love, i did get an uber cute Gap all in one fleecey thing with a hood for the Connecta when winter hits bargain at £3 on Ebay :o

NomDeClavier please don't use a snowsuit (or a thick coat) in a car seat under any circumstances - put baby in indoor clothing and then use blankets on top of the fastened harness.

YANBU. DH bought DS1 a fishtail parker being the old mod that he is in size 0-3 months. The coat retained it's shape when worn and DS1 looked like he was nailed to the cross! We didn't make the same mistake with DS2
