To buy a Nespresso machine?

Two of my friends have them and are able to produce lovely coffee. Just like that. I was brought up on a Nestlé boycott, and understand the reasons why. I still avoid Nestlé products, but this one is testing me.

My friends have made me so much nicer coffee than I can burn for myself on my stovetop expresso maker.

I have had the odd Kitkat over the years, don't tell my mum! But with these machines you have to buy pods or tabs from Nestlé to fit in the machine.

One of my friends said they have created a formula pod that goes in the machine and comes out regulated, right temp formula.

We've had a tassimo but the coffee wasn't that nice. Now we have a dolce gusto, and my DP adores it. I loved it at first but now I'm a bit... Meh. We have a coffee drip machine as well. It's good but for some reason we didn't use it much, think its because we like lattes and all the facing about heating and frothing the milk, making an espresso for each etc was annoying.

We used to get coffees from Italian place in town or costa. So in the long run, the dolce gusto has saved us a lot of money.

I like the look of your machine Waspie.

I guess some of the choice of coffee machine has to depend on what type of coffee you like best.

I'm a skinny latte fan and I prefer non frothy milk, so I often microwave the milk for the first one of the day and I like that I can have a really strong espresso in with it. When Im not rushing I use the steamer and don't froth the milk. Obviously it also does plain espresso or black coffee just as easily with the same beans. I like doing Mochas too, so that's at least four different coffees with the same coffee ingredient.

I'm quite liking hearing other people's coffee habits on this thread Grin

Any other coffee addicts might like to know about Cafe Nero chocolate covered coffee beans. They are divine, the best ones I have ever tried and they come in a convenient handbag friendly box.

PHILIPS SENSEO

Cheap, easy, convenient, and I live on the Extra Dark pods from Douwe Egberts. The whole lot goes on the compost as they're like teabags.

I wouldn't touch Nestle with a barge pole and often go without in Spain as I'd rather drink water than buy their coffee or ice cream on holiday.

Sorry can't link as sleeping toddler's head is in the way........

eatssleepsfeeds · 22/07/2012 20:07

I've got a Citi Z Nespresso machine. I really, really love it. When trying to juggle a baby and a toddler, I really don't need to be washing up things and cleaning machines. (I'm lucky if I get to drink a whole mug in one go!) The pods are sooo convenient. I only make lattes - a whole mug of frothed hot skinny milk with a shot of espresso. Lovely and quick and delicious. Use a load of different pods to have a variety of flavours. I honestly prefer that coffee to any other coffee I ever have out!

HecateHarshPants · 22/07/2012 20:13

Envy I'd love a coffee machine. I'm not allowed to have one. Angry apparently, I am such a coffee addict that I would be high as a kite all the live long day.

This may well be true, but it's still not fair.

Stateofplay · 22/07/2012 20:18

I have one. It was given to me. I get the pods cheaply through work.

However I've never enjoyed it, as every coffee leaves a bitter aftertaste as my ethics feel that bit more watered down. Blush

Those pods are not very environmentally friendly, although an Italian company has just won a court battle to produce compatible ones for Nespresso machines (but cheaper, naturally).

Yes, I think Nestle is still a very unethical company. I don't think they have a marketing policy that is directly responsible for killing babies in Africa any more. But they are certainly and aggressively promoting highly-processed, high-fat food products in the developing world which will only spread the obesity and related health crisis to more poor - and less uneducated - souls. But they are certainly not the only company - or Government - doing that...

Stateofplay · 22/07/2012 20:19

Sorry, link here - worldradio.ch/wrs/news/wrsnews/italian-rival-nespresso-capsules-win-approval.shtml

NB, I don't work for Nestlé!

KittyFane1 · 22/07/2012 20:58

Dita:Kitty other companies being dubious too doesn't make Nestle better Nestle have a bad reputation for good reasons!
Nobody said it makes it any better. Just saying that Nestle is a company whose activty has been highly publicised. A lot of big companies are not ethical IMHO.

difficultpickle · 22/07/2012 21:43

Wow, I emailed them to ask if the capsules are available to buy and had this response straight back

Dear bisjo

Thank you for contacting us. We offer two difference types of capsules, the ones that are compatible with Nespresso machines, these are available in all four of our London stores. (Please see below the link to our website) The second are more universally compatible they will need to be ordered only through our wholesale department.

With fervent best wishes,
Luciano.

Very impressed. Not good if you aren't in London but handy for those of us who are.

Stateofplay · 23/07/2012 11:05

Good stuff bisjo, glad you managed to track the alternative capsules down. I like 'fervant' best wishes. That's different. Is that an Italian thing I wonder? Anyway, good customer service...

I know they're already for sale in continental Europe as well, for those outside the UK.

LookBehindYou · 23/07/2012 11:08

Very interesting. Thanks for tip Stateofplay.

ninjawomble · 23/07/2012 18:58

I've got a Dulait coffee machine from an offer from a well known discount coupon company ! ÂŁ69 for the machine and sample of 50 pods. You can use any caffitaly pods so not tied to any coffee manufacturer. The pods can be re-cycled. Wouldn't be without it.

irishchic · 23/07/2012 19:15

I have been thinking of buying the Nespresso too, I have only heard good things about it, and have tasted the coffee and think its great!

MissBetseyTrotwood · 23/07/2012 19:19

We have the KRUPS version and it's lovely. You can get reuseable pods you can fill with ground coffee.

TheSkiingGardener · 23/07/2012 19:29

I've had a Gaggia, a Krups and a Senseo and used Tassimo and Dolce Gusto machines at work. I now have a Nespresso.

If you dont want a Nespresso then work out how much effort you are going to put in each time you want a coffee. I loved my Krups machine and bean grinder, but after years upgraded (or so I thought) to a Gaggia. They have been bought by Phillips (I think, certainly by someone) and the machine quality was crap. It was the little Color one and the reviews on the web will tell you everything g you need to know. The guarantee is worthless too as you are responsible for paying to ship it to them for repair. Such a shame.

Tassimo is absolute crap, Dolce Gusto tastes ok but isn't really good quality and the milk is reconstituted. Senseo makes a lovely cup of filter coffee, they do do an Espresso adapter but it's only available in Europe and isn't that great.

So my Gaggia died, a year after buying it. And I decided that with DS being 2 I wanted quick and easy, so we have a Nespresso Lattisima. High quality coffee, ground to spec and sealed in a capsule. Tastes fabulous and has lots of varieties so different people can have different strength/blends of coffee. I was tempted by a bean to cup machine, but that's just one lot of beans at a time, no good if I'm on decaf and DH isn't.

I love my Nespresso and every single capsule is recycled. It suits us right now.

jeanafpqx · 26/08/2013 17:08

I have Gaggias and i am very happy for that :) You can find it on Ebay if you want.
