I am a regular who has name changed for this thread.

I would like to have a discussion about EDL. I want to know exactly why people find them so abhorrent and why it is such a taboo subject.

I dislike militant Islam, it is a dangerous movement and it really frightens me. A family friend was killed in 9/11 and it was a horrible horrible tragedy.

I have two mixed race children, my DH is mixed race, I would not say I'm racist or xenophobic.

As far as I can gather EDL oppose militant Islam, and this alone.

Why does this make them racist? Surely militant Islam, although a very small proportion of Islam, should be opposed?

Squaddies HAVE been banned from pubs Yes, we have, but that was nothing to do with Muslims, that was because of pissed up squaddies starting fights with civvies and pissed up civvies starting fights with squaddies.

As much as I find the EDL disgusting and scary I feel that providing they don't break the law then they are entitled to their views and to say what they like.

Just as militant islamists and any other group are entitled to do the same - because this is a free country still (hopefully!).

That is why we are even able to have this discussion. :)

I am not a EDL supporter but I can well understand why people would support them. There's a good reason they have strong support in places like Burnley while snooty southerners stick their noses up and look down on them for dressing incorrectly and speaking in the wrong accent.

Crescentmoon, it would take a Muslim to go after Muslim gangs, anyone else would be in fear of having their career ruined by being accused of being "RACIST".

Many Southerners are related to Northerners, or actually are Northerners who have moved down South Flaflafla - so that stereotype is literally just that.

Anyway I've had enough Northerners down here make fun of my 'wrong accent' it's a Dorset accent.

I am a northerner and I think they are thick and an embarrassment to be associated with northeners.

Crescent - why did Nazir Afzal wait so many years before tackling muslim child rapists? You must know that it was brushed under the carpet for years, and that Nick Griffin of the BNP was prosecuted for speaking out about it? An awful lot of muslims have known what was going on and kept their gobs shut.

Police who prosecute Muslim criminals or criminals of any other religion, race or ethnicity to their own do so without fear or care of being called 'racist' actually - you will find that the majority of police are actually white.

My relative was raped by a white man as a child - he got away with it as do many men, of all cultures.

Nick Griffin of the BNP is a Holocaust Denier.

Latara - the police have admitted that they failed to tackle muslim child rapists because they feared being called racist.

Anyway - I thought that you EDL supporters are trying to say that the EDL has nothing to do with Nazis like Nick Griffin so why bring him into the discussion if the EDL is supposedly not fascist, hmm??

Latara - whatever he is, he was right about muslim child rapists and he nearly got locked up for speaking out. This is a freedom of speech issue.

AdventureTed I think the police have been scared of being called racist because the Stephen Lawrence case proved that they are in fact 'institutionally racist' - rape is notoriously difficult to prosecute so they had to be very careful. The men have been prosecuted in the end luckily.

They are as bad and racist as Nazis, NF, KKK, BNP etc.

You simply cannot equate these various groups in terms of "badness." Saying that BNP and the Nazis have some sort of common level of evil is simply daft and quite insulting to the memories of those who perished at the hands of the latter.

Your average BNP member's worst crime is normally offending someone's sensibilities, rather than, say, burning alive all the inhabitants (the elderly, women, babies, everyone), locked in a church in Oradour-sur-Glane, or systematically shooting the Jews at Babi Yar.

They are incomparable.

But if you are not a fascist AdventureTed then why do you care or show interest in what Nick Griffin says in the first place?

Latara - I think that is a really bad excuse and an insult to the children and their families. The police had plenty of evidence and ignored it for the sake of political correctness. They have admitted it.

Adventure do you have empirical evidence of police denial. If so, would you post a link, please.
