To be considering webcam work?

Haven't even name changed...eeeek

I am slowly trying to start my own business. Slowly because I don't have enough money, don't yet have enough equipment and am a lone parent.

I have seriously been considering taking up online webcam work to earn extra money to buy the equipment I need.

I have checked out a few websites, you can block certain countries from seeing you so nobody I know would have to find out! Getting undressed is not necessary and infact banned on some sites outside of 'private shows' and I could do it as and when I want (ie when DS is in bed)

Have I completely lost my mind or does it make sense?

it's sounding like money for old rope:o

The general rule with posting any images online is not to put up anything that you wouldn't mind in the press / on YouTube / emailed to family. The internet is waaay less secure than people tend to think!

If you are confident enough that you will not be recognisable, or that you wouldn't mind your family or DS finding out, and that your own sense of self and sexuality will not be compromised. Most of us can't be that confident, which is why this type of work tends to end up with the desperate and the damaged - and why many of us are so judgmental of men who use such services, but not of the people (women, men or trans) who provide them. However there are clearly other people who are neither of these things and clearly manage to be on webcams without issues (some of the testimonies provided here seem more believable than others).

The money is good, though presumably the hours are hit and miss, so £50k pro rata sounds crazy.

Your call, though I would strongly suggest trying alternative avenues first.

well said Sunny :)

stinkingbishop · 07/11/2013 12:20

My DB has just hooked up with a Romanian webcam girl he met ON THE SITE and is bringing her and her DD over to live with him.

I am sooooooooooo trying not to judge anyone involved. God it's hard!

I guess my view is, if you're sure you won't be wracked with shame/guilt in the future and would be ok if future partners/family found out and saw (because they will, this is the Law of Sod) then go for it. Easy money. If men (like DB) are fool enough to cough up.

Lazysuzanne · 07/11/2013 12:36

As far as I can tell hook up/casual dating sites are often used by webcam girls.
Men tend to find their way to the sites via ads on free porn sites, said ads tell them that there are hoards of local women desperate for no strings sex.

The reality is that the hook up sites have around 10 male members (pun intended because these charming gentlemen are very keen to use a portrait of their personal parts as profile pictures)

...as I was saying, yes about 10 blokes for every woman, the men have to pay a membership fee, the women use the sites for free (or to put it another way the women are used as 'bait' to get the men to cough up the membership money)

Very few of the men actually manage to get any action, they seem not to realise that women are still fussy even if they are looking for something casual.

So I guess it's an ideal place for webcam girls to step in and offer these poor deluded men a bit of relief....for a fee.

I would literally cry if my daughter had posted this. I would hope I'd I brought her up to respect herself enough to earn her money through her knowledge and experience, not her body. I would feel I had very much failed. £25 an hour to lose your self respect? Really??!! I'm sure you worth much more than that. Have you considered other avenues. What skills/experience have you got?

Lazysuzanne · 07/11/2013 13:05

obviously it's not a job for someone who feels the way that you do about it Tee but peoples feelings and attitudes to that sort of thing can and do vary alot.
That doesnt make anyone right or wrong, some of us feel very uncomfortable about things which just dont phase other people.

Whatever happens between consenting adults is, well between consenting adults and no one elses business.

Chattymummyhere · 07/11/2013 13:20

Why not.. If you want to do it your an adult.

I remember watching the tv show about call lines, the women where is shops/painting etc while being paid to talk to a man getting off.

Web cam shows can be what ever you want them to be, if you don't want to show your face don't, I mean I cannot really see a man wanting to get off over your bum caring what color eyes you have

Yes you could end up on youtube or what ever, but I'm sure lots of women who would never work on cam have sent bf/oh/dh rude photos and they could just as easily end up on line or sent into nuts, connected innocently to an icloud account that shares etc

There have been stories before when a husband got sent a boob photo by his wife, his iphone was connected to the works icloud so it automatically uploaded her photo to everyone at his work

kawaii · 07/11/2013 13:21

I did this work. To be honest I did it when I was young and pretty and i didn't make £25 an hour. I worked for about 4 hours and made that.

A lot of it was watching men wanking on their cam, it was pretty gross. You can block your country and you can just cut them off if they get too vile. It was not enough money for me in the end to put up with it. I was desperate at the time though.

Sunflower49 · 07/11/2013 13:22

I have a lot of respect for myself, thank you. And yes, some of us just aren't that precious about showing our bodies for money if men want to pay it.

I don't have casual sex. I don't wear revealing clothes when I go out. I don't understand women who do this-but I don't judge them or feel that they must be wrong , or have something wrong with them,to do it.

Sunflower49 · 07/11/2013 13:23

And well said LSuzanne :)

Sunflower49 · 07/11/2013 13:25

Sorry xpost. Kawaii I make more than that now, but I do have slow nights and it took me a while to build up a customer base and start making good money, I can empathise!
Chattymummy, that is funny. But not a good thing to happen!

Lazysuzanne · 07/11/2013 13:34

Tee, if the problem lies with not using your skills and experience then, by extension someone who (for the sake of argument) qualifies as a barrister then decides to work as a gardener has no self respect?

I find it insulting to suggest that grown women arent capable of weighing things up and making informed choices in line with their own preferences and priorities.

Sunflower49 · 07/11/2013 13:38

Master's degree holder here,ex manager of an office, experience in retail/office work/restaurant work and social care work. Still prefer to work as a webcam girl. It was a definite choice.

openseason · 07/11/2013 13:40

i,m interested to know how you do it and set it up and how does the money come to you to get paidsorry just interested.

kawaii · 07/11/2013 13:45

I can see building up customers was probably the way to go sunflower. I'm actually tempted to do it again. Maybe I will give it a go.

I've just noticed there is always with sex work, i.e. cams, phones or dancing. Of which i've been involved with all at some point, an exaggeration of the money that is usually made.

openseason I worked for an American company and they sent a cheque. It was sent once the money I had earned reached a certain point. Can't quite remember but it was about £70.

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 07/11/2013 13:47

I have and would again. Not abused, secure, happy, married and not neglected.

Just fancied some pin money for shoes and cake without having to cut back it reduce the amount I saved every month. I would earn 2k a month on my proper job. Bank 1k the rest for bills, kids, food etc. The 150 a week I made in a few hours camming was my blowing money. Win win!

Now after ds 2 I'm too shattered!

kawaii · 07/11/2013 13:50

How many hours a week would you work ILetHimKeep20Quid to earn that?

I used to do 3 nights a week, earning most in the early hours.

Sunflower49 · 07/11/2013 13:51

I can't find a pattern really. It depends when you work.Saturday daytimes or early hours 3am to 9 am has worked well for me, dinnertime too (5-6pm)is often quite busy.Openseason I have messaged you.

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 07/11/2013 13:56

Usually an hour during the day when I was off work (only work 2.5 days) and the occasional Saturday night. I never went hell for leather at it, about 5 hours a week

Lazysuzanne · 07/11/2013 13:57

ILetHimKeep20Quid it sounds good, but I'm thinking that in cases like yours the webcam money on top of a regular job would have put you into the higher rate tax bracket thus reducing the 'pin money' somewhat :(

(or did I get my sums wrong Confused)

Mintyy · 07/11/2013 14:00

I have to say that the casual way you are all discussing prostituting yourselves is kind of horrifying.

I sincerely hope with all my heart that my dc never get to a point in their lives where they think it's fine to do this sort of "work". Its creepy.

kawaii · 07/11/2013 14:01

Thanks, I am going to set my account up again... Will see how it goes.

I have a baby this time around so will only manage nights but will see how it goes. I think last time i made £60pw but that was working 12 hours so not as good as you lot!

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 07/11/2013 14:04

Nope. my proper job top line was around 28k

The full year tax return was 7.5k for the cam work minus a few hundred for equipment ,use of house etc.

So I paid tax on those earnings but wasn't in the higher band.

WorraLiberty · 07/11/2013 14:05

If this is what you want to do OP, that's your decision.

But I think you are being naive if you think it's not about nudity.

The no nudity 'clause' is normally what draws 'models' into that business...until they realise that removing their clothes is the only way they can earn money from it.

Good luck in whatever you decide, but make sure your eyes are firmly open before you sign up.
