AIBU?

" Just marking my place.." WTF?

Dryjuice25 · 11/02/2013 12:27

Why do people feel the need to go on a thread to "mark my place"? How does that contribute to the discussion underway? I get really annoyed by this action and it's the most pointless thing a poster can do. Why oh why?

Please someone enlighten me to the point of this 'marking of place' .To me it's rude, pointless and utterly unnecessary. I get the "bumping" of thread bit, but the marking of place, I don't get. To me it's self-indulgent, rude, and just plain attention-seeking! Why oh why?

ah it's all explained now. I thought there was some special thread 'tag' I was missing out on.

I do get annoyed at missing the thread deletion messages.

I'm not sure you can retort with the same acronym. I think you have to use a different one or it is just
'you are a poopy head'
'no you are a poopy head'

Although I might be wrong. I am getting sucked into the world of acronyms but it is murkier than I thought. Or MTIT.

you said attention seeking. That marking place on thread was attention seeking.

I just thought it was funny that you started a thread about the horror of attention seeking.

And whilst we are making rules, underlined and everything, mine will be do not start threads about things that have upset you on another thread. Say it on that thread

I am not a lurker.

I don't know how to lurk.

Threads I'm watching feels a lot more voyeuristic than posting!

Tantrum Trust me that was not my intention.

I will heed your advice not

Create a small portfolio and keep it handy.
Mine has "my big book of retorts" on the front in green biro.
I keep it next to "my big book of wankers" for ease of reference.
It's like a small section dedicated to festering resentment and irritation.

Nagoo,I beg to differ, At least the OP doesn't get to see that someone is being voyeuristic/unhelpful. Who cares what people watch in private? I don't.

They are two different functions - as lots of people explained when this exact same question was asked about a month ago.

If I think a thread might be interesting either for me to find something out, or maybe feel it's something I could contribute something too, but I've not got time to read through all the previous posts / am in a rush to go out / have just been called for my dinner / etc., then I will mark my spot, as it might be a few hours before I can come back to it and it might not be in active convos. By marking my spot, it pops up where I start each time I log on, which is 'Threads I'm on'.
'Watch this thread', for me, and many others, is a different thing altogether. That is for threads that have some interesting info or links on that I know I might want to refer to in the coming months - for example I've got some holiday ideas threads marked, or there's one about writing personal statments and another to do with university choices. Not things I need to read tonight, but things I may want to read in May or June.
2 completely different things.
Can't really see why it would bother anyone - you just skip to the next post, surely.

I see what you mean but I hope there is very few of those people! But do people really just post to be nosy on a stranger? What do they get out of that?

I was reading another very funny post, but it ceased to be funny when people started placemarking... why on earth dont they use the bookmark function..

it ruins the flow of reading, cos you have to read it to see that you dont need to read it so the thread went

read the snooping mother in law one if you dont believe me.... totally runnined. its like having the adverts interupting the viewing...... I wish i could hide all the markers!

Backforgood I didn't see the thread you're writing about.
If you have no time to post, then come back later when you can. The thread is not going to run away!

Sorry DD pressed post too early . The nosiness comment came from reading a thread in the pregnancy section a few months ago. I must admit it was a bit intriguing. The OP didn't ever come back to update. Every few weeks someone will post on this thread, something along the lines of 'just wondering how you are OP? I've been worried about you'. Call my cynical but have they really been worrying about this person ?'

AFM I'm a watcher rather than a marker.

It's almost as bad a 'Hope the OP is ok' which normally translates to 'Get back and give us an update'* Grin

*unless of course the thread is about someone in a situation where they wouldn't be ok (violence etc)
