To be really annoyed at Jilly Cooper

Re-reading my jilly's from teenage years. I am not entirely enjoying Ridesrs. how had I missed:

  1. Tory - totally written off as 'heft' as she is, god forbid 11 stone. She only becomes of value once she's lost loads of weight and poisoned herself because she's heartbroken.
  2. Helen. Oh god, Helen I hate you. You give up ALL of your values to get with rupes, then holy mother of schizzle you put up with infidelity and him hating your child, BLAMING YOURSELF, and carrying on the norm for years.
  3. Billy. You're a totally twat for going back to janey.

I think my favourite character in the whole series was Dora Belvedon and her dog Cadbury

Thurlow · 24/05/2013 21:47

And Dino, Dino

GetOrfMoiLand · 24/05/2013 21:48

There is not one well adjusted blonde woman in the whole of Jilly Cooper.

am I wrong?

JerseySpud · 24/05/2013 21:48

Oh god Dino. Yes well....another 'i dyed my hair grey as you fancy older men'. Seriously? Most men were wanting 'just for men' then!

MissAnnersley · 24/05/2013 21:49

Chessie was a bit much but I loved her clothes and the fact she was minxy.

Thurlow · 24/05/2013 21:50

Wasn't Chessie in to spanking?

The Carlise twins did sound like fun. But it was a bit weird that they fancied Daisy.

GetOrfMoiLand · 24/05/2013 21:52

Daisy was younger than me at the start (she was early 30s wasn't she)

MissAnnersley · 24/05/2013 21:52

Yes apparently Chessie enjoyed having her 'butt paddled'. Yikes.

Potteresque97 · 24/05/2013 21:52

her 80s books just made life sound like fun. I think modern writers of escapist lit don't really do such a good job of that aspect. completely ott!

thezebrawearspurple · 24/05/2013 21:56

Well 11 stone is large, years ago it would have been considered enormous because there were fewer fat people then.

Alconleigh · 24/05/2013 22:00

One of my happiest pub moments was going into my local and finding Polo on sale for 50p on their secondhand book shelf. I read all the filthiest bits while drinking ferocious cloudy cider and getting cats bum mouths from my companions. I think Jilly would have approved.

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 24/05/2013 22:15

That sounds like a wonderful way to spend an evening Alconleigh!

Alconleigh · 24/05/2013 22:21

it was fab. I miss that pub! As someone said on another Jilly thread the other day though, I read Rivals before Riders, and was really shocked at the nastiness and frankly rapey stuff going on in the latter. Especially looking back; I was a teen when I read them and with 20 years' more life lived a lot of it is quite uncomfortable.
I would still do most of em, mind. classy feminist here

Chessie was in Polo. She was married to Ricky at the start and then buggered off with Bart Alderton and broke Ricky's heart.

No it was his little boy. He was sent to prison and when he was released Rupert turned up in a car for him.

TSSDNCOP · 24/05/2013 22:45

I'm re-reading TMWMHJ after an earlier thread this week. She's just introduced the vicar. Description:

"...breath that could crack a safe at 50 yards..."

rabbitlady · 24/05/2013 23:04

how could anyone not be annoyed by jilly cooper?
and how could anyone ever read such drivel?

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 24/05/2013 23:09

I've read polo at least 3 times but I never remember what happens. I think all the hoping around between countries confuses me. Or maybe it's the trying to get my head round the rules of polo.

I might have to see if they have TMWMHJ in the library now, only read all the later ones once each...

TSSDNCOP · 24/05/2013 23:11

Thumbs kindle edition £2.99!

Pixel · 24/05/2013 23:30

I have read some of them but they all sort of blend in together. The same plot lines seem to repeat a lot! I don't know how you remember all the ins and outs, the character lists are longer than most novels Confused.

JerseySpud · 25/05/2013 08:01

I need TMWMHJ, Score, Pandora, Wicked and Jump on my kindle. I have the rest.

These books are my 'smut' as my DH calls them. They are my chick lit escapism.

fromparistoberlin · 25/05/2013 08:06

the worse is that one about the school (cant remember name)

UGGGHHHHHHHHH full of racist and class stereotypes, made me really angry

but I did love riders!!!!! and I kind of liked Janey too!
