I was reading the AIBU thread about the husband vaping in the house with a newborn. I was struck by the passionate testimonials from former smokers, saying they couldn't have done it without e-cigs. I had tried a puff one of those things that look like a cigarette and was underwhelmed. But I didn't know about the more advanced set ups where you can fill them up with your flavour of choice. Anyway, I was intrigued. I smoked a pack a day for 25 years, and never quit more than a few months at a time, no matter which methods I tried.

nb84 encouraged me to give it a try and told me what to buy to get started.

I ordered a starter kit that night. It arrived the next day and I fell in love. I have three of them, now (one always charging, one near to hand, and one in my purse ready to go) and eight different flavours of the juice.

I don't want to smoke cigarettes any more. I like this better. It tastes really good. It feels good. And it doesn't stink. My hands, clothing, and breath don't reek anymore. I don't have to keep going outside. I don't have to feel like a smelly pariah. My husband can't smell it even when I'm sitting right next to him.

And I don't have to try and not think about the fact that my mother died of cancer after spending her last decade debilitated by emphysema.

And instead of paying £8 a day for fags, I can buy a week's worth of juice for £10. The hardware was less than £20 to get started and will require only £10 a month going forward. Of course, I can spend more. Many people geek out on it as a hobby because the gadgets are fun and constantly improving.

I'm not worried about putting on weight like people usually do when giving up the cancer sticks. In fact, I snack less. I no longer crave sweets. I would normally nibble all day, especially Haribo sweets. I don't want them anymore because I am tasting a bunch of sweet flavours all day long.

I'm so happy that I want to tell everyone - every smoker and everyone who loves a smoker - about it. Grin

BetsyM00 · 05/10/2013 11:32

Thanks to Katy and this thread I am now 3 days, 23 hours and 46 mins without a ciggie! Many, many thanks. Grin

I bought this starter kit. It comes with both clearomisers and cartomisers, but I think I prefer the former as I can see how much liquid is left. Have also stocked up with rebuildable spare clearomisers and more e-liquid from www.thealchemistscupboard.co.uk/ Currently vaping Aunty Flo's Pear Drops, and it's yum.

It's probably been mentioned already, but a list of discount codes for vendors is here.

Although, depsite no longer smoking, I am in a financial deficit having spent so much on vaping gear! But I am probably set up for at least a year now, so I WILL NOT get drawn into talk of variable voltages and pyrex tanks Smile.

Vaping banana split on my eliteSmile niceSmileSmile

KatyTheCleaningLady · 05/10/2013 12:07

I'm fed up with buying clearos that cost a lot. I am going to use cheap CE4 disposable clearomizers. £2 on Ebay, less than a pound from Chinese sites like fasttech . com.

For spares at ridiculous prices, and free shipping, fasttech in China is great. They have an excellent reputation. The only drawback is that things take about 3 weeks to arrive.

2 days, 21 hrs and 55 mins here. I bought the starter kit and 3 liquids and then I bought the 5 pick n mix which arrived yesterday. Last night I was like a kid in a candy store without money. All these different flavoured liquids but only one clearo. Thankfully the postman delivered my extra 5 clearos today so I'm sitting here with four on the go. Bubblegum being my fav so far. Katy, I can't thank you enough for starting this thread.

DollyTwat · 05/10/2013 12:48

I've ordered a kit and some vapours.

I'd been using my e-lite cig for a while, which tasted the best of all the ones I'd tried, then I managed to lose it when out. So went back on the fags - and I smoke more of the real things.

Does anyone have any recommendations for juice that tastes like Malboro?

awaywego1 · 05/10/2013 13:59

I'm just wondering how much liquid people get through on average? I filled mine up to the 1.6ml limit yesterday evening and have used about 1/2 of that now.

Any juice can be used with that and similar kits. I really abandoned tobacco flavours very quickly. I decided that nothing tasted all that nice and I didn't want to replicate tobacco. I've got a few on the go at the moment: banana, vanilla ice cream, bubblegum and fresh mint.

ilovesooty · 05/10/2013 15:01

Not sure how much liquid I use as I use so many at once but I reckon it would take me a long time to get through 10mls - several days at least.

If anyone missed the Paradise Vape starter packs they might be interested in these pretty ones:

it has a lot of stuff to buy but i found the videos very informative

ilovesooty · 05/10/2013 18:04

I've not used it but I have a friend who gets all her supplies from there.

Happydays12345 · 05/10/2013 18:28

I started camping Monday, after buying the kit at my local shop. I love it and haven't had a cigarette since. I've noticed that some of the time now it tastes burnt so I'm guessing I need a new bit where the liquid goes. I've ordered some new ones and am now going to try and refill an old e cig cartridge after watching the video on you tube so thanks for that.

Happydays12345 · 05/10/2013 18:43

I started vaping not camping.

teenagetantrums · 05/10/2013 19:29

well was surprised when mine turned up this morning, i haven't had a fag since it came and was charged(glad i had a teenager to show me how to work everything) but am having a glass of wine and really want a fag now so i will as i have some left, wasn't planing on giving up this weekend anyway, i think this may the thing that makes me finally give up. I do miss holding a fag in my hand though...

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 05/10/2013 21:02

I've had my first night out vaping Grin

It was quite a boozy night and I was surrounded by smokers all evening but I didn't once want a fag. I've come to the conclusion that vaping is simply nicer than smoking, which is why it works so well for getting people off the fags.

I think I overdid it a bit last night though. It was so pleasant vaping away over a few drinks but there's no natural stop point - with a fag it gets to the end and you put it out. All my liquid is 18mg which I have been finding a little strong anyway and when I got up this morning I felt like I'd smoked about 20 extra fags last night except - no tight chest, no gravelly speech, just that jittery background yukky feeling you get when you've smoked too much on a night out Blush I'm going to get some lower strength and zero nicotine liquid for nights out I think.

I managed to ruin 2 out of my 4 clearomisers last night. One I burnt out by turning my VV too high, the other I screwed in too tight and it started leaking. More on order and getting some rebuildable ones. Still researching pyrex tanks.

Meanwhile, DH says he 'can't wait' to switch to vaping Smile

Congrats to everyone who is ditching the fags! This thread is really inspiring Flowers

ginmakesitallok · 05/10/2013 21:08

Re Pyrex tanks, I have a couple of mini pro tanks and live them, no leaking or gurgling and can use them with any juice with no fear of cracking.

ginmakesitallok · 05/10/2013 21:11

Oh, and replacement heads for the mini pro tank are £10 ish for 5. A head lasts me about a week and a half and then I dry burn. Then I use again, dry burn again and if the flavour wick (the extra wick on top of the coiled wick) is looking particularly manky I just get rid of it). You can buy wick and wire to recoil yourself, but I just buy new ones.
