What is the point of the strikethrough convention? It's appearing everywhere, as a kind of "extra thought" or "unsaid though" or "changed opinion".

This kind of nuance used to be expressed through word choice or grammar, but it seems now the strikethrough is becoming a very lazy way of expressing oneself. Especially on forums like MN or blogs.

YABU

It's fun to write something sarcastic and cross it out.

PenisVanLesbian · 07/08/2012 15:13

YABU. It's another way to add emotion, tone and unspoken content to text only communication. It's like, enriching, or something and useful when you want to be a snarky bitch

kirsty75005 · 07/08/2012 15:13

Every time I've seen it the strikethrough convention means something quite specific - the thing struck through is a sociably unacceptable thought and the thing that follows is the sociably acceptable euphemism that replaces it.

I think it's quite an effective and economical way of expressing that and can't think of any equally concise way of expressing the same thing. What's your expression.

Empusa · 07/08/2012 15:26

You're online, in case you hadn't noticed there are all sorts of shortcuts for communication, emoticons for example.
