To be shocked at this parent

Just parked up and saw a family, mum, dad, two kids and a baby go into a car.

Baby was in a sling with mum. The mum jumped.in the back seat, no seatbelt on, baby still in sling and they drove off....no intention of putting the baby in a car seat!

I'm Shock and Angry at their blatant disrepect for their own lives and that of their baby.

Looked like a very well to do family!

Are you in the UK? If so and you caught the reg plate local police will pay them a friendly visit to point out exactly how dangerous Mum's body weight slammed at high force onto the baby will be.

Fucking idiots. YANBU.

LauriesFairyonthetreeeatsCake · 16/11/2012 16:40

meh

I just don't care about seatbelts and car seats that much. There's enough to get squinky about without adding that shock about that.

TENDTOprocrastinate · 16/11/2012 16:45

Are you sure she didn't put baby in a car seat after she got into the car? I sometimes do this.

Bogeyface · 16/11/2012 16:47

Tend I used to do that if DD was in her sling as it was safer than trying to support her and get her out of it at the same time without dropping her!

YABU to be shocked, sadly it happens alot. YANBU to be disgusted at their lack of care.

kittyandthegoldenfontanelles · 16/11/2012 16:47

Are you serious, Laurie ?

DecAndAnt · 16/11/2012 16:49

You don't care about seat belts?
When would you care? when your child is flung through the windscreen maybe?

claraschu · 16/11/2012 16:50

Maybe they were moving the car 1 minute down the road at 15 MPH. Of course they should use the car seat, but sometimes it really isn't worth it, and yes I know that most accidents happen within 5 miles of home.

LauriesFairyonthetreeeatsCake · 16/11/2012 16:51

yep, I just can't get shocked at it - she may or may not have put the baby in a car seat, she may only have been going 50 yards down the road, she may have put her seatbelt on after - there's just so much actual abuse/neglect/issues to get annoyed at I just can't work up the energy to be shocked. They didn't even have seatbelts, car seats, and there was no law to wear them when I was a child.

LauriesFairyonthetreeeatsCake · 16/11/2012 16:53

er, no I don't care or get shocked by others and seatbelts. I have to make sure children in my care wear them, so I do.

But doing other parents thinking for them about something that may be minor?, No.

mumsfretter · 16/11/2012 16:53

Look it's all odds isn't it. You're far more likely to get run over walking across the road but I'm sure your kids do that.

Ok ok! I hear you screaming that it's damage limitation and that you HAVE to cross the road but they don't HAVE to not put kid in car seat.

I just think people get too worked up I mean how do you know they weren't only going a few yards at walking speed.

And what has the fact they looked very well to do with anything...judge judge!

whizmum · 16/11/2012 16:54

People used to go through the windscreen when I was a child.

People often walk away from rather worrying accidents with just a few bruises these days.

Cortana · 16/11/2012 16:55

If you can't be arsed to ensure your child is safe and secure as possible in a car I'd call that neglect Lauries. Neglecting to keep your child safe from harm. I mean if you can't be arsed to fasten a buckle for your child you're not much of a parent.

Havingkitties · 16/11/2012 16:55

YANBU. If they are in a crash and the baby dies it amounts to manslaughter doesn't it? And it's neglectful to child safety. I remember that safety advert where the grown up boy in the back wasnt wearing his seatbelt, was hurled into the back of his mothers seat when they crashed and crushed her. Could you imagine crashing and then crushing your own baby? Such a horrible thought Sad

FeckOffCup · 16/11/2012 16:59

YANBU, its bloody stupid to take a risk like that even if you are just going a short distance. I hope they get caught and charged for not using car seats before the baby comes to any harm.

ihatethecold · 16/11/2012 17:00

It really is one of my bugbears. It just makes no sense to me.
My neighbour frequently takes he dd4 to school without her seatbelt on. She literally hangs out of the window.
Drives me nuts.
She also illegally parks at school. Angry
Makes me soooo stabby !!!

CordeliaChase · 16/11/2012 17:06

I was once a car go past fully loaded. In the back there was a woman sat with a toddler on her lap Angry so fucken stupid! It was a fast and busy road ffs. It takes seconds the strap your child into a car seat, they are there for a reason. They make the big metal box travelling at high speeds surrounded by other big (and bigger) metal boxes travelling at speed to be that bit safer.

CordeliaChase · 16/11/2012 17:07

Once saw even. Swear this iPhone has a mind of its own. Sorry about typos BlushAngry

Lilylightfoot · 16/11/2012 17:12

my DDad went through the windscreen at 15 mph.His face was mess, he grow a beard to hide the scars.

poopnscoop · 16/11/2012 17:18

My mum lost her sister at age 15 when they hit a tree and she was the only one (of 4 occupants) who hadn't put her seat belt on. Be wise, buckle up.

CatsRule · 16/11/2012 17:19

There were no seatbelts when I was wee too but there are good reasons why they were introduced.

They couldn't of been going just down the road as it was a shopping industrial place with no housing nearby for at least a couple of miles.

And she definitely didn't transfer baby to a car seat, that's what I initially thought she was doing...I sometimes do that if it's been raining but always secure him in his seat before driving off.

I wasn't quick enough to get their reg number unfortunately, there was even a police car there, albeit empty, that they drove past!

Clunk Click every trip.......

gordyslovesheep · 16/11/2012 17:28

That was Jimmy Savile - OMG seat belts are BAD

NoraGainesborough · 16/11/2012 17:32

I don't care if they went 10 yards or 10 miles. I don't care how slowly they drove. Somebody could still drive into you at speed.

Its stupid and there is no excuse for putting your childs life at risk like this.

WiseKneeHair · 16/11/2012 17:39

Laurie
I have a graph somewhere that shows the deaths due to RTA's.
Since seat belts were made a legal requirement, rates have reduced significantly.
Coincidence? I think not.

WiseKneeHair · 16/11/2012 17:39

Sorry, OP YANBU.
