NEXT Catalogues -ARGH!!

AmayaBuzzbee · 22/07/2013 08:53

I like some things from Next, especially their children's clothes. I have even ordered some furniture from them. I tend to order online as there is no shop in the town I live, and as I am currently on maternity leave, it is easy to receive packages at home. All nice and good -except:

They keep sending me the massive hardback catalogues I do not want! I have called them at least twice to tell them so. Last time I called they told me if I don't want to receive them, I will have to call a number in an email they send upfront to cancel it. I hate this. I have to spend time and effort in calling some stupid number to cancel a catalogue I did not want in the first place -where is the sense in that? The biggest problem with the catalogues is, that they then send a bill for £3.95 for it afterwards, the other issue is that my recycling bin is already full as it is, I have no space for these books!

This morning I found their Autumn/Winter catalogue dumped in front of my door. I have received no upfront notification that would have allowed me to cancel it, and no doubt the £3.95 charge will appear on my online account soon. I have sent them a complaint -again. This infuriates me so much! Does anybody else have an issue with this?

Just tell them you didn't receive it! Grin

HalfBakedAlaska · 22/07/2013 08:56

I have a massive issue with it, and it's one of those things that gets my dh incensed, too. Think it is disgraceful to have to pay for a catalogue - what shop charges you for going in to have a look?! Keep cancelling it, but last time I was v busy so have just had the bloody enormous tome dumped on our doorstep. Another four quid down the drain, then.

YADNBU.

TabithaStephens · 22/07/2013 08:56

Our local Next has just closed. Good riddance, I say.

southeastastra · 22/07/2013 08:57

take it back to a shop? are you sure they charged you for it? i got one earlier this year, no charge on my account for it

londonrach · 22/07/2013 09:00

I have never understood why next charges their customers for their advertising material. Can you send the books back, free postage, seems silly to be charged for something you don't want. Good luck x

CajaDeLaMemoria · 22/07/2013 09:02

Call the number. It's irritating, but it will stop them. Even going through the complaints procedure doesn't stop them - they just conclude that if you want to cancel the catalogue, you can call xxxx and it'll be cancelled for you.

They seem to randomly leave catalogues down our street. God knows who is paying for them!

MalcolmTuckersMum · 22/07/2013 09:03

They can only take the money if you have a Direct Debit set up surely. So cancel it. That should do it!

goldenlula · 22/07/2013 09:04

southeastastra from my experience of Next, thy add the price of th catalogue as soon as you order from it. Infact, I didn't order for a while and when I did I was charged for the 2 catalogues I had received in that time. I cancelled the delivery of the catalogues and just use the website.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 22/07/2013 09:07

You have to keep calling them. I cancelled mine after 2-3 very very stern calls with them. I think I keep checking online that my subscription's been cancelled. I found their practice very distasteful and have not ordered from them online since my first debacle.

malcolmtuckersmum I don't remember if it's a direct debit they set up, or charging through the long number of the credit card. Most likely it's the latter because I always use my credit card. It's much harder to cancel a continuous payment authority.

ilovepowerhoop · 22/07/2013 09:07

I have managed to successfully cancel my directory but need to phone about my mum's as although I tried to cancel hers it still arrived!

from Next:
If you wish to cancel all future copies of the Next Directory including the complimentary Summer and Christmas books, please contact our free book cancellation line on 0800 10 789 78 at any time.

You will need to have your self serve pin number available and this can be found on your monthly paper statement, the reverse of your Directory Card or at the top of a despatch note.

Alternatively, if you do not have your self serve pin number available or you wish to cancel the chargeable publications only, please call us on 0844 844 8000*. Lines are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

*Calls cost 5p per minute from a BT landline. Mobile providers and other networks may vary.

ilovepowerhoop · 22/07/2013 09:09

it is not a direct debit, they add it to your Next account and then send an invoice for the amount owed

OneLittleToddleTerror · 22/07/2013 09:10

And I got sent a catalogue even though I just order from the website. Those cheeky bastards. It said on my account I've agreed to a recurring catalogue. Took me a few phone calls for them to cancel the catalogue and the payments. They did refund me the original catalogue too. But it's still very very bad behaviour for a supposedly reputable company. It's what I expect from dodgy companies.

AmayaBuzzbee · 22/07/2013 09:19

I am glad I am not the only one who gets angry about this!

I have already called them twice in the past couple of years to cancel all catalogues including future ones, and have just now sent an email complaint as clearly the calling has not helped. I am NOT paying for this one. In the past I have (through gritted teeth) as it shows on my online account, and I wanted to still order stuff from them. If this doesn't stop here, I'll never buy anything from them again -online or shop, I am so pissed off.

I might call them again too, but that pisses me off too, as I just don't have time for this, and it costs money (especially as we don't use landline, only mobile phones).

And btw, I have only ever ordered anything online -never from an actual catalogue, which makes this even more infuriating!

ilovepowerhoop · 22/07/2013 09:23

I didnt even used to open the catalogue never mind order from it. My mum's one is still sitting in her doorstep. It is a pain.

NatashaGurdin · 22/07/2013 09:37

This is really annoying and I think NEXT are one of the worst offenders but I just wanted to add that it is easier now to cancel a continuous authority if you need to as you just contact your card issuer, you do not need to ask the vendor although it is probably a good idea to let them know you are doing this. I have done this myself but the CAB website also has info on this subject:

www.adviceguide.org.uk/england/debt_e/debt_banking_e/stopping_debit_and_credit_card_payments.htm

littlewhitebag · 22/07/2013 09:42

I order stuff from Next from time to time and have never received a catalogue. I have no idea why!

LIG1979 · 22/07/2013 09:42

They will refund the cost of the catalogue if you complain when they send it to you. Just ask them to remove the charge from your account.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 22/07/2013 09:45

amaya this is what MSE says about countinuous payment authority

www.moneysavingexpert.com/banking/recurring-payments

And yes, I did have to keep ringing that number posted by ilovepowerhoop until it says on my online account that I'm no longer subscribing to the catalogue. I think you are a saint to still order from them! I was pissed off enough by the first catalogue.

Like you say, why would anyone read that catalogue? It's all online. It especially doesn't make sense for those of us who ordered online right from the start!

AmayaBuzzbee · 22/07/2013 09:48

They claim to reply to emails within 3-4 days or sooner. I'll see what they have to say for themselves before doing anything else. Thank you all for your suggestions!

OP posts:
ilovepowerhoop · 22/07/2013 09:50

its not a continuous payment authority though as the payment isnt being claimed through a credit card but is being applied to the Next account and then they are asking for a payment to be made by whatever method e.g. online, credit card, in a bank, etc

AmayaBuzzbee · 22/07/2013 09:55

OneLittle -hardly a saint!

I have just been far too busy to remember the issue (had two young DC and got married all in a short space of time) until the catalogue appears again. Last time I found it easier to pay the £4 than follow up with complaints etc as I just didn't have time/energy with newborn etc, but this time I definitely won't give up!

flipflopper · 22/07/2013 09:58

Bloody hell- while I have been reading this thread a bloody next catalogue was delivered!!

I have sent a grumpy ranting email.
I have previously emailed and phoned to cancel them.

RobotBananas · 22/07/2013 10:02

There is at least one thread a year about this, you'd think Next would learn!

There is a way of opting out on the website, will try and find the link. I did this a couple I'd years ago and it worked.

RobotBananas · 22/07/2013 10:06

Argh, I can't find it. Just this
help.next.co.uk/Section.aspx?ItemId=17636
which is presumably the number you've been calling anyway?

AmayaBuzzbee · 22/07/2013 10:12

Robot, yes -calling those numbers have only helped for a short period of time, then the catalogues have started coming ags
