to ask vegetarians

whether it was reasonable to respond in this way.
Made a comment about burning hand whilst roasting sunday lunch.
Received a reply from a "friend" who said "more ouch for unfortunate animal you were roasting"
I felt this was quite rude but not sure if I am being objective as not vegetairian myself.

Just write back and say, 'Not really, they're already dead'.

I'm a veggie btw but that doesn't make other people's snidey remarks any less irritating.

No it was rude. I might make a comment like that to dp our my housemates as a joke, but they would realise it was a joke because that's our shared humour. Would never make a comment like that seriously and especially not to anybody but dp or my housemates.

But, I am not vegetarian for the cute fluffy animals and couldn't give a toss about them, I suspect that she feels differently!

I am not vegetarian but I would say it was rude. Especially if she is vegetarian for ethical reasons. Probably just what she thought. Possible could have had more tact though.

Perhaps she felt you speaking about roasting an animal was insensitive to her feelings?

Yes, it was rude. Eating meat is a personal choice, just like smoking or drinking or whatever. If I don't agree with a friend's choices, I would refrain from commenting.

Do you think it was meant as a joke? Was it a fb comment?

Yes it was a facebook comment. Not sure if meant as a joke. We were once good friends but rarely see each other now due to me moving away.

I'm a veggie and I probably wouldnt have made any comments like that, mainly because I would assume they'd make a friend uncomfortable. (Unless it was misplaced humour, which I'm a master at Blush ) However, it is the sort of comment that a 'veggie on a mission' might make (are u at all convertable? Smile )

The other thing is, was she in the room? I would have sympathy if she was. Christmas Day is hideous for me as there is nowhere in a house to escape roast turkey smell. Argh!!!

Let's just say that there was another incident where something was said that I was a little put out by but I let it go.
I moaned about someone (a stranger) and she replied something like much better to tackle them than moan on here.
God I do sound really petty.

I'm veggie...and I hope you were not burned too bad. Anyway vegetarians are not one breed. She sounds rude and preachy and not much fun to be around.

I have my moments of being horrified by how we treat animals but it is usually when I am on my own thinking too much. I would never foist that on someone else unless they asked.

It was rude but ha sorry you deserve it! I can't respect meat eaters' choices, sorry. Doesn't mean I'll act on it or challenge people in the way your friend did, but I think you were both....in the wrong, to put it clumsily.

Now for the ton of bricks.

I don't eat meat and on my visits to my mum in the UK she always makes me chicken as a welcome home meal. We have had the same conversation for 7 years. I let it go but it drives me crazy as chicken and birds are my bugbear because of the way they are treated as non living creatures. I can see both sides but would never say that to anyone, it is just silly.
Hope your hand is ok, I burned myself cooking broccoli the other day.

What a twat! I'm not sure if rude is the word but if she wasn't joking then she sounds like a complete douchebag.My response would be to assume she was joking. Something like "Haha yeah I'm sure I saw the little bugger smile when I did it" If she was joking then all good, if she wasn't then hopefully she would be offended. Win win.

She's entitled to her opinion. OP if she's meant to be a friend why is this even an issue? Are you not comfortable with having your meat eating commented on?

Just ask her not to make these comments again, if she's a friend she will won't she?

It sounds like more of a not especially funny joke. Obviously you both know that there is a dead animal involved in your Sunday roast, so its not as if she is introducing a new idea into it, IYSWIM, though technically she is wrong as long as you weren't cooking it live.

Its not the kind of thing that I would put on facebook personally though, its a bit of an ambiguous comment.

If she wasn't joking she was being a twat sorry. Please don't roll out the "everyone is entitled to their opinion" trump card. Yes she is absolutely entitled to be a vegitarian, she is also entitled to think those that eat meat are cruel. However when she chooses to preach this view on an open forum when the issue of vegetarianism had not even been raised, I am then entitled to call her a twat......as you are entitled to disagree [wink
She is a twat in the same way that someone who responded to a post of " So happy to announce that I'm pregnant" with " This world is already too overpopulated you are being very selfish" is a twat.....or a comic genius depending on context [ grin]
