The number overweight people at swimming today

pingu2209 · 19/02/2013 18:40

I went swimming today with my 3 children. I am not exagerating to say that well over half the children and teenagers were overweight; some were seriously obese.

It really was noticable. Girls as well as boys. Anything from age 4 to 14.

Okay - at least they were exercising but I was really shocked.

OP posts:

People are responding because the rise in obesity is STILL a big big issue!
As for Ricksheadtilt - for goodness sake get a grip.

This is the essence of your response "How dare anyone comment that they are shocked at the huge numbers of really overweight people there are, something which has just hit them after seeing loads of people in an undressed state".

What - are we supposed to not notice or comment about something which amounts to a national health crises on the basis that referring to it is hurtful to overweight people?

Sparklingbrook · 10/06/2016 20:08

No point responding to the OP.

SuperFlyHigh · 10/06/2016 20:49

I think the point the OP is making is yes the kids are swimming but then when they come out of the pool it's straight to McDs, Subway etc pigging out.

When I was a child McDs didn't open in UK until I was about 8, but also although we had crisps, chocolate, sweet etc they were very much treats and not encouraged. Also we tended to walk to school and am sure had more gym/playing field exercise. We also played out more - i was always on my bike riding round the streets or going with friends swimming at weekends, playing in street etc. kids these days don't seem to do that, a friend of mine with teenage child (19) and adult child (22) says her kids didn't play out as kids due to safety. Her DC now though aren't overweight far from it. Their mum is though but she has had battles with her weight.

I recall as a teenager generally most teens i knew weren't overweight, there were eg 3 children in the class who were overweight but the rest were either a normal weight or like me skinny. But again we were always active, caught the bus, walked part of the way etc. ice skating was common at weekends as wells swimming.

So I do think OP has a very valid point.

SuperFlyHigh · 10/06/2016 20:51

sparkling didn't notice it was a zombie thread but I suppose people are still responding as the problem is very relevant today!

Steala · 15/06/2016 10:16

I'm really surprised at how many people this thread has upset. It's not about children with medical issues (steroid use/mobility issues). If only children with medical issues were overweight and the OP had said she had gone swimming and seen a/two overweight children, that would have been nasty but that was not the point she was making. It was also not about judging overweight people who are exercising. Of course we are all entitled to go to the same places and do the same things whatever put weight. It is simply that extra weight on so many was more apparent to her then.

I am not currently overweight but I used to be moderately so. When people observed that there were huge numbers of overweight people, I didn't feel judged. In a way, I felt vindicated: see, it really is a problem - it's even affected me! This was because I was active, walked everywhere, ate lots of veg and did not consider my eating to be excessive. In reality, I was eating a small packet of crisps, a small chocolate bar, a glass or two of wine most days in addition to my meals, having a weekly takeaway and being s bit heavy handed with the pasta. In black and white, it's clear why the weight crept on but I didn't think I was doing anything unusual.

The fact that vast numbers are overweight really is a fact. It shows that something or multiple things are going wrong and, rather than politely ignoring it at the risk of causing offence, or feeling upset and defensive when it is raised, shouldn't we be open and work out how to make our society healthier?

KERALA1 · 15/06/2016 12:01

Exactly Steala. Helped out with dds swimming class yesterday so thought of this thread. Each class of 30 had 3 plus seriously obese children.

Reluctant mother is spot on. What I really find repulsive is people judging others when they are doing something that is probably mentally and physically very difficult for them! What's even worse is passing over those judges pants onto children, I feel so sorry for them! Remember many of these children will prob be eating less than your kids, getting bullied and full of self loathing brought about by attitudes like yours.

ZOMBIE THREAD Restarted four years later by someone who just wanted to swear at the OP.

Gwilt160981 · 09/03/2017 06:26

People of all shapes and sizes go swimming what's the problem? Get over it.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 09/03/2017 06:56

I know TheClaws but it gave me a good laugh this morning Grin

I never think anything other than at least the children are exercising. Surely that's a good thing?

sofiainwonderland · 09/03/2017 07:13

I'm a slim size 6, and you managed to offend me as well. People can do whatever they want with their bodies, their weight, their lifestyle choices, even if they were in McDonalds you still have no right to judge. Yes, I do agree it is unhealthy to be overweight however that is not my problem. Maybe people go there to lose weight. Maybe they are feeling comfortable with their weight. Etc. YABU.

LouisevilleLlama · 09/03/2017 07:18

It seems this has been resurrected twice now

Mammylamb · 09/03/2017 07:19

As there are so many fat folk these days, I think there is something about our society and environment that is wrong. I'm a fat person myself but I do exercise more than some of my slim friends. Fat shaming will not make people slimmer, but I bet it makes you feel better about yourself

WorldWideWish · 09/03/2017 07:20

Zombie thread!

user1485166754 · 09/03/2017 10:13

Sorry but I completely agree with the OP here. If an adult it overweight then that's up to them but letting your child become obese is quite frankly child abuse. Think of the dangerous health issues a parent would be causing these poor children. They are overweight or obese as a result of what their parents are feeding them and lack of exercise. It is just as bad as starving the child.

babybubblescomingsoon · 09/03/2017 10:19

I have an under active thyroid that only got picked up on when I was 19. Before that although I was incredibly fit physically, I looked overweight and despite my incredibly healthy diet, it was nearly impossible to lose wait. Dickheads like you are the reason I had severe confidence issues when I was in my teens. And those issues have followed me into adulthood. You have no idea why those teens are overweight, it could be a medical issue like mine. At least they're out and doing sports. You should be ashamed for yourself. Get on with you own problems and leave people alone.

user1485166754 · 09/03/2017 10:28

Baby - I highly doubt all of those kids have medical issues as to why they are overweight (although perhaps a couple do). More like medical issues as a result of being overweight - which is a disgrace on the parents part.
