to feel positively evangelical about electronic cigarettes?

I was reading the AIBU thread about the husband vaping in the house with a newborn. I was struck by the passionate testimonials from former smokers, saying they couldn't have done it without e-cigs. I had tried a puff one of those things that look like a cigarette and was underwhelmed. But I didn't know about the more advanced set ups where you can fill them up with your flavour of choice. Anyway, I was intrigued. I smoked a pack a day for 25 years, and never quit more than a few months at a time, no matter which methods I tried.

nb84 encouraged me to give it a try and told me what to buy to get started.

I ordered a starter kit that night. It arrived the next day and I fell in love. I have three of them, now (one always charging, one near to hand, and one in my purse ready to go) and eight different flavours of the juice.

I don't want to smoke cigarettes any more. I like this better. It tastes really good. It feels good. And it doesn't stink. My hands, clothing, and breath don't reek anymore. I don't have to keep going outside. I don't have to feel like a smelly pariah. My husband can't smell it even when I'm sitting right next to him.

And I don't have to try and not think about the fact that my mother died of cancer after spending her last decade debilitated by emphysema.

And instead of paying £8 a day for fags, I can buy a week's worth of juice for £10. The hardware was less than £20 to get started and will require only £10 a month going forward. Of course, I can spend more. Many people geek out on it as a hobby because the gadgets are fun and constantly improving.

I'm not worried about putting on weight like people usually do when giving up the cancer sticks. In fact, I snack less. I no longer crave sweets. I would normally nibble all day, especially Haribo sweets. I don't want them anymore because I am tasting a bunch of sweet flavours all day long.

I'm so happy that I want to tell everyone - every smoker and everyone who loves a smoker - about it. Grin

Can anyone help as one of my ELites doesnt seem to be charging. The red light is on the usb stick but the green tip of the cig is not lit up. When I charge the other cig the green light is on. Thanks x

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 03/10/2013 18:31

I don't know much about ELites but it sounds like it's not connected properly. You could try unscrewing it from the usb charger and cleaning the contact bits. Have you had it a while? I'm not sure how long the batteries live on those.

I still haven't smoked a fag since last night! I've had one roll-up since midday yesterday, when my battery ran out in the evening. If I'd known it would only take 2 hours to recharge, I'd have just waited.

stillenacht · 03/10/2013 18:57

Thanks PlentyofSmile i took it all apart and reconnected it and then green light went onSmile xx

stillenacht · 03/10/2013 18:58

Have only had it since yesterday just scared of battery running out!Smile

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 03/10/2013 19:14

Yay, glad it's working.

I'm vaping rum tonight Grin Not sure about it really, it tastes more like rum flavouring than actual rum, which I suppose is to be expected!

Ive just bought another starter kit to use as a spare, from Paradise Vape. Having switched from e cigs to vaping, I can see vaping will be much cheaper for me...Ive have a 10ml bottle of e juice, still going strong after 3 days. I do prefer e cigs for nights out tho, but I'll be spending much less on cartridges as not for regular daily use any more. I no longer smoke them at home (thank god for this thread, full of useful info!). Bombjack I have vaped in a couple of pubs, staff dont say anything. I dont really do it so openly tho. But if some pubs are allowing then I think I may ask...

stillenacht · 03/10/2013 19:41

Mistress you can put the juice into the e cigs. I have watched the youtube clip of how to do this with my e lites, I ordered banana cream and bubblegum yesterday to try this out when they get hereSmile

MistressDeeCee · 03/10/2013 20:02

stillenacht, can you?! well well..I live and learn. Mine are called Socialites, very similar to e lites. Think I'll search out a YouTube clip then. If I could do that I wouldnt bother with the cartridges at all, £10 for a pack of 5 cartridges..I wouldnt mind if there were 10 in there..

KatyTheCleaningLady · 03/10/2013 20:51

I think the cartridges will eventually burn out.

Mistress, I've just refilled my old sky cig cartridges that I had from my last attempt at quitting. Just don't put too much in at first and give the liquid time to seep down before trying them.

RedRedWyne · 03/10/2013 21:33

I think you can only refill them a few times.

Waffling · 03/10/2013 23:05

Katy Which battery do you use with the Clearos you linked to?

DalekInAFestiveJumper · 03/10/2013 23:22

I don't smoke, but I work with actors. Cigarettes used to be the biggest hassle I had to deal with. I came home every day reeking of second hand smoke, plus I was endlessly dealing with the nightmares that resulted from 'No smoking in costume' policies.

These days, the only thing I have to bother with is making sure there's a few extra power strips available for chargers! No more smoky costumes, no more cranky actors dying for a smoke, no more actors hiding in out of the way places to smoke when I need them for a cue ... Seriously, ecigs have changed my freaking life. I cannot sing their praises loudly enough.

MistressDeeCee · 04/10/2013 01:39

RedRedWyne thanks, Im definetely going to give refilling old cartridges a go.

Doubtfuldaphne · 04/10/2013 07:29

I just got the VIP starter kit and tried my first ecig yesterday. It was so strong I couldn't smoke it properly and PSAT y throat is so sore :( have I got the wrong level of nicotine in there?

I've just discovered the CE4 clearomisers fit on my old fagalike battery! It looks a bit ridiculous but seems to work fine. This is great news as my posh new battery hasn't arrived yet - it means I have a spare! I suppose the test will be whether it leaks or not. I'm not that bothered if it gets ruined. The fagalike I'm using is a Vapourlite. I might get one of the E-Lite ones from down the road and see if it uses the same fitting.

Doubtful, what strength liquid are you using and how many fags do you usually smoke? You could try a lower strength liquid and/or one with more vg and less pg in it - I think vg liquid is supposed to be easier on the throat.

KatyTheCleaningLady · 04/10/2013 11:24

This looks like the exact same thing posted on page 2 of the thread and now sold out from Paradise Vape, only £1 cheaper:

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rechargeable-E-Shisha-Pen-Ego-CE4-Nicotine-Tobacco-Free-Starter-Kit-/151135879546?pt=UK_Collectables_Tobacciana_Smoking_LE&hash=item233066817a

For anyone just curious to try vaping, it's a place to start. Liquids on ebay are non-nicotine, so look on Paradise Vape, Vape Escape, or maybe even your local shop for the juices. (I have seen them in a couple of little convenience-type shops.)

Good find Katy!

So having done a bit of research, it looks like just about any cig-alike will be compatible with a 510 or eGo sucky thing, EXCEPT the e-lites that seem to be monopolising the market in newsagents and supermarkets. What a bunch of shits!

Meanwhile my fancy new battery has arrived Smile The VV thing is good but I haven't tried upping it that much as the instructions say not to go over 4.5V with anything below 3.0 ohms resistance. Does anybody know the resistance of standard CE4's?

I want to upgrade from these CE4 things. I want something that is:

  • transparent
  • pyrex or glass
  • bigger than 1.6 ml
  • easy to replace the innards
  • not expensive - I'll want a few so I can have different flavours going.

Does anybody have any recommendations?

KatyTheCleaningLady · 04/10/2013 13:36

Pubes, you should post at ukvapers.org for clearo suggestions. Pyrex ain't cheap, but you can save the pyrex one for juices that require it.

Reistance varies a lot even within a blister pack of 5 2.4 ohms heads, from what I hear. That said, they seem to be 2.4 as standard, with some replacement heads having a 1.8 option. Some advanced mods have variable wattage, which regulates the voltage and can be used to test the resistance of the heads.

Here is a chart for safe vaping. Since it's hard to know the exact resistance of a given coil, use that for a starting point and experiment. Burnt taste will warn you when you reach the limit.

Ooh it's arrived! And is on charge! Do I have to wait the full 3 hours before I can face it a go?

KatyTheCleaningLady · 04/10/2013 17:21

It might not take 3 hours. It probably had some charge from the factory.

My sis and her DH both smoked a huuuuge amount of cigarettes

Had tried on numerous occasions to quit over the years

Both started 'vaping' on 1st January this year and haven't touched a cigarette since. I'm delighted for them. They also smell a lot nicer Blush
