I don't know how they get away with this - they dodge backlash all the time.

There will be an ethnic war soon in this country. DM will be 98 per cent responsible.

And stop telling me to.

vivizone · 24/12/2012 01:57

I don't actively seek it out to read. Discussion on another board that had the link.

I agree with your opening statement. I don't want to follow the link to that cack.

EllieArroway · 24/12/2012 05:35

So stop reading it

This attitude seriously fucks me off Angry. Whether we like it or we don't, the Daily Mail is a large part of the Zeitgeist of this country. It doesn't matter one whit whether Vivizone reads it or not - it's the fact that so many people do & believe every last fucking word of it. People who are incapable of forming opinions of their own, can't be arsed to research the information they are presented with & are developing unpleasant levels of hatred towards large sections of society based on bullshit information. That matters.

I loathe the Daily Mail with every fibre of my being. I wouldn't use it to pick up dog shit in the park and I would never click on any link. But even I know what it has to say about most things, because it has a very loud foghorn of a voice, and so do it's moronic misinformed readers.

Unfortunately, much as I hate those arseholes, I am passionately in support of a free press. So we have to put up with them. But I seriously think our country would be better off if it went the way of the News of the World.

And don't get me started on Peter Hitchens.....................Angry.

So, YANBU, Vivi.

CurrentBun · 24/12/2012 06:05

Well it is fact that many will choose to come to Britain. Who wouldn't faced with the of the lack of opportunity many face in their own countries. And yes, no doubt a number will be eligible for benefits but can you really see it being as easy for them as the DM is making it out to be.

We already have a large population of Eastern Europeans in my city. Those who wanted to work abroad have been coming in for the past 5 years. It's really nothing new. If they come and find genuine work then good luck to them.

Whether we can cope with an influx of more people (from any EU country) eligible to claim benefits is yet to be seen. With the changes to the benefit system coming next year leaving many of our current residents in poorer circumstances I can see how this article is set to rile people.

Isityouorme · 24/12/2012 08:08

As with all media, take it with a pinch of salt. Most stories are based on truth but get exaggerated, dramatised, key facts forgotten or embellished and sometimes downright lies printed.

There is some truth to this article but I sincerely doubt the DM will be 98% responsible.

And if you hate the paper so much WHY are you reading it?!

gimmecakeandcandy · 24/12/2012 08:13

But there does need to be a proper discussion on immigration and the fact that there doesn't seem to be any control on it. My parents were immigrants who came over here in the 60's and they say the same. Just because people are concerned it doesn't make them bigots.

gimmecakeandcandy · 24/12/2012 08:14

What's wrong with Peter Hitchens?! I think he says some interesting things.

PumpkinPositive · 24/12/2012 08:16

Interesting that it says "England". Will tese migrants bypass the rest of the UK then?

Isityouorme · 24/12/2012 08:17

Sadly People think that any concerns raised over the number of immigrants automatically means you are racist. Not so. I am massively concerned as there are already housing shortages, too many cars on the road, no jobs, a screwed economy, and so on.

I am seriously worried about my children's future.

TheGrinchWhoStoleTweasels · 24/12/2012 08:17

The problem is, many people in this country read headlines without concerning themselves about the actual truth (if there is any) behind it.

The majority of the anti-immigration, racist, shit spouted by people is headlines they've read on the front of this and other papers.

So, it's ok saying don't read it. To be fair it wouldn't matter if the OP did as she knows it's hideous, inflammatory, racist bullshit. Lots of other people, however, don't. And that's where the problem is.

LRDtheFeministDude · 24/12/2012 08:29

'But there does need to be a proper discussion on immigration and the fact that there doesn't seem to be any control on it.'

Why doesn't that discussion start with some real facts? There is loads of control on immigration. Do you mean, within the EU?

(I get that you might be being serious but as someone who's spent the last four years wrestling with getting any sort of leave to remain for my DH who's been over here since he was 7 and paid tax here since he started working, I can absolutely promise you that there is no such 'fact' that there's no control on immigration!)

Mailwatch is a good place to vent DM hatred.

General loathing and derision towards the Daily Mail is slowly becoming more mainstream, you hear more everyday references to it. Sadly, I think this is only temporary.

hackmum · 24/12/2012 08:43

EllieArroway: "It doesn't matter one whit whether Vivizone reads it or not - it's the fact that so many people do & believe every last fucking word of it."

Quite. It's a bit like saying, "Well, if you don't like Christians being thrown to the lions, don't go and watch the Christians being thrown to the lions."

samandi · 24/12/2012 08:44

Interesting that it says "England". Will tese migrants bypass the rest of the UK then?

Perhaps it says "1,114,368 Eastern Europeans have uprooted to live in England" because they've settled in England. Most immigrants do settle in England.

I don't have much truck with the view that being concerned about immigration makes you a frothing at the mouth bigot who is going to go out and murder immigrants. Frankly, attitudes like that irritate me more than those people whose views lean in the opposite direction.

StarOfLightMcKings3 · 24/12/2012 08:46

'I am seriously worried about my children's future. '

Why? They can go and live in empty Bulgaria if they feel crowded out can't they? That's how it works.

strumpetpumpkin · 24/12/2012 08:50

id rather they come here than have to live like that

HollyBerryBush · 24/12/2012 09:02

Will they be an asset to the UK? I doubt it.

LRDtheFeministDude · 24/12/2012 09:07

Why, exactly, holly?

My DH's taxes pay into the pot for people like you (assuming you're not an immigrant yourself), and he has no recourse to public funds. So his money is paying into the infrastructure of this country - is that not an 'asset'?

bamboostalks · 24/12/2012 09:15

The majority will not have the skills we need. It's fine if you're in rural Gloucestershire no one is heading there, if you're in Newham,London where the housing list is busting, the schools are so overstretched etc then yes these immigrants are a huge threat. Nothing in that article is a lie. We all know that. My local high street has become a focal point for a Roma community. It is now impossible to get in your car without having someone try to clean the windscreen. Twice my door has been opened after I refused to pay. It really is not pleasant.

Oh, dear.

I don't think you understand how taxes work, holly. It requires lots of people to pay for you.

I am reporting your nasty, racist post.

moondog · 24/12/2012 09:26

This is how it works you see, Holly in the lala land that is frequened by the right on MNers of the world who see a land of milk and honey where people of every hue and persuasion laugh and sing together and respect each other's multi-cultured ways.

Next thing you'll be reported for what you think and it won't be too the pleasant women at MN Towers but the police.

For an intelligent woman, LRD you can act in an astoundingly stupid manner.
