To be shocked and appalled by this book

I realise this has probably been raised before but I have only just become aware of this parenting book vile piece of shite, currently available for sale on amazon. The book advocates whipping babies as young as 4 months to "train" them to obey:

"At four months she was too unknowing to be punished for disobedience. But for her own good, we attempted to train her not to climb the stairs by coordinating the voice command of "No" with little spats on the bare legs. The switch was a twelve-inch long, one-eighth-inch diameter sprig from a willow tree."

Many more sickening quotes on this anti site Why Not To Train A Child

There's a petition to stop Amazon from selling it here: amazon refuse to carry books which advocate the physical abuse of children

Great blog piece here: amazon we find child abuse offensive

I've not seen it before. I think that anyone who publishes a book in which they admit using a switch on the bare legs of a 4 month old should be in jail for a very, very long time.

IneedAgoldenNickname · 17/03/2013 16:19

Sounds like a horrendous book which should not be on sale :(, but surely 4 month old babies don't try and climb the stairs?

where is it on Amazon?

gordyslovesheep · 17/03/2013 16:21

oh and really 'mental patient' people with mental health problems can and do parent brilliantly - how ignorant is that comment

FripperiesAndBollocks · 17/03/2013 16:26

Here, Gordy

FripperiesAndBollocks · 17/03/2013 16:26

I agree about the mental comment, zwischenzug, that was horrible.

HollyBerryBush · 17/03/2013 16:26

I did wonder if it was a Victorian reprint - but I see (thanks google) it is written by one of those hell fire southern fundamentalist evangalists in memphis.

It's not going to take off is it?

becsparkel · 17/03/2013 16:27

It's here gordy Amazon

It's bloody horrendous and has been linked to 3 child deaths in the US.

zwischenzug - Really? Hmm

IneedAgoldenNickname · 17/03/2013 16:28

Gosh, I just read some if the quotes, they recommend using a tree branch to hit a child! Surely it's not real :(

AmandinePoulain · 17/03/2013 16:29

I've signed. Do Amazon not check what they are selling at all?! Shock

The thought of anyone using a stick to stop my 7mo doing something makes me feel physically sick. And read the 5 star reviews at the bottom ShockAngry

TeWiSavesTheDay · 17/03/2013 16:29

I had heard of this book, but I thought it was a pamphlet type thing, not available on amazon!

That's awful.

Have amazon said why they won't remove it?

SixFeetUnder · 17/03/2013 16:29

I've seen it on there before, sadly. I haven't bought anything from Amazon for two years due to the fact they have no morals about what they sell and if you complain they will feed you some such line like they only make it available to the public and they don't censor.
They also had a book for sale a couple of years ago which was a how to guide on being a paedophile and only removed that after a huge online petition. The How To Train book was for sale at that time, I doubt they will rush to remove it.

becsparkel · 17/03/2013 16:32

It's been around for a few years now and has sold over 670,000 copies... here's hoping someone had a massive bonfire somewhere!

thebody · 17/03/2013 16:32

How vile.

zwischenzug · 17/03/2013 16:34

Ok ok, sorry I removed the previous post it was badly worded. What I was getting at is that the quotes from the book read as if they were written by somebody with severe mental health issues that obviously were not being dealt with.

IneedAsockamnesty · 17/03/2013 16:55

A 12-inch piece of weed eater chord works well as a beginner rod. It will fit in your purse or pocket.
Later, a plumber?s supply line is a good spanking tool. You can get it at Wal-Mart or any hardware store. Ask for a plastic, ¼ inch, supply line. They come in different lengths and several colors; so you can have a designer rod to your own taste. They sell for less than $1.00.

^^ these instructions are in that book, the authors need to be locked up.

mrsjay · 17/03/2013 17:04

I dont think they whip babies tbh it is a training method used by a fundemental patriarchial christian group, The duggar children are so well behaved because of this method (allegedly) It is barbaric though no way to raise children

WestieMamma · 17/03/2013 17:11

I'd like to think that the majority who've bought it did so without knowing the contents.

I bought a book about parenting a strong willed child way back when my, then undiagnosed with AS, daughter was pushing me over the edge. Nobody would help and I was desperate. I never got past the first chapter though as it quickly became apparent that the author went to the same parenting school as this lot. The book went in the bin.

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 17/03/2013 17:23

Only a few weeks ago the power of Mumsnet got those horrid t-shirts removed from Amazon.
If someone can tell me how I'd be happy to join in a similar campaign to get rid of this book.

AmandinePoulain · 17/03/2013 17:45

Maybe we can all email? And anyone on twitter can tweet it? I've already added the petition to my fb feed.

Schmoozer · 17/03/2013 18:05

Is the method that 19 kids and and counting dugguns use :(

plaingirly · 17/03/2013 18:27

They write a lot of books.

There is one called Preparing to be a Helpmeet for single girls as well as Created to be a Helpmeet for married women.

They are quite popular in certain circles.

Youtube has interviews .....
