EDL....

DandyFloss · 29/09/2013 11:41

I am a regular who has name changed for this thread.

I would like to have a discussion about EDL. I want to know exactly why people find them so abhorrent and why it is such a taboo subject.

I dislike militant Islam, it is a dangerous movement and it really frightens me. A family friend was killed in 9/11 and it was a horrible horrible tragedy.

I have two mixed race children, my DH is mixed race, I would not say I'm racist or xenophobic.

As far as I can gather EDL oppose militant Islam, and this alone.

Why does this make them racist? Surely militant Islam, although a very small proportion of Islam, should be opposed?

OP posts:

Exactly, Onestep. I'd be like me claiming that the creationist that was trying to convert me on my doorstep the other week is completely representative of all Christians.

YouTheCat · 30/09/2013 16:07

It'd - not 'I'd' ... oh deary me.

LittlePeaPod · 30/09/2013 16:13

Oh dear, is adventure still banging on about the evil Muslims Grin

AdventureTed · 30/09/2013 16:14

Onestep - I haven't expressed a view on whether I agree with the EDL or not. I'm not a member and have never participated in any of their forums.

Here is another link about sharia courts in Britain:

I don't have enough time to get drawn into this argument, but just thanks mrs d and the cat for making the right points better than I could. I've never been more frightened than when once stuck in the middle of an edl march listening to them shout their frankly violent racist (and also homophobic) chants. And I live near a town that has a fair few marches but that level of menace, hate and fear was a new one on me.

I'm not saying all muslims are evil - I am saying that some muslim women need protection from sharia councils - and most of you don't seem to give a damn about them.

YouTheCat · 30/09/2013 16:19

Yet another irrelevant link.

Sharia court decisions are not legally binding in this country. It doesn't matter how many times you link it, it will not make it legal.

As I said many pages ago, in order for Sharia law to become the law in this country, it must be passed through parliament and that is not going to happen unless the extremists all stand for government and get elected.

YouTheCat · 30/09/2013 16:21

Ted, through most of this thread, that has not been what you have been saying at all.

The EDL don't much like women and think their place is in the kitchen and producing lots of little racists. An awful lot of them have criminal histories of violence against women.

LittlePeaPod · 30/09/2013 16:23

adventure have you ever marched along side the EDL at one of their rallies?

Dawndonnaagain · 30/09/2013 16:25

erm, despite claiming to be non partisan it is known that the Gatestone Institute is an anti muslim institution. So, not exactly a fair representation Adventure

WahIzzit · 30/09/2013 16:28

Ffs Adventure have you ever used or witnessed an Islamic court? Have you ever even spoken to a poor oppressed Muslim lady who has been unfairly dealt with in these Islamic courts you keep speaking of?

My dfriend - A pakistani lady - used it for her divorce and she couldnt be happier with the way she was treated.

OneStepCloser · 30/09/2013 16:31

Do you think the EDL are interested in these women then Adventure?

I struggling to get your point to be honest, everyone has acknowledged that there are fractions of all extremists that are wrong, why pick on just one? What do you want me personally to do? There are many many organisations in the UK who support these women.

But I will say this, I have many many muslim friends and none of them are aware of this in their communities. (and none of them have bought houses with a bag of cash, they have, like us, gone via the bank).

AdventureTed · 30/09/2013 16:32

Cat - I have said nothing that is not common knowledge, and I have made no discriminatory remarks.

Maybe you are not quite as informed as you think you are.

PrincessFlirtyPants · 30/09/2013 16:34

You think the EDL care about the rights of Muslim women. Look at this photo. This is disgusting behaviour.

LittlePeaPod · 30/09/2013 16:34

AdventureTed have you ever marched alongside the EDL at one of their rallies?

YouTheCat · 30/09/2013 16:37

But what you are saying is utter bilge.

You still haven't acknowledged that Sharia law is not the law in Britain and just keep posting dubious links.

I think the underlying tone of a lot of what you post is verging on racism but you are quite clever in how you word things.

Longdistance · 30/09/2013 16:40

Any chance of keeping the EDL out of my home town.

Bunch of tossers!!

LittlePeaPod · 30/09/2013 16:40

Cat I would really like to know if Ted has marched alongside the EdL at one of their rallies. Has anyone figured that one out yet?

Dawndonnaagain · 30/09/2013 16:41

You have made plenty of discriminatory remarks. Albeit in a somewhat sly manner, but the implication has been fairly clear all the way along. You have made remarks and have still not provided evidence. As I said, your last little bit from the Gatestone Institute is not evidence, either. They are a known anti muslim organisation, despite claiming that they are non partisan.

LittlePeaPod · 30/09/2013 16:52

AdventureTed have you ever marched alongside the EDL at one of their rallies?

AdventureTed · 30/09/2013 16:52

I haven't made discriminatory remarks. I am neither racist nor islamophobic. I have told no lies. I am not a member of the EDL or the BNP and I have never participated in any of their marches etc.

LittlePeaPod · 30/09/2013 16:58

So even though you clearly support their views, have spent a lot of time defending them and even though you told us a lot of the locals in your area marched alongside the EDL at one of their rallies, you have never done so? Hmm

AdventureTed · 30/09/2013 17:02

Pea -I never said I did support their views. I said it is not a good idea to say everyone who has ever attended a BNP rally is a thug - because some people who attend are frightened by what is happening in their areas. They feel their concerns are being ignored by the authorities and so they express themselves via a legal march or rally.

Dawndonnaagain · 30/09/2013 17:04

but what about the many people where I live who want sharia and openly brag that it's just a matter of time before we're paying tax to them?

We have a massive problem in the UK withislamic extremism. You want everyone to stay silent about it. Do you really think this will help muslim/non-muslim relations?

I have also heard about non-muslims being offered bags of cash to leave their homes and being intimidated until they go.

A salesman told me about the bags of money. He also told me where it happened. I suggest you all take a nice little walk around Glodwick in Oldham and see where it gets you. (I'm not from there, thank goodness).

All yours, Ted.
