To think Dh shouldn't have told me!

As usual I bought all my own presents (with dhs money) and then gave them to him to wrap.
Last night out of the blue he said 'I nearly bought you something extravagant! I looked at a Mulberry bag, did lots of research, online, went to shop etc, then decided it was too much money and couldn't actually afford it' Hmm

Not sure how I feel about it, might say for his 40th 'well I did think of booking you a holiday in Fiji, but then decided not to' happy birthday here's some skin care and a new jumper!

What do you think? AIBU to think he shouldn't have mentioned it?

YANBU. IMO you are now perfectly within your rights to insist he get you the bag (if you want it that is).

That's pretty mean to mention it! I would do the birthday pay back find something he would love then send him a photo of it tell him you couldn't afford the real thing.

christmosschops30 · 26/12/2012 16:26

last month he bought a camera lens for £1600 so don't feel sorry for him.
I always have to buy my own stuff, even on Mother's Day I went into town on the Saturday evening because he hasn't been and said he would get it on the dayHmm

Mulberry have a sale now...

SantasHoHoHo · 26/12/2012 16:32

Personally I'd never spend that much on a handbag, it's obscene. But, everyone to their own and all that.

christmosschops30 · 26/12/2012 16:32

I wanted the bayswater or alexa, never go in the sale

Bobyan · 26/12/2012 16:32

You either stop behaving like you are his mother, or accept him and suck it up.

christmosschops30 · 26/12/2012 16:33

Yeah well it's always been my dream purchase, I didn't ask for one or expect one!

My point is I thought it was mean to mention it

OP posts:
HECTheHallsWithRowsAndFolly · 26/12/2012 16:34

Did you ask him why he decided to tell you that?

And why do you buy your own stuff? Because otherwise you'd have nothing? Is that cos he can't be arsed or is there some other reason?

What would happen if you didn't do it?

EarnestDullard · 26/12/2012 16:35

They've got Bayswaters and Alexas in the sale, quite a few different colours.

CailinDana · 26/12/2012 16:36

If he spent £1600 on a camera lens then surely the "not being able to afford it" thing is just bullshit?

SantaIAmSoFuckingRock · 26/12/2012 16:36

why are you buying your own special occasion gifts from him but getting him to wrap it? what's the point in him wrapping it? Confused

christmosschops30 · 26/12/2012 16:40

I don't know, he used to get gifts but over the years it's stopped

No it is probably true just because he spent the £1600 on the lens......making him an even bigger meany.

SantaKissedBonkeyMollocks · 26/12/2012 16:56

I'm Confused at buying your own presents.

Why would you do that?

I would rather have nothing than do that!

Glossynotflossy · 26/12/2012 17:00

Raffles I an not a seleb or exremely wealthy and have Mulberry bags and can assure you that people don't think they are fake. Hard as it may be to believe but people save up the money and don't spend on other things and buying a nice bag is a treat.

OP if you want a Mulberry bag they are in the sale like others have said.

jinglebellyalltheway · 26/12/2012 17:02

stop buying gifts from him that arent from him

just don't get any, then when MIL etc ask what he got you you can tell the truth - "nothing"

and buy YOURSELF the bag - from you!

FestiveElement · 26/12/2012 17:03

If you buy your own presents with his money and you don't mind doing that, then do it once more and get the bag.

He'd probably have chosen the wrong colour anyway.

SantaIAmSoFuckingRock · 26/12/2012 17:04

do you buy him gifts? if so, why?

jinglebellyalltheway · 26/12/2012 17:06

and if anyone asks what he got you this year, answer "money" - cause that's the truth! he didn't get you what you bought with it!

do this on front of him as much as possible!

Alisvolatpropiis · 26/12/2012 17:08

Um...you don't have to be extremely rich to have a Mulberry bag or indeed a small collection of them hmm]

People can save money for things they really want. People who don't drink or smoke tend to be able to save more quickly for these things too. Just ask my mother.

OP YANBU. It doesn't really matter that it's something you really would have liked. I detest it when people say things like that. It's like "look how thoughtful I almost was". I have considered buying people presents and then realised I really can't afford it. I never tell them!

OP- get yourself online or to your local House of Fraser...this year both Alexa's and Bayswaters are in the sale (don't remember them ever being so before).

scottishmummy · 26/12/2012 17:11

if you want the bag shift your backside and buy it yourself. save or work
its appalling in 21st century sitting waiting for man to buy you a present
do you have so little autonomy that if you want a bag it depends upon him buying it?
