To be pissed off at SIL? Baby name related

strawberrypenguin · 21/11/2012 12:05

My SIL had her DS a couple of weeks ago. He was nameless until yesterday. SIL and BIL had been making comments over the last couple of weeks as to how they couldn't use certain names because they would sound silly with my DS's name when they were said together (my DS is just over a year old)
They announced a name yesterday and its my DS's middle name! Now I know logically that no one 'owns' a name but I'm rather pissed off by this AIBU? I should also say that I do have some SIL issues (shes hardly spoken to me since she found out I was pg a couple of years ago although she does still see DH and DS) so not sure if this is colouring my opinion on this.

Do they know it is his middle name? I am trying to think and I don't think I know/remember the middle names of most of my nieces and nephews.

cheekybaubles · 21/11/2012 12:08

Even if they do know, is it not a compliment? I am sure I wouldn't call my child the name of an offspring of someone I didn't like?

Lancelottie · 21/11/2012 12:08

I think yu're being U, yes. DS's cousin has his name and middle name, reversed (think Daniel Thomas and Thomas Daniel). They like it!

Personally I don't think you're being unreasonable. My two DS both have lovely unusual names and I'd be very annoyed if anybody I know 'copied' either of the names.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/11/2012 12:10

Do they know? I don't know any of my nieces middle names and I see them all regularly.

MrsMangoBiscuit · 21/11/2012 12:10

I think it might be colouring your opinion. If my SIL had a saughter and called her my DD's middle name, I'd be flattered. She obviously thinks you have good taste. :)

DeWe · 21/11/2012 12:11

I wouldn't have thought they'd have realised.

Gind it strange that they needed a name that "went with" your ds' name though. That to me is wierd.

Whocansay · 21/11/2012 12:11

YABU. Your child is not addressed by his middle name and very few people will even know its his middle name. I'm not sure why you're pissed off tbh. I think you're reading too much into it. Maybe they just like the name?

missymoomoomee · 21/11/2012 12:12

I think YABU, is it a family name or something that means a lot to your DHs family? Regardless of that, there are probably a few million people in the world with the same name anyway and its not like they have copied his 1st name.

BarbarianMum · 21/11/2012 12:14

YABU as you have pointed out, names are not 'owned'.

Just send them a message saying "You have chosen Bob as your DS's name? How lovely! That is my DS's middle name! It is like my DS will have a little mini-me all his life. Such a sweet connection between the cousins. My DS and his little shadow Bob!"

They will soon pick something else. Grin

VolumeOfACone · 21/11/2012 12:16

I don't think it matters at all. I am surprised anyone would be upset by this. Middle names are only ever used to say your wedding vows.

FlaminNoraImPregnantPanda · 21/11/2012 12:16

I think you are being unreasonable. It's only a middle name. I could understand if it was the first name. My husband really wants to name our baby (if a boy) after his grandad who died when he was little but my sister's boy already has that name. That would be weird, so we'll have it as a middle name instead.

BuddyTheChristmasElf · 21/11/2012 12:16

I can only remember one of my nieces and nephew's middle names TBH, so I may well use one of the others as I can't remember what they are! they've never been used since the birth announcement! (apart from the one who sometimes gets called, lets say Rosie May, so I know that one)
YABU

ThatArtfulPussy · 21/11/2012 12:17

I saw your title and thought "Yep". Now I've read your post I feel no different. Who cares? Or is his middle name Uneeq?

I'm sure you'd agree that the names do now go together perfectly.

valiumredhead · 21/11/2012 12:17

As you said, names are not owned.

maillotjaune · 21/11/2012 12:17

YABU - for all you know you may have stolen my DS1's fab middle name to use for your DS.

Oh hang on, I don't own the name do I? Nor do you.

BuddyTheChristmasElf · 21/11/2012 12:18

I'd also bet that very few of my rellies know MY middle name, I wouldn't raise an eyebrow if it was used as a first name

strawberrypenguin · 21/11/2012 12:19

They do know its his name yes and I don't think it's one they had had for a while because MIL said they had a really long 'short list' when he was born. I know my DS isn't 'known' by his middle name I guess I find it weird that with all the lovely names out there they couldn't find a different one. It not like DS has 20 names or something! But I'm prepared to accept IABU!

doublecakeplease · 21/11/2012 12:20

Yabu and a little bit silly - they'll probably like having it in common :) Also - why just pissed off at the SIL? Did BIL not have a say in the name choice?

strawberrypenguin · 21/11/2012 12:21
