The Spanish hospitals don't want my blood Sad don't know what'd happen to a Spaniard if s/he was hit by a bus in London!

Shall I put my tits away now?

YoniRaver · 16/04/2013 23:10

InTheFrame Its due to the risk of CJD

waterlego6064 · 16/04/2013 23:29

grumpyinthemorning Smoking doesn't stop you being able to donate. I'm a smoker and a donor. I can always identify fellow smokers on the beds as our blood is quite a lot darker in colour than the non-smokers' blood. Sad My next session is booked for June and I plan to have stopped smoking by then so that I can look forward to seeing bright red blood going into the bag!

ZebraOwl · 17/04/2013 00:34

Am not able to give blood but am VERY grateful to everyone who does as have had a few transfusions in the past & will need more in the future. Being Broken also means I can't donate bone marrow Sad

Flowers to all the donors: no need to add to that generosity by flashing, though Wink

GibberTheMonkey · 17/04/2013 00:36

Not sure if that would tempt my dh

I'm booked in again for their next session in may.
I would happily donate more often but that's how often they come to town

piprabbit · 17/04/2013 00:44

BiscuitBiscuit

If only mine were as small and pert Sad.

Due to some very wonderful people giving blood, I was able to have blood transfusions which saved my life when I was suffering from septicaemia.
Of course, this means that I can no longer return the favour. But I think of those strangers often and quietly thank them.

I can't be a bone marrow donor as I have Lupus.

In fact I don't think anyone really wants any bits of me.

But please, do see if you are lucky enough to be able to donate, you will be forever thanked by someone who needed you even though they don't know you.

piprabbit · 17/04/2013 00:48

I think the reason that recipients of blood transfusions can't donate blood, is because we are at increased risk of having caught something nasty from the donated blood we received. Something undetectable, which might not be apparent until much later on in life - like vCJD.

TentativeWhistleBlower · 17/04/2013 02:02

I was told at my place (in Scotland, not sure if it makes a difference) that I had to wait a year after getting my tattoos, unless its changed in the year that I've not been to a shorter time?

PurplePidjin · 17/04/2013 02:39

Ds will be 5 months on Friday, my appointment will be booked asap after mid May :)

Bertrude · 17/04/2013 07:19

I would if I could (donate, that is), but also in a country where my blood isn't good enough. Although apparently only in the city where I am. The city down the road lets Brits donate. Weird

Tits are freed at any opportunity.

FryOneFatManic · 17/04/2013 09:07

tentativeWhistleblower I'm in England, so it may be different, but here is the page from the NHS blood donorsService

RatherBeOnThePiste · 17/04/2013 09:13

My daughter is keen, but I think you have to be 17, is that still right?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 17/04/2013 09:13

FGS Pidj - 5 months??!!

TheCatIsUpTheDuff · 17/04/2013 09:19

They don't want my blood cos I'm pregnant, but my tits are quite impressive at the moment!

ThedementedPenguin · 17/04/2013 09:37

I think it depends where you are

I'm from N.I, I'm not allowed to give blood until my ds is one.

It's also the same for tattoos and piercings. You have to wait a year.

PurplePidjin · 17/04/2013 12:29

I know, Pistey, 'tis madness!

ouryve · 17/04/2013 12:35

I can't give blood because I have no decent veins (it's a heck of a palaver even getting a sample out of me) and because I've had almost a body full in total worth of transfusions after giving birth to each of the boys, for which I'm immensely grateful.

DH has been working on giving it back, but there's not been any sessions anywhere near where he works, for a long time.

Trazzletoes · 17/04/2013 13:11

A big huge super-massive hug to you all for keeping my lovely gorgeous beautiful Joseph alive.

Saying thank you isn't enough, I know, but thank you.

McKayz · 17/04/2013 13:27

I'm making an appointment for next week if I can.

FryOneFatManic · 17/04/2013 14:39

My next appt is in June. We have nurses who go round asking people if they want to make the next appt while they have their tea & biccies.

I have noticed on the website that they are particularly asking for O Neg and B neg donors now as stocks are low. As I'm O Neg, I can guarantee a phone call every time asking if I want to make an appt if I haven't got one booked.

We also need to convert the youngsters. It seems that numbers of young people making donations is dropping, which needs to change if we want to keep stocks up.

MoominsYonisAreScary · 17/04/2013 14:46

Thankyou from me also, I had abloom transfusion after giving birth to ds1 when I was 16, so I've never been able to give blood.

MoominsYonisAreScary · 17/04/2013 14:47

A blood obviously not a bloom!

mrsjay · 18/04/2013 09:17

I was told at my place (in Scotland, not sure if it makes a difference) that I had to wait a year after getting my tattoos, unless its changed in the year that I've not been to a shorter time?

I think that is right dd was put of getting a tattoo because they said that to her I think she was scared she would be poisoned by the tatt or 'something' so she never got 1. DH got a pin badge recently I am assuming it is because he has been donating for so long

JollyPurpleGiant · 18/04/2013 09:19

I can't give blood at the mo due to pregnancy. I would go and flash my tits instead, but I think that might reduce rather than increase the number of potential donors. My boobs are not a pretty sight when freed from the confines of a bra!
