... to think MN advertising ALCOHOL is absolutely irresponsible?

TurquoiseTranquility · 07/02/2013 18:34

Just got my weekly 'parenting news' email from MN and was appalled to discover it features an advert of a "new lower alcohol" wine Hmm. I never thought I was much of a snob (I'd hope not, anyway! Confused) but I do think that for a family-oriented website to advertise alcohol is not just inappropriate, it's kind of hypocritical. Especially as some of MN users may be struggling with alcohol addiction, or being victims of their family members' drinking and related issues. I mean COME ON, a 5.5% alcohol wine isn't exactly some sort of an "alcohol replacement therapy" product Angry! AIBU?

Mumsnet should stop advertising holidays. I haven't been out of the country in over ten years. It offends and saddens me. [supersadface]

Tee2072 · 07/02/2013 20:09

Do you want me to ring the DM, ABF? So we can get that face on the front page?

MrsWembley · 07/02/2013 20:11

Speechless...

ShakeWellBeforeOpening · 07/02/2013 20:11

I think MN should have a product survey that involves wine !

OP you are being a little bit silly !

Have a Brew and a Biscuit

CheckpointCharlie · 07/02/2013 20:12

Ha ha tee ha ha manic at the video!
Off to sniff about in kitchen till wine appears. Full fat wine.

Uppermid · 07/02/2013 20:12

What I'd really like to know is where is this family orientated section of mumsnet?

I wouldn't let my children anywhere near this website. It's for me, me, me!!!

Should we also ban any ads to do with Mother's Day cos someone might be sensitive if they've lost their mum recently?

Op get a grip.

ledkr · 07/02/2013 20:12

Me too maryz we should start the half term drunk thread. Lasts for 9 days.

BIWI · 07/02/2013 20:13

Trills - apologies.

(But it is MN's strapline!)

Ledkr see you then! Have bribed dd with five mins more of rummikub to fetch me a ginormous glass of wine. WHAMMO!

Although she has just admitted to spilling some so she has been packed off to bed with a smack.

Joking. But only about the smack.

Tee2072 · 07/02/2013 20:20

Are half term isn't until the week after next and it's only 2 days off school! I live in the wrong place!

Of course, we get 2 weeks at Easter.

HecateWhoopass · 07/02/2013 20:21

Can I clarify, are you saying that you don't think alcohol should be advertised full stop, or just that a site that is predominantly a site for parents but is used by plenty who aren't - shouldn't advertise low alcohol wine but it is ok for it to be advertised elsewhere to people who may or may not be parents?

Or is it that alcohol just shouldn't be advertised to or perhaps accessible to parents?

That's really 'nanny state' stuff, isn't it? If we're old enough to reproduce, we're old enough to cope with an advert for wine. If the argument is that some people may be struggling with addiction - that's an argument for the banning of all alcohol advertising everywhere, isn't it?

AmazingBouncingFerret · 07/02/2013 20:21

That's a good idea Tee, remind me to hide the empty wine bottles before the photographer arrives though.

DeepRedBetty · 07/02/2013 20:22

I actually drank some of that low alcohol wine. Tasted like slightly off Schloer.

Anyway, time to drink some of the Wine (and Gin) me and Hecate lifted this morning out of Justine's office while HQ were so hungover they didn't see a troll thread make it all the way to 1000 posts.

SingingSands · 07/02/2013 20:22

"absolutely irresponsible" "appalled" "inappropriate"

Er... overreacting much there OP? Do you need the smelling salts passed?

MrsWembley · 07/02/2013 20:23

I'm struggling with alcohol issues at the moment...

I can't find the fucking open bottle!Hmm

MrsWembley · 07/02/2013 20:24

Ooh Betty, (Wink) how did that thread end? I missed the bloody deletion post.Sad

quoteunquote · 07/02/2013 20:29

WARNING

Do NOT use low alcohol wine in cooking, my husband bought some by mistake, in a bid to use it up, as it was undrinkable, we used it in a casserole, absolutely disgusting ruined perfectly good food.

OP, you are totally unreasonable to object to MN accepting wine advertising.

hugoagogo · 07/02/2013 20:30

The low alcohol wine doesn't bother me, but I am a bit Hmm about wonga.

MrsWembley · 07/02/2013 20:38

S'okay, found it... Wine

RedToothBrush · 07/02/2013 20:50

THIS IS A FAMILY WEBSITE!!!!

Do not talk about fannies & boobies in any context.

Please won't someone think of the children who will be reading and will be mentally scarred for life.

Tee2072 · 07/02/2013 20:54

I'll mark my diary for you ABF. If it's not in there, it doesn't happen.

MechanicalTheatre · 07/02/2013 20:54

AllYours any sort of family gathering, my mum breaks out the Schloer. God knows why, everyone drinks in my family, but we are heavily culturally protestant, so heaven forbid anyone actually drinks enough to feel.
