to --hate-- HATE the strikethrough convention that is becoming common?

What is the point of the strikethrough convention? It's appearing everywhere, as a kind of "extra thought" or "unsaid though" or "changed opinion".

This kind of nuance used to be expressed through word choice or grammar, but it seems now the strikethrough is becoming a very lazy way of expressing oneself. Especially on forums like MN or blogs.

usualsuspect · 07/08/2012 15:31

here

AmandinePoulain · 07/08/2012 15:31

That looks rather complicated it's easier on here

RichTeas · 07/08/2012 15:32

Well, all you clever cloggs, the fact is that most of your comments don't even require the strikethrough to impart the same meaning. Occasionally some brackets could be used or other adjustments, but the reality is that strikethrough is in most cases superfluous. It may be fun to some, but I find it annoying to have to read through something that has striked through. Angry

HipHopSkipJumpomous · 07/08/2012 15:33

HipHopSkipJumpomous · 07/08/2012 15:34

You're right, it's not as complicated as it first appears, it was all the HTML speak at the top that frightened me Grin

WoodlandHills · 07/08/2012 15:37

i like it-it helps to convey what is lost from not being face-to-face; goes some way to replace facial expressions, and adds nuance

Ketuk · 07/08/2012 15:38

YABU as you would know if you'd been here long enough

icecold · 07/08/2012 15:38

are you proper annoyed richtea?

A very very under-rated biscuit IMO

IfElephantsWoreTrousers · 07/08/2012 15:43

killjoy what's the harm? It's fun to feel able to type the things you know you shouldn't really say/think/feel and have a built in convention for expressing this. YABU.

maytheoddsbeeverinyourfavour · 07/08/2012 15:43

It's lazy? Grin I think that is one of the funniest statements I've read on here Grin surely most of social networking is 'lazy'? Maybe we should all just stop mn'ing and send each other telegrams Grin

SlinkyB · 07/08/2012 15:47

YABU. I fecking love it, for all of the reasons already mentioned.

I actually sometimes think in strikethrough in RL

TheCraicDealer · 07/08/2012 15:49

I love strikethrough! Only this afternoon I was lamenting its omission from Hotmail! YABVVVU
