I realise this has probably been raised before but I have only just become aware of this parenting book vile piece of shite, currently available for sale on amazon. The book advocates whipping babies as young as 4 months to "train" them to obey:

"At four months she was too unknowing to be punished for disobedience. But for her own good, we attempted to train her not to climb the stairs by coordinating the voice command of "No" with little spats on the bare legs. The switch was a twelve-inch long, one-eighth-inch diameter sprig from a willow tree."

Many more sickening quotes on this anti site Why Not To Train A Child

There's a petition to stop Amazon from selling it here: amazon refuse to carry books which advocate the physical abuse of children

Great blog piece here: amazon we find child abuse offensive

Signed, shared on FB and will not be buying anything from Amazon until this awfulness is removed Sad

ThatVikRinA22 · 18/03/2013 23:01

fuck me.

Shock

so someone writes a book on how to abuse children and amazon sell it?

ThatVikRinA22 · 18/03/2013 23:03

signed petition.

hope i dont get a load of spam now though....i hate giving out my email

IneedAsockamnesty · 18/03/2013 23:11

Vicar am I remembering correctly that your a police officer?

Can you think of any arrest able things the sale of this book could break?

ThatVikRinA22 · 18/03/2013 23:26

aye i am and sadly not sock

and the authors being in the US means its out of UK hands anyway....there are lots of numpites about who write books, cant arrest them all unfortunately.

telling people to hit their babies with sticks should be a bloody crime though i agree.
but its not.

it is if you follow their advice, in the UK anyway. Sadly being a total fuckwit and inciting such rubbish isnt really an arrestable offence....

however, follow their "advice!!" and it would be a different ball game, and id have no hesitation in arresting and applying for a PPO....

IneedAsockamnesty · 18/03/2013 23:37

Crappy news that you can't go and arrest them, shame really I expect it would look good on the news especially with tutu's involved.

But pleased to hear you can arrest anyone who follows there advice

BertieBotts · 18/03/2013 23:38

There's a page on their website about what a shame it is that their "discipline" is illegal in the UK Angry and how they were surprised at the fact UK parents were so up in arms about this. One fundamentalist Christian homeschooling group hosted them for a visit apparently...

I see that the writer talks about people thinking they do "dark and evil deeds" as though that is an understatement - well, fucko, hitting your kids with bits of trees is bloody well dark and evil.

Wallison · 19/03/2013 00:01

Sorry - I meant "overstatement".

Wowserz129 · 19/03/2013 00:11

Bigger full the idiots that buy a book like that tho??

Wallison · 19/03/2013 00:14

Their blog has a comments section on it: nogreaterjoy.org/2012/11/30/did-debi-pack-your-order/

I am in no way posting this so that you can flame them with inappropriate comments, oh no.

TomblibooTrousers · 19/03/2013 00:14

Aren't they documenting their abuse in writing these books? Surely what they have written could be used against them in some way.
I'm very distressed about this. It leaves me feeling so full of rage.

blackeyedsusan · 19/03/2013 00:15

their attitude to children is crap. their theology is crap too.

TomblibooTrousers · 19/03/2013 00:28

Have signed petition and posted a comment on their website.

Contradictionincarnate · 19/03/2013 00:31

shocking even worse that it seems to be in the name.of God!

Wallison · 19/03/2013 00:37

Agreed, contradictionincarnate. I am not a believer myself but I have many friends who are including members of my family and I am sure they would be shocked to see that this pair of chancers are calling assault of children a "biblical" act.

SquinkieBunnies · 19/03/2013 00:41

The Pearls who wrote that book are controversial here in US too. When my oldest was born 24 years ago we talked about it at a baby meeting and about how disgusting it was. Their children are grown up now and have some out against the way their parents treated them. They are sick.

ChippingInIsEggceptional · 19/03/2013 00:46

Fucking hell - why is he not behind bars and why the fuck is that book for sale anywhere :(

Mimishimi · 19/03/2013 02:47

My parents, especially dad, were of the 'spare the rod, spoil the child' variety. Albeit definitely not to this extent. I have to say that we were well behaved children but all three of us had huge issues with depression and trust of other people in our early twenties. None of us are trusting of authority one bit. I think advocating hitting babies is appalling.

SergeantSnarky · 19/03/2013 02:48

yanbu

pigletmania · 19/03/2013 07:43

That book is a manual on how to abuse children, it's bad enough tat they abuse children, but babies in arms doing what babies do is sick sick sick. They are twisted and depraved. Nowhere in the bible does it say to abuse and hit your child it's their own sadistic interpretation

AmandinePoulain · 19/03/2013 08:04

Do they seriously think that the reason that they weren't welcomed with open arms over here is because they home school?! Nothing to do with the fact that they advocate hitting babies with piping and/or sticks then? Hmm

SixFeetUnder · 19/03/2013 11:19

I think we're all in agreement that the book is awful but I think the fact that Amazon, a global company who surely do not need the profits from this tat, see fit to sell it and have no morals.

As said previously, I have not used them for over two years after the last campaign like this over the paedophile book they also thought was acceptable to sell (seriously, it was called The Guide To Child Loving or similar - you can google the case, it was removed, eventually).

I will not use them, even if they do remove this filth as they clearly think there is nothing wrong with it and they will sell inappropriate things again. Those of you saying you won't use them till the book is removed, please rethink and just stop using them altogether, it can be done. I can always find what I want by going elsewhere.
