EDL....

I am a regular who has name changed for this thread.

I would like to have a discussion about EDL. I want to know exactly why people find them so abhorrent and why it is such a taboo subject.

I dislike militant Islam, it is a dangerous movement and it really frightens me. A family friend was killed in 9/11 and it was a horrible horrible tragedy.

I have two mixed race children, my DH is mixed race, I would not say I'm racist or xenophobic.

As far as I can gather EDL oppose militant Islam, and this alone.

Why does this make them racist? Surely militant Islam, although a very small proportion of Islam, should be opposed?

Mohammad Parvaiz,
Manzoor Ahmed.
Mohammed Saleem.
Amran Khan. (Oldham).
Isra Hussein. (Oldham).

FFS AdventureTed Give up. You obviously have a (racist) axe to grind and it's gone far enough. TBH I think we may well be better off ignoring you so that you spill your bile into nothingness.

How have I been callous? I was referring to all manner of links you have instructed the rest of the thread to read and asking that you offer the same courtesy. I wasn't referring to anyone's murder.

But you just carry on twisting people's words. Hmm

The death of Gavin Hopley is truly sad and I hope those responsible are haunted by their actions forever.
But really, you are making out like the racists amongst the white community in Oldham are entirely innocent and hold no responsibility for the awful segregation and volatile situation over the years. Have you forgotten how racist scum vandalised and overturned the graves of Asian CHILDREN?? How the Asian deputy mayor had his house fire bombed while he and his family including his 4 kids were in the house but luckily escaped?

Reading comprehension isn;t your strong point is it? Could you point out to us where Dysfunctional referred to Oldham as being anything like a Utopia?

The EDL make a habit of keeping an eye on discussion threads like this one on social media and deputing people to contribute. I strongly suspect that is what is happening here.

So do I. Given that the most vocal pro-EDL posters are rather new to MN. Hmm

Hi, i'm back having done my housework and fed the cats :-)

Adventure I see you have already been corrected regarding Gavin Hopley's name. That and the links you provide yet again only refer to the small minority of dickheads in the area. These twats are not representative of all asians in glodwick nor does this tragedy reflect what glodwick is really like. This particular incident took place in 2002 one year following the riots when tensions were still high in oldham. Also, it took place at night when fuckwits of all races are out - the article fails to mention whether the attackers were drunk or high at the time of the attack. Unfortunately, there is a big drink and drug problem in oldham and it happens in all communities. For each one of those dickheads there are dozens of decent, law abiding asian/muslim guys living in Glodwick - four of whom happen to my younger siblings. Having helped and watched them grow up i can tell you they are nothing like the guys in your links. My siblings have english friends, they play football together, go to the youth centre, takeaways, park etc and they've never been attacked. I have a large mixed group of friends in oldham, i've always been able to go into pubs and clubs without any hassle - and no, it isn't because some of the doormen are asian and so i get preferential treatment! Quite a few mixed race marriage ceremonies/parties have taken place in oldham and nobody kicked off about that or caused problems.
Ask the "white/english" people who live and work in glodwick if it is a "no-go" area! Just because some ill educated, ignorant wannabe gangsters like to claim it is doesn't mean it definitely is.

At no point have i said that living in oldham/glodwick is utopia! I've lived in quite a few places and nowhere is utopia! What i have said is that the majority of oldhamers get along fine with each other, we did so before the riots and since the riots all communities have worked together and are still working together to eradicate racism, prejudice and violence. The media, as usual, only cares about sensationalism and chooses to focus mainly on the negative. There are lots of community groups that have been working with the youth in oldham (both asian and english) to educate and help integrate people in both communities. For example, not long back one community youth group organised a charity football match with the local imams and priests playing each other, it was fantastic! Everybody had a great day, mingled, laughed, chatted and ate and drank together. There were no problems. It provided people on both sides with the opportunity to ask/chat about any issues and resolve them or at least go away with a better and informed insight. There have been plenty of other initiatives that have taken place at ground level within both communities that helped heal some of those wounds.

You still haven't answered any of the questions i asked you........

Just a small point, but a relevant one to whichever edl apologist it was who stated that anyone who lives down south lives in leafy wonderfulness in a gated community Hmm should maybe look at a map. The EDL started in Luton, which is...... ummm..... down south. I know logic isn't a racists strong suit, but really!

FFS, is AdventureTed still spouting crap! Here are a couple food for thought quotes for you AdventureTed.

"No human race is superior; no religious faith is inferior. All collective judgments are wrong. Only racists make them." Elie Wiesel

“Ignorance and prejudice are the handmaidens of propaganda. Our mission, therefore, is to confront ignorance with knowledge, bigotry with tolerance, and isolation with the outstretched hand of generosity. Racism can, will, and must be defeated.” Kofi Annan

True. I am dubious that the OP was a namechange. Though the lack of any knowledge might suggest a journalist, fishing so they can write a piece about what a bunch of bigots we all are. Hmm

No, she was in support of the BNP (at one point at least). The first time I encountered her was on a thread about the BNP where she was defending them.

Surely MN would know if Op was a fake because of the NC claim? It would be a new account rather than an old account with a noted NC. I do find it unbelievable the mother to mixed race children would post some of the stuff Op posted.

I am also completely Hmm that the other is a geniune MNer.
