AIBU?

" Just marking my place.." WTF?

Why do people feel the need to go on a thread to "mark my place"? How does that contribute to the discussion underway? I get really annoyed by this action and it's the most pointless thing a poster can do. Why oh why?

Please someone enlighten me to the point of this 'marking of place' .To me it's rude, pointless and utterly unnecessary. I get the "bumping" of thread bit, but the marking of place, I don't get. To me it's self-indulgent, rude, and just plain attention-seeking! Why oh why?

Dryjuice - but 'later' the thread won't be in active convos, that's why people put it in their 'Threads I'm on', as you can't hold in your head the title or op, to start to search for it, heads have a limited capacity.

Backforgood Or alternatively, you could watch them which I think is better than marking on thread.
Jolly I see what you mean but sometimes people invest a lot in terms of time (and research I believe), and really feel involved in the op's journey (esp in relationships) and the op just disappears without a trace/a thank you/update etc

Some people I believe do care. [Smile

But others I agree might just be nosy Hmm

" Come back op" makes me laugh though though I think I have done it once

I don't get it either, I just use "watch thread" - and I'll be using bookmarking now I know how to add it. Don't hate placemarking half as much as I hate endless" bumps though. MN seems ok for that but I gave up on Amazon's Kindle forum because you'd click on a thread and it could be up to 80% bumps from people determined that "their" thread stay on page 1.

Is bumping annoying?
At least if you have nothing to say but have interest in a thread and want it to progress it's better to attract traffic than marking a place on a thread that is already progressing.

You asked why - I've explained why I do (not claiming to be speaking for anyone else). You're entitled to think it's better to do it another way, just as posters are entitled to do things the way we want. I'm sure there's lots of things people do on here that annoy others - let's take swearing for one - but that's all part and parcel of coming onto such a massive forum. It takes all sorts, and we're never all going to agree with each other.

Bumping because you posted at a quiet time and it looks like no-one saw your post is fine IMO. But bumping 2 minutes after you posted is just rude I think and where people post repeatedly "bump - this was on page 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I think is revoltingly egotistical. (also hate multiple exclamation marks - I'm with Vetinari, sign of a deranged mind!)

Backforgood I respect that and it's true we can't all agree, nevertheless oh so annoying.

OMG I have sussed the "bookmark" - there it is floating on the right of a reply to a thread.

Still learning something new every day. Next - if I've bookmarked does it become a thread "I'm On"?

I do think though that instead of a full stop or a 'marking my place' can people not think of something to say?

No, bookmarking does not put it on TIO. Would be nice if it did or if there was a special 'bookmarked' area!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*

I want to use this for anyone who writes "Just marking my place" on a distressing thread Grin

No it doesn't, if you haven't posted on the thread. Just putting a bookmark, with no post, does not put it in TIO.

And
