I'm waiting for him to get home from work. I'm so cross. We were struggling at Xmas and he has spent £182 in December alone.

I am sick of him playing games constantly on his phone anyway. New Year's Eve was spent at his friends for a 'party' but most of the time they were on their phones or talking about this game.

What game is it??? I've heard of kids spending that much but it was kind of a scam. Is he gambling?

ThePinkOcelot · 02/01/2013 22:01

£182 on games?! YANBU! That is ridiculous!

lurkedtoolong · 02/01/2013 22:02

How much on iPhone games? £182 - how is that even possible?

shesariver · 02/01/2013 22:02

He's spent £182 on a game for his phone?! I didn't even realise you could spend that amount.

OhMyGlob · 02/01/2013 22:04

On coins for Marvel hero card game

I'd be furious if he'd done it knowingly but are you sure he has? I remember seeing something a while back on Watchdog about children accidentally racking up huge bills playing these games, something to do with buying 'in-app purchases' that they didn't realise cost 'real' money.

I could be clutching at straws but can't think why anyone would knowingly spend almost 200 quid on an iPhone game.

foreverondiet · 02/01/2013 22:06

OMG thats ridiculous.

OnlyWantsOne · 02/01/2013 22:06

What a donkey. I'd be livid!

OhMyGlob · 02/01/2013 22:07

No it's not a scam as he has changed card details a few time to spread the cost. I'm sure he won't realise that it adds up to this, but still, what a dickhead

maxmillie · 02/01/2013 22:07

My colleague's son spent £400 on "in game purchases" before he realised and disabled it! Are you sure he just doesn't realise he is being charged for them? Or do kids play on his phone?

perceptionInaPearTree · 02/01/2013 22:08

Is it a gambling game? Ps I'd be livid too!

TinkerMcJingles · 02/01/2013 22:18

My son did this once accidentally, he was 8 at the time. He spent £150 on coins for a certain game. They were very nice about it and let me have a refund as a one off. However, as an adult, I can understand why you are so mad. He really should know better. £182 is probably 2-3 weeks worth of shopping Shock

OhMyGlob · 02/01/2013 22:21

I have just spoken to him and he said he knew he was spending bits and bobs on it but had not idea it added up to that.

Well tough, it is £14 every few days. Even one lot of £14 I'd be cross about.

OP posts:
StuntGirl · 02/01/2013 22:26

That's more than 'bits and bobs' though. The idiot. What was his reaction when you told him?

OhMyGlob · 02/01/2013 22:35

He's really sorry apparently. He looks gutted that the amount is so high when added up. I've come to bed and he sent me a text saying he's sorry and he'll do extra shifts to pay it back.

I think I am so angry because we have been so hard up. I had a night out were I only spent £5 and he made me feel bad for that.

We went to a party and I couldn't afford a present so give the girl some wine I received for Xmas.

All the while he was spending money on a fucking game. £262 since end of Oct. before that it was another game he spent £98 in 2 months.

I had no idea he even spent money on games

wannabedreams · 02/01/2013 22:40

yanbu I would be furious!!!

StuntGirl · 02/01/2013 22:43

Wow. How has he not even noticed that amount of money going out?! And to give anyone shit for spending money if you yourself are spending on something as frivolous as iPhone games is a bit bloody rich.

I would not be happy at all in your shoes OP. I think to be honest he needs to stop playing games on his phone. Christ, you could have bought a DS or PS Vita and a few games for that amount of money, if he likes portable gaming so much.

halcyondays · 02/01/2013 22:43

Yanbu, what a waste of money

mrsjay · 02/01/2013 22:44

maybe it is time to let the iphone contract run out and save a bit of money, and get him a payg cant he control himself Id be so angry

Cortana · 02/01/2013 22:46

Jesus wept that's a lot.

I'd be discussing with DP whether the iphone is too much of a temptation with regard to these games. They can be moreish (trying to avoid the word addictive), perhaps best he limits his own access by giving up his phone?

Damash12 · 02/01/2013 23:44

How old is he 10?? Seriously, Mario coins?? He must be on the game for hours. He certainly must know what he's spent, I started looking at the dragonville app but every day got pop messages to purchase the food, no way and quickly got bored. To purchase them you do have to select and confirm about 3 times so he must have known. Sorry but I'd kill him if I'd been that strapped for cash.

GregBishopsBottomBitch · 02/01/2013 23:48

Fuck me, I'd be more the cross, I'd be spitting fire, ready to shove a red hot poker up his arse.

Read him the riot act.

HollyBerryBush · 02/01/2013 23:52

Easy done.

My fault entirely, I didnt put parent control on a kindle, DS3 spent 80 quid in 4 days - Amazon are marvellous - they have refunded it all

CarlingBlackMabel · 02/01/2013 23:53

It sounds as if his relationship with these games is addictive.

I'd change his apple id password and not tell him the new one. If this is possible.

amck5700 · 02/01/2013 23:55

I was 3/4 of the way down this waiting for you to say how old your son was before I realised you were talking about a grown man!!!

My 10 year old spent 20 quid last Christmas on doubloons for some game on his ipod - he's asked, I said no.....the he did it anyway - I saw the bill, read the riot act, put a password on the account and took the money from his Christmas money - lesson learned for us both. Was going to suggest the same, but probably wouldn't work on a grown man!!!

Jeez - what was he thinking!!!! scrap that, obviously he was not fucking thinking much!

Does he have any other addiction issues?
