To be really annoyed at Jilly Cooper

Re-reading my jilly's from teenage years. I am not entirely enjoying Ridesrs. how had I missed:

1. Tory - totally written off as 'heft' as she is, god forbid 11 stone. She only becomes of value once she's lost loads of weight and poisoned herself because she's heartbroken.
2. Helen. Oh god, Helen I hate you. You give up ALL of your values to get with rupes, then holy mother of schizzle you put up with infidelity and him hating your child, BLAMING YOURSELF, and carrying on the norm for years.
3. Billy. You're a totally twat for going back to janey.

The women are treated SO badlyy

Yeah I'm not sure Jilly's characters fly with our feminist values now a days.

What about the character who personifies evil? The feminist guardian reader with hairy legs!

Started reading her last one, about the racehorse, but the lead female character was so irritatingly feeble and surrendered (forced to give up her job for an evil but rich older husband) I gave up.

Jilly is not a friend to feminism. The propagandising in favour of the upper classes is also somewhat tiresome. I used to love her but I am kind of over her now. Too old (me, not her).

I absolutely detested Helen when I read it again the other week, she doesn't have a single redeeming quality.

Though the description of her going on that date with Jake in a silver jumpsuit never fails to cheer me up

Jerseyspud: you'd have to fall deeply in love with him first but then he would leave the country. You'd be miserable and live on only vodka and so become waif like and gorgeous. Then he'd come back and you'd get your hair streaked and he'd realise that you were meant to be together. Then you could have him.

Oh I felt sorry for Helen.

Mind I I laugh when she describes people as having triangular tits, so I am easily amused.

I never understood the Rupert thing. When you read about the first time he took Helen out to lunch you just wonder why she didn't run out of the restaurant screaming.

You have to really suspend all rational thought when reading those books.

YANBU. I found her cartoon U and non U tales mildly amusing until the Eton boys took over Westminster. Now? The humour is lost on me, for some reason.

I don't get the Rupert thing either. I don't find thick men at all alluring. So the JC oeuvre is a bit thin on sexual thrills for me.
