To be considering webcam work?

Haven't even name changed...eeeek

I am slowly trying to start my own business. Slowly because I don't have enough money, don't yet have enough equipment and am a lone parent.

I have seriously been considering taking up online webcam work to earn extra money to buy the equipment I need.

I have checked out a few websites, you can block certain countries from seeing you so nobody I know would have to find out! Getting undressed is not necessary and infact banned on some sites outside of 'private shows' and I could do it as and when I want (ie when DS is in bed)

Have I completely lost my mind or does it make sense?

That was through adult work needs you set your own rates. Its easier when you build up regulars. I first done it through a company who also done chat lines but they paid 50p a minute and the punters were usually pissed, rude and ready to cum .

The 'happy hooker' is a myth.

Well obviously apart from AiCms sister - which if it's remotely true she's so far in the minority that it's irrelevant.

Ha! Thanks to a poster in another forum, I can identify this argument as an example of the "no true Scotsman" fallacy. (Well, on second throughts, maybe not exactly, but it's close.)

The vast majority of women offering sexual services are previous abuse victims, current abuse victims or too poor to have any real choices.

This statement is worthless, as the use of "or" in combination with a reason that applies to most people means it is trivially true. The vast majority of people doing any (shit) job are doing so because they don't have a better choice.

£3 per minute for foot fetish vids with absolutely NO nudity (apart from naked feet). I did a few when I was skint and have no regrets.

I just always wonder how you come to the conclusion this would be a good way to earn extra money. Surely most people think about becoming an Avon lady first?

Report
KellyElly · 07/11/2013 14:41

Owllady Because you earn more than an Avon Lady. You can do it from your own home without having to worry about childcare. Because the money is immediate. Because people are desperate for money. Many reasons.

Avon probably pays about fifty pence per hour alltold

Avon is grim. I done it once when I was desperate and have actually never felt more like a pauper or beggar in my life.

I can genuinely say knocking on doors asking for books back, having them thrown at me or being told to take through the recycling bin for it, asking friends and family of they wanted to buy something purely so I could get 20% commission on a £3 lipgloss was by far the most degrading thing I've ever done .

Lazysuzanne · 07/11/2013 15:42

Years and years ago I did betterware, not for long I hasten to add, it was probably worse than Avon
Utterly utterly demoralizing

It felt like glorified begging. At least I'm peddling something I believe in on the cam. Myself!

My husband would kill me if I decided to do cam work Blush maybe I could talk him into doing it instead Wink

I'm sorry to intrude, but...is £25 an hour really considered high paid? For stripping off on camera?

Report
Sunflower49 · 07/11/2013 16:27

You don't get £25 an hour.
On the sites I work, you charge a price of your choice, per minute.
WHat you earn per hour/per night-just depends on how many customers you get.

Some nights I've earned £300.Some I've earned nothing.

Really don't see an issue with it. Your time, doesn't have to be forever. Must be worse jobs

Yuck.

Where's the self respect all of you who do this work? What about the fact that these men may have wives/partners who are effectively being deceived by them watching you 'perform'?

It's about a moral compass really, isn't it?

Report
Sunflower49 · 07/11/2013 16:46

In those cases I would blame the man more than the camgirl.

Report
KareninsGirl · 07/11/2013 16:50

Of course sunflower, it is the man's fault. But you'd have to be pretty naive to do that kind of work and ignore the fact that this is the case.

As I said, moral compass...

Report
Sunflower49 · 07/11/2013 16:54

I know it happens. What would happen if camgirls didn't exist though?
Because it is also naive to assume that if camgirls didn't provide that outlet, their moral compass would be raised (i.e they would just go 'ah well, I respect my wife enough to not do anything now)...

Report
KareninsGirl · 07/11/2013 16:58

Sunflower, the point here is that those who do this work are part of it and saying 'what if cam girls didn't exist' is a non-argument because its about your moral compass too and if you didn't do the work you would not be part of their deception.

Report
Sunflower49 · 07/11/2013 17:16

Okay, so is your issue with the moral compass of the girl for taking her clothes off, or with the fact that she may be part of an industry that allows married men to see other women naked?
I see that as two separate issues.

You still sound as though you're making the cam girls, responsible for the actions of married men Confused

Unless they have a banner on the screen saying "Married men only", I don't see your point at all.

Report
KareninsGirl · 07/11/2013 17:24

It's both, sunflower.

Pleasuring oneself on cam for a stranger is really about self respect, but it is a moral issue too as without that, men would not be deceiving their wives/partners this way. And cam girls are part of the deception whether they care to shift the blame to the men or not.

Report
KareninsGirl · 07/11/2013 17:26

*worra, I think the men and the cam girls are to blame. Cam girls know their clients will include a reasonable number of attached Jen deceiving their wives/partners.

Just bear in mind that nothing ever really disappears from the internet, and nothing on the internet is ever private. You see it as a temporary thing no one on your real life will know about, but that simply cannot be guaranteed. How would you feel if everyone in your life found out about it? If it came out 10 years from now because you've gained prominence in some other way? You need to answer those questions before you make your decision.
