Just parked up and saw a family, mum, dad, two kids and a baby go into a car.

Baby was in a sling with mum. The mum jumped.in the back seat, no seatbelt on, baby still in sling and they drove off....no intention of putting the baby in a car seat!

I'm Shock and Angry at their blatant disrepect for their own lives and that of their baby.

Looked like a very well to do family!

Why is it 'safe' to carry a baby on a bus but not a car?I know cars have baby seats, but the way bus drivers lurch around is dangerous and far worse than most car drivers. I do use a car seat though...but surely rules should be applied to all vehicles, compulsory baby seats and seatbelts in buses OP?

diddl · 16/11/2012 17:44

".no intention of putting the baby in a car seat!"

How do you know that?

Unless you saw that there was no car seat?

InNeedOfBrandy · 16/11/2012 17:45

It is not always illegal to not wear a seatbelt. You saw one moment in time and assumed they were a family yes? How do you know for sure the driver was not a taxi driver? Also for unexpected trips where you wouldn't go regularly it is not illegal to not wear a belt/strap baby in either.

CatsRule · 16/11/2012 17:45

I agree fallingsun...I've been on a bus twice with my pram and I'd rather walk! Same could be said for why is it ok to have a pran in a black cab too.

OP posts:
CatsRule · 16/11/2012 17:49

They were very much a family inneedofbrandy...I heard them talking and it wasn't a taxi, it certainly didn't have a badge nor the type of car to be a taxi here. If she intended to strap baby into a seat then why do it mid motion and not before they move off?!

yanbu.

I recently found out it was ok to report them to the police. So I'm doing it next time I get the reg number, pisses me off when kids aren't belted in.

InNeedOfBrandy · 16/11/2012 17:59

I personally think all taxis should have those booster seats in the seats that can raise up, anyone know what I'm on about? I wouldn't judge some random woman getting in the car with her baby on her lap though because I don't know the reason and there are circumstances that it is legal.

LynetteScavo · 16/11/2012 18:00

YANBU, OP

TellyRotsYourBrain, I would have had to say something. If there had been a crash, and the girl had gone through the windscreen, it would have been very much your business.

Sadly some people are still very uneducated about the risks of traveling in cars without appropriate restraints.

LynetteScavo · 16/11/2012 18:02

I think there should be seat belts in buses which go over a certain speed.

I am not happy that DS travels to school on a double decker bus with no seat belts.

YANBU about the seatbelt, you are BU about them being well to do. So you'd expect it from the lower classes then?

bloody snob

peanutMD · 16/11/2012 18:06

You don't actually need a car seat for an emergency trip.

You don't know why they got in the car, it could have been to head for a day out which would be wrong but could just as easily have been to get to A&E to get to a relative when they don't normally use a car so wouldn't have a seat.

Well it didn't look an emergency as they sauntered back to their car with bags of shopping.

In my experience clippedphoenix the so called lower class don't think they are above the law...rightly or wrongly, I observed this family looked well off, expensive car, nicely dressed, spoke well so I expected common sense to follow!

It wasn't a snobbery judgement believe me.

I do, however, hope they and their baby got to where they were going safely.

Laurie, you can't really be serious, surely?

The only conclusion that can be drawn from an opinion like that is that the holder is either very silly or intentionally stirring.

I really can't fathom a responsible person really having that opinion.

CatsRule · 16/11/2012 18:25

MrsDeVere you said:

What is wrong with people? Do they want to live my life? Do they want their lives to be shattered into a million pieces?

I'm sorry if this has been too personal for you...it sounds like you have some experience .

The mother may have had the baby and the sling surgically attached to her so it wasn't even physically possible for her to put the baby in a car seat. And they were probably driving 50 yards in an emergency trip to attend to a dying relative.

(Since we are looking for bogus reasons why it was ok for this to have happened and why the OP is much worse for having committed the sin of judging.)

Laurie if you can make a car journey safer for your child just by strapping them into a car seat why wouldn't you?? It only takes a few seconds.

I can't imagine ever being so careless. The mum with the baby in the sling in the op is shocking.

I totally agree...my ds can be very opinionated about not liking his car seat but never would I drive off no matter what distance or speed without him being safely secured in...even if it is a battle!
