To think that MIL has just been outrageously rude?

MIL is visiting for a couple of days to meet newborn grandson. (9 days old)

There have been all sorts of issues with MIL who has had lots of personality problems and a chaotic lifestyle. DH has gone no contact with her on and off. She's here on grace tbh

She can be lovely and funny, jokey and warm too. No recent issues but I have just come in from hanging washing out, the neighbours dog was barking...

When I came in she said 'was that you barking in the garden periodfeatures?' and laughed.

I said 'i'm just going to pretend you didnt say that' she said she was only joking....

DH said that she was joking and probably didn't realise what she had said. He did say he'd have a word with her but I said I'd let it go.

I'm Shock

letting it go but honestly can someone really say that as a 'joke'? am I being uppity to feel all tight lipped and offended?

an off joke. poor taste.

sooperdooper · 21/09/2013 12:20

Erm, if someone said that to me I'd assume it was just a joke tbh, I'd probably say 'woof'!

elcranko · 21/09/2013 12:21

Was it a one off or does she has form for comments like that?

PrimalLass · 21/09/2013 12:21

I think you are postnatal. I would have found it mildly amusing, certainly not rude.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHopeful · 21/09/2013 12:22

This is so not worth getting your knickers in a twist over. YABU

WorraLiberty · 21/09/2013 12:22

OMG you took offence to that? Shock

I think it's funny, but I suppose if you've had issues in the past you might read something into it that's not actually there.

OlyRoller · 21/09/2013 12:22

You are being too sensitive.

viperslast · 21/09/2013 12:23

Erm not really a tight lipped and offended tbh. I think even my very straight laced up tight grandmother would know that was a joke.

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 21/09/2013 12:23

I would just laugh and have probably said "Oh I thought it was you"

musicmadness · 21/09/2013 12:23

Surely it was just a joke? I'd have probably said woof then laughed as well.

NotACrazyDanceMom · 21/09/2013 12:24

It was just a joke, Relax :)

Fairy1303 · 21/09/2013 12:24

I think this is a symptom of the fact that you are 9 days post birth. Let it go x

TidyDancer · 21/09/2013 12:25

I don't think it's something I'd take offence to personally.

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 21/09/2013 12:25

You know she's got personality issues. It sounds like a poor joke that someone without brilliant social skills would make.

Thepowerof3 · 21/09/2013 12:25

Everything winds you up when you've just had a baby and you're wiped out, it's not offensive just a lame joke. Put her to good use and make her put the kettle on if she's obviously bored!

QuintessentialShadows · 21/09/2013 12:25

Poor woman, if you took offense to that, I wonder if all her other "personality problems" you have her down with are perhaps as imaginary?

YouTheCat · 21/09/2013 12:26

I'd let it go. Not funny but not terrible either.

It's probably partly nerves on her part as she'll know she has to be on her best behaviour.

Onesleeptillwembley · 21/09/2013 12:26

Your poor MIL. I realise you're post natal but are you always so snippy? It was such a daft thing to say it was obviously a joke. If you're always like this with people I foresee a hard life for you.

PigStack · 21/09/2013 12:26

I would not have imagined that was anything other than a joke. I just cannot imagine taking something like that as an insult unless the person was seriously trying to needle me as a rule...

PeriodFeatures · 21/09/2013 12:29

thanks. yes i am being hormonal! Phew. I love mumsnet.

Quint you have absolutely no idea! She has a history that you cannot imagine....

YAB post-natal. It just sounds like a poor attempt at humour!

PeriodFeatures · 21/09/2013 12:32

I was actually just asking whether i was being unreasonable to react to MIL not for a psychic reading Grin

If she has a history of being a complete nightmare, I can understand why you took it personally. I don't think it was funny, but I think it sounds like it was meant as a joke. Try and ignore her, she obviously has a bit of a rubbish sense of humour.

TarkaTheOtter · 21/09/2013 12:33

I think it depends. If she has called you a bitch in the past then it might have been that she was implying that. If not, I'd guess she was just trying to fill the silence and being socially inept didn't realise the connotations of what she was saying.

claraschu · 21/09/2013 12:34

Why on earth would you be hurt by that?
