What is the point of the strikethrough convention? It's appearing everywhere, as a kind of "extra thought" or "unsaid though" or "changed opinion".

This kind of nuance used to be expressed through word choice or grammar, but it seems now the strikethrough is becoming a very lazy way of expressing oneself. Especially on forums like MN or blogs.

I love it when it's used wittily but hate it when it's used in AIBU to drip feed, or add that irritating, behind the hand, self-justification, eg, 'My so-called MIL insists when she bothers to visit her only grandchild on lecturing telling me not to let her only grandchild my DD ride on her barely trained slobbery dog..." etc.
