to ask vegetarians

whether it was reasonable to respond in this way.
Made a comment about burning hand whilst roasting sunday lunch.
Received a reply from a "friend" who said "more ouch for unfortunate animal you were roasting"
I felt this was quite rude but not sure if I am being objective as not vegetairian myself.

Ex reformed veggie here. It was rude.

Littlesurprise · 15/10/2012 10:09

These forums are a bit of fluff, and I don't have anything to prove here. But thank you for your concern. Smile

The hippies of which I speak are those who consider themselves ethical vegetarians... The ones MIL charmingly labeled 'card-carrying' vegetarians. I would also say that 'self-righteous' is part of the criteria, but then I would just be saying the same thing twice.

maddening · 15/10/2012 10:09

Not the nicest comment but wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Little - would rather be a fucking hippy than a fucking prick - and you're more of a fussy eater than an actual vegetarian by the sounds of it.

WorraLiberty · 15/10/2012 10:13

Bugger!

Now I'm singing in my head..."I aint no Hippy Prick" Blush Grin

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 15/10/2012 10:13

How does the commenter know it was the meat you were roasting? You could have caught it on the spuds :)

A bit unnecessary and smug.

MaMattoo · 15/10/2012 10:14

It's stupid. Ignorant obviously. Therefore rude. Block person from commenting on your status. I am not veggie but making remarks like that show a lack of sense.

advance01 · 15/10/2012 10:15

Maybe I should reply Yes poor nut roast. Because yes there was definately no reference to meat.

OP posts:
Littlesurprise · 15/10/2012 10:17

Oh no! Are you saying my membership is revoked? Sad ...guess I'll have to find something with a bit more substance to feel validated.

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 15/10/2012 10:20
Hmm
Procrastinating · 15/10/2012 10:25

It is a fact, but rude to say it.

My children think meat is disgusting but I teach them to keep that opinion to themselves.

We are a whole household of stupid fucking hippies, clearly.

maddening · 15/10/2012 10:27

Maybe there's a fussy eaters club? Or you could try some environmental campaigning - not because you like the environment though as that would be a genuine reason Grin

Littlesurprise · 15/10/2012 10:35

I think you're confusing dietary classification with smug ego massage.

MsElisaDay · 15/10/2012 10:36

It wasn't necessarily a rude comment, it depends on the context really.

Some close friends I would say that to as a joke - ie the friends who tease me about being a tofu munching hippy. It's all good-natured and they would know I wasn't being serious.

However, if you don't already have that sort of ongoing 'joke' with this friend, and it sounds like you don't, then she was being a bit rude.

monkeysbignuts · 15/10/2012 10:41

I am veggie and no stupid hippy. I have been for 23 years and its a choice, I don't mind other people eating meat and I don't judge anyone that does.
I also know that not everyone can afford to eat free range as it is more expensive. This is a supermarket issue, they should only sell free range which would force all farmers to only rear free range and bring down the price a little.
I do get very upperty regarding caged eggs though, its not much more for barn eggs and they are a whole heap kinder.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 15/10/2012 10:44

It sounds rude unless that's the way you joke with each other.
(haven't eaten meat for 28 years and I wouldn't say that)

LeBFG · 15/10/2012 11:10

Littlesurprise. I'm rather Shock at the use of stupid to categorise a whole raft of people who believe they are doing something, if only a little bit, for animal welfare/save the world, whatever their ethical stance is. 'Stupid' just reveals your arrogance.

Noqontrol · 15/10/2012 11:18

So if you're vegetarian for ethical reasons that means you are also a stupid fucking hippy? What an intelligent well thought out comment. How super clever you are. You will go far with well considered debates like that.

maddening · 15/10/2012 11:25

I think little likes to think he/she is "different" and "off the wall" whilst being just another bod who likes to think they are wildly unique

sandylion · 15/10/2012 11:45

I actually have a "vegetarians can be assholes too" for barbecue occasions. In all seriousness I hate that shit. It makes me embarrassed to be a veggie. After 17 years of no meat I know one thing, being a tool is not the way to get people to like you.

DameFannyGallopsAtaGhost · 15/10/2012 11:50

So littlesurprise - you have no beliefs at all? No personal ethics?

quirrelquarrel · 15/10/2012 11:51

People who won't eat meat because they're stupid fucking hippies or whatever really piss me off.

You sound a load of fun. And I can't work out what it really means. It is ridiculous Grin

fraserboysmum · 15/10/2012 11:54

As she's 'had a dig' at you before on fb i'd say she sounds like she is angry that you are no longer 'good friends' .... just post what ivorjackhugholantern said, i'm a vegetarian and that cracked me up !

theodorakis · 15/10/2012 12:07

Sandylion, please, please don't wear it in front of your children. My dad wore a "Don't Blame Me I Voted labour" badge to my plays and parents evenings in the 80s. I have never recovered.

BonaDea · 15/10/2012 12:10

YANBU - I once ended an 18 month relationship with a man who was a raging vegetarian (he even wore non-leather shoes) for an equally stupid snipey remark about a slow cooked lamb recipe I was cooking.

Boomerwang · 15/10/2012 12:21

It was rude. Even if it was a joke, it was a rude joke. Nothing so boring as an ex-smoker or a vegetarian or vegan who has to go on and on about it. I went vegetarian for a year after watching BUAV propaganda (I was a young teen) but it never occurred to me to mention anyone else's meat eating habits.

I was a bit pissed that nobody took me seriously, though. It's hard to become a vegetarian, apparently.

I firmly belong in the 'fucking hippy' category because I didn't stick to vegetarianism for very long.
