I am a regular who has name changed for this thread.

I would like to have a discussion about EDL. I want to know exactly why people find them so abhorrent and why it is such a taboo subject.

I dislike militant Islam, it is a dangerous movement and it really frightens me. A family friend was killed in 9/11 and it was a horrible horrible tragedy.

I have two mixed race children, my DH is mixed race, I would not say I'm racist or xenophobic.

As far as I can gather EDL oppose militant Islam, and this alone.

Why does this make them racist? Surely militant Islam, although a very small proportion of Islam, should be opposed?

Oh and they'll pay through the nose for their hovels because the catstate agents will charge £5billion fuzzy mice for a "bijou property in need of a little updating".

The EDL was started, IIRC, by a pair of cousins who had been heavily involved in one of the football hooligan 'firms', got caught and banned (for life one hopes) from going to watch football games. These firms are not known for their inclusive multiculturalism. These 2 delightful gentlemen looked about them and wondered how they could get their violent rocks off now, at about the same time as 6 or 7 Muslim oddbods in Luton decided to hold up some banners remarking on how the British armed forces have a 'thing' about killing Muslim babies. Said oddbods are allowed to say whatever they fancy about the AF, so good for them. The 2 cousins thought that forming a group dedicated to getting rid 'Muslim extremists' from UK soil might be a bit of a wheeze, and got together with several of their well educated chums and formed the EDL, probably in order to coordinate their thuggery.

Sadly, the vast majority of the EDL are too thick to be able to spot a Muslim extremist from a regular Muslim, so they decided that it was easier to just hate all of them instead. They also found it difficult to tell the difference between Muslims of whatever stripe and anyone else with brown skin, so it was easier just to hate everyone with brown skin. For some reason they also can't distinguish people with brown skin who were born here from those who have moved here afterwards, so everyone with brown skin must therefore be an illegal immigrant. There's also the little thing about not liking any immigrants, as they must all be illegal and over here to steal our jobs and our women, so they hate anyone with a non-British accent or name. So far, so not very bright.

One of the cousins is a bit of a lad, he has convictions for assaulting a police officer who stepped in to prevent him assaulting his partner, various racially aggravated offences and ironically one for trying to enter the USA illegally using his mate's passport. He has a history of BNP membership, NF activism and Holocaust denial. The other also has convictions for violent and thuggery. They are both well known in their home town for being big imbibers of Colombian marching powder, which is probably why they come up with such nonsensical, paranoid drivel to wind their followers into a spittle flecked frenzy about. They were in contact with Anders Breivick for a good while before he murdered all those people in Norway. They are in not so loose affiliation with some really nasty groups in the USA.

Sorry for the essay, I could go on and on about how vile the EDL are, and why. The day they become a proscribed group, like their pals at C18 the better.

Ok, not quite made it to the end but couldn't keep quiet any longer. My DH is Muslim and such a good hearted community spirited man. Never in our ten years of marriage has he tried to convert me, although he will gladly answer my questions when I ask. He is pious, yet will sit next to me in church at weddings, Christmas, christenings, or whenever he knows it is important for me. He gets a uniform allowance for his work uniforms every year. In the whole of our marriage he has worn the same, old, items of uniform in his wardrobe and used the allowance to get new shoes, plain shirts and black trousers, which he then gives away to the poor. If the EDL want people like him out of the country, it would be a great great loss. Oh and by the way to whoever it was commenting on Muslim people being dirty, what a huge misconception. Cleanliness is such an important part of Islam.

Dandyfloss - you want to know what makes them RACIST...well, the hatred they feel towards OTHER RACES. Firstly, they hate all "foreigners", who they believe come to britain to deliberately milk the benefit system - apparently "foreigners" do this at the same time as "stealing our jobs" (go figure!). Secondly, they have a particular hatred of muslims and islam itself as a religion. Thirdly, the fact that they attribute ALL social and economic problems/failures to these "foreigners".

The EDL has given itself a bad reputation through not just the blatantly racist and extreme views it holds but also through how its members conduct themselves. They behave in an aggressive, thuggish and intimidating manner. They also cannot converse in an informed and coherent manner. I have come across hundreds of these fuckwits and i have yet to find one who can actually hold a reasoned debate. The reason they can't is generally because they don't understand what they are actually "protesting" against, they are just jumping on the nearest passing bandwagon that is rolling by. Or should i say desperately trying to hold on to the nearest passing bandwagon because they're too drunk to stand up straight or make sense!

Now if ONLY the EDL views were an opinion in the ether.....sadly they are not. They take their views to the street where they are translated into violence and fear. They embarrass and insult a whole nation by ignoring its history and claiming to "speak for the real english/british". Their purpose is to divide and conquer - through fear and violence and misinformation. Their mentality is "Us against Them".

I've trying my best to remain polite but if you can't see them for the repugnant racists that they are AND you're a parent to mixed race children.... quite simply you are not fit to be a parent and i fear for their safety and well being.

DandyFloss do you now feel more educated and informed or are you still innocently bewildered by why so many people are so nasty to the poor EDL members. After all the EDL are really nice, genuine and peace loving people just trying to protect us from those nasty terrorists invading Britain!
