The number overweight people at swimming today

I went swimming today with my 3 children. I am not exagerating to say that well over half the children and teenagers were overweight; some were seriously obese.

It really was noticable. Girls as well as boys. Anything from age 4 to 14.

Okay - at least they were exercising but I was really shocked.

The reactions - I am only on page 4 - are telling. People are being huffy and offended about a simple statement of fact. More people are overweight and more people are more overweight.

It's not shaming, it's a health problem.

I agree with you OP, I didn't read your original post as sneering.

My son is autistic and overweight...he gorges if left to his own devices.

I cannot buy normal loaves of bread even.

I take him swimming regularly because he loves it and also because he needs the exercise. It's working thankfully....his weight has dropped and is now static...as he is growing so he is thinning out.

It's so easy for children to eat far too much though. We've lost all sight of "normal". I say this a lot....I inherited a set of dinner plates when my auntie died...they come from the fifties and are at least a third smaller in size than current dinner plates. We use the smaller Ines and we are all losing weight.

Jeez....it's people like you being the reason I hate going swimming at my local pool.....ive paid £70 for this year's membership and haven't been once because I can't make myself get in a costume and face walking into what I know will be a pool full of judgey women like you. My poor kids miss out going too because I won't take them as I really don't want to subject others to my cellulite covered thighs and chunky arms!

Obviously I won't know what they're thinking but you've just reiterated how people feel towards overweight people.

It's a good thread though. And obesity is a problem that shouldn't be ignored. It's a preventable condition that's costing the NHS billions.

I'm the obese one doing breaststroke, in the slow lane, with my peers. Sometimes you get the thin whipper-snappers,with their swim hats, goggles and nose clips, get upset that us slow-lane fatties have a wider lane, swim a fast front-crawl up and down the middle of the slow lane. They obviously think we shouldn't be in the pool at all.

In our pool it is I and the old people in the slow lane and my teenagers if they want a chat.

The more people who are over weight who swim the better. Swimming is very good for you - no pressure on joints like with running on hard roads and particularly good for those who are over weight - try to get out of breath if you can. My swimming is usually so pathetically slow I might as well have pushed the hoover round the front room instead.

It is awful that there are so many over weight children. At least they are in the swimming pool and not simply glued to the computer eating shit.

I'm overweight myself but boy there are so many touchy overweight ladies here. YANBU, OP. I find it hypocritical that many British people keep telling me how fat Americans are (and that seems fine, never mind their feelings) yet one observation makes people go nuts.

And FYI, the fattest person I've seen is a Brit.

Out of interest, was there a vending machine selling sweets, crisps and fizzy drinks in the entrance - ready to take advantage of people who would be hungry after swimming to make extra money? There is one at my pool, and I think it's wrong they are allowed to make money this way.

Totally with you. And to reluctant mother and the others saying they hate people like pingu and they don't swim for people like pingu. No, you don't swim because you have body hang ups (like most of us!!) I am a size 6 and I still have body hang ups.

People really are so fat these days and seem to have no self discipline. I found myself having to justify why I was back to my jeans about 4 weeks after having my son ... because I don't eat shit all day long and sit on my arse!!!
