DH, DS and Xbox.

Dh thinks nothing of putting the Xbox on and playing for ages on halo while ds (14 months) is toddling round sting in the lounge. (we don't have a playroom - that's where all his toys are) I HATE it. I know ds doesn't 'understand' but it feels so wrong to me. Dh thinks its fine and I'm just trying to be annoying and previous.

I think playing on an X Box for hours is wrong anyway....I think if he is playing violent games then you need to set it up in the bedroom or somewhere your son is not going to see it. YANBU>

He's teaching his child that to spend endless hours on a mindless activity whilst ignoring those around them is perfectly acceptable.

If it's violent or has bad language in it needs to be away from your DS. He is not old enough to understand, but is old enough to find it upsetting, have bad dreams etc.

Oh come on not every gamer is a loser! There's parents now off a generation where we grew up with gaming.

However, op, your dh is being unreasonable engrossing himself in any game whilst ds is about.

I don't mind him playing in general, he enjoys it and finds it relaxing, and he works hard all week etc, but surely it's not too much to ask that he keeps it to the evening when ds is in bed and I am on mumsnet

I think you need to curb it now so it doesn't keep happening when your DS is old enough to know what's going on. That's when you've begun to lose the battle.

I also have nothing against computer games and will occasionally sit and play on the xbox, but not when the DCs are around, and especially not something violent/not age appropriate on the odd occasion they are still up when it's on.

Playing those games, fine if he wants to, after children's bedtime not before. I don't drink wine until after bedtime :D

Op if you dont have somewhere else the xbox can be set up then he should be waiting until ds is in bed.

DP has an xbox and to be honest he very rarely plays it when DD is awake and when he does violent games are an absolute no-no. She's 9 months and this has been in effect from when she was a few months old.

YANBU. I would not be happy if DH played any kind of violent computer game let alone in front of our toddler.

YANBU, even at 14/15 months a baby will absorb what's going on around him or her. Violent movies and/or games are a no-no in this house while kids are around.

Neither DP or myself play age-rated games (above a PG or 7) around DS. It's always been the rule even when I was with XP and DS was under 1.

You wouldn't watch a violent horror film with them in the room, so why would you play inappropriate games?

Your DP sounds selfish, though. Nothing to do with computer games - he could be just as selfish if he had another all-consuming hobby (or addiction - they can be addictive) which he pursued to the exclusion of all else.

dont see the big deal tbh your ds is too young to be aware of anything as long as their is no bad language. Dh plays any of his games while ds 13 months is playing nearby but not if ds1 who is 7 is around as he IS aware.

I do watch horrors during the day when ds1 is at school and it's just me and 6m old snuggled up.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to be about that! Nothing wrong with a bit of gaming (though I can't stand COD etc myself due to violence - prefer puzzle/platform etc) if it is just a hobby! No more mindless than watching a bit of telly surely.

But playing violent games for hours on end, when your little one is able to see it, rather than actually interacting with said child, yes of course that makes you a total loser, IMO.

Trifle was a bit harsh with the 'loser' comment, but tbh, if my DH would rather sit twiddling with an Xbox than play with our DS I would find that a bit weird. And teenager-like. Sorry.

It IS a bit sad for a grown man to sit mindlessly killing fake people on a computer or whatever. it just is.

We don't watch horror films whilst the children are awake (or at all really) and I would put COD / Halo in that category. He should wait until your DC is in bed.

I think that the sad / loser comments are really judgemental, everyone has hobbies / interests that others don't understand, including those calling others losers. I understand the gaming bug, played puzzle / platform games before DC (and then had no time whatsoever grrr) and there is a skill to it and it can be really addicitive. Its just another way to unwind.
