To buy a Nespresso machine?

Two of my friends have them and are able to produce lovely coffee. Just like that. I was brought up on a Nestlé boycott, and understand the reasons why. I still avoid Nestlé products, but this one is testing me.

My friends have made me so much nicer coffee than I can burn for myself on my stovetop expresso maker.

I have had the odd Kitkat over the years, don't tell my mum! But with these machines you have to buy pods or tabs from Nestlé to fit in the machine.

One of my friends said they have created a formula pod that goes in the machine and comes out regulated, right temp formula.

Sod ethics - Nespresso machines are the dogs! I love mine. Thought they'd sorted out their CSR issues anyway?

Dprince · 21/07/2012 20:18

I went into their shop at the Trafford centre and had a free coffee. I love it and am saving for one. It was so much easier, cleaner and quicker than any others I have had.

YABU.
All those silly little pods - why?
Just get yourself a good espresso machine - Gaggia, Pavoni, Jura - much cheaper, better coffee, and less foil-y waste.
cannot for the life of me see the pint of those silly little pods.

YusMilady · 21/07/2012 20:20

Get one. They're amazing. And get one of the dinky little milk frothers while you're at it Grin

E320 · 21/07/2012 20:20
  1. How long will these pod be available?
  2. Can you only use the bespoke pods in the machine?
  3. I recently bought, what I thought was going to be the coffee equivalent of a rampant rabbit - Swiss made - total rubbish, took it back today.
  4. Ditch stovetop and look at Braun drip machines. You have to grind the coffee or use ground ( and who the blazes thought up pre-ground WTF???).
  5. Can you tell I have had a bit of coffee aggro this week?

You just need to get yourself a decent Gaggia, and find a good source of coffee (our local independent coffee shop grinds to order). Much more satisfying and a lot cheaper in the long run. (I am firmly in the "silly little pods" camp too, can you tell?)

HmmThinkingAboutIt · 21/07/2012 20:21

If you object to Nestle then why are you even considering selling out your principles because something is nice?

Surely there are other brands who have similar machines... ones that ultimately don't have a complete monopoly (and price control) over every cuppa you make.

coffeeinbed · 21/07/2012 20:24

And all coffee grounds go on the compost and are great for the garden and the silly little pods are poison for the environment.
I love my espresso, I'm passionate about it, but a Nespresso - over my cold dead body.

DoodleAlley · 21/07/2012 20:24

I have a nespresso and love it. I love all the choices of different blends.

I doubt they'll go busy at their prices! I'm much more likely to wear out my machine first!

But if it clashes with your principles then that's your decision.

DitaVonCheese · 21/07/2012 20:25

YABU. Aside from the Nestle thing, every time I think about Nespresso I feel a little bit more disappointed in George Clooney :(

crochetqueen · 21/07/2012 20:31

Love Love Love my machine. I used to have a manual one - all that fiddling with ground coffee and then it goes off if you don't use it every day and all that cleaning out.....it's quick and easy and the coffee is fab - much much nicer than my old machine.

Yes, I get the principles and the expense but still cheaper than a "take out" and I often grab a nespresso from the machine and take with me.

I don't have the coffee every day so it suits me really well as I always know I have the pods and that the coffee will taste fresh. Might be pricey if you, say, drank 3 or 4 coffees a day.

As you can see I'm a convert Grin

Viperidae · 21/07/2012 20:32

I had a Tassimo machine which was good but it sprung a leak. All of these machines are not repairable, once they break that's it.

I'm debating a Nespresso but am not quite sure. Tassimo makes more than just coffee, it does tea, hot choc, herbal teas, etc whereas Nespresso is just coffee.

LentillyFart · 21/07/2012 20:34

I'd get one quicker than shit off a stick if I could afford it right now. SIL has one. I covet it hugely. Fabulous coffee. However - the Nescafe Espresso instant is a pretty damned good alternative in the meantime - and I hate instant coffee with a passion but this stuff is very very good! Give it a try!

FellatioNelson · 21/07/2012 20:37

Just get one. There are no alternatives that come even close, in terms of quality of the coffee and ease and convenience of use. NOT EVEN CLOSE.

Just do it.

Sparkletastic · 21/07/2012 20:37

The used pods get collected and recycled. I don't do shit coffee and I don't do faffing about like a poncey barista. I say again - Nespresso = dogs.

FellatioNelson · 21/07/2012 20:38

The Tassimo coffee sucks. It seriously sucks. It should not even call itself coffee. There is no comparison.

LentillyFart · 21/07/2012 20:39

Agree about the Tassimo - expensive pods and shite coffee too. I think I Freecycled mine - took about three goes to get rid of the fucker!

Dprince · 21/07/2012 20:40

Sparkle your last post has confirmed it. I want one. :)

Sparkletastic · 21/07/2012 20:42

Do it Dprince!

TheNamesTheyAreAChangin · 21/07/2012 20:48

YABU

Nestle

Viviennemary · 21/07/2012 20:48

I'm not keen on the idea of pods. But can't be bothered with making really coffee. But if I'm offered one that's OK. Douwe Egberts coffee is certainly the best instant I've tasted.

Iteotwawki · 21/07/2012 20:49

YANBU - my brother has one and it's awesome. They have one with a milk frothing jug attached, makes the most amazing latte. I wanted to bring one back with me but we didn't have the weight allowance spare.

JFDI!

Viviennemary · 21/07/2012 20:49
