To buy a Nespresso machine?

goodasgold · 21/07/2012 20:15

Two of my friends have them and are able to produce lovely coffee. Just like that. I was brought up on a Nestlé boycott, and understand the reasons why. I still avoid Nestlé products, but this one is testing me.

My friends have made me so much nicer coffee than I can burn for myself on my stovetop expresso maker.

I have had the odd Kitkat over the years, don't tell my mum! But with these machines you have to buy pods or tabs from Nestlé to fit in the machine.

One of my friends said they have created a formula pod that goes in the machine and comes out regulated, right temp formula.

Whoa Whoa Whoa,

Now I am currently considering buying a coffee machine for my 1-2 coffee a day habit, but I was thinking of the A modo mio range instead....am I being an idiot? Should I reconsider? Too many choices..............Hmm

Dprince · 21/07/2012 20:53

sparkle I am jealous. Envy Would try and make it to the Trafford before it closes, but leaving a 16 month old upstairs asleep on its own is frowned upon I believe. :)
I feel badly done by sat here with a cup of tea. Brew

Sparkletastic · 21/07/2012 20:57

Your time will come Dprince....

Dprince · 21/07/2012 20:59

Thanks sparkle. :) I would order one off the interweb but I have no idea which I want.
Will make sure I go in the week. Free coffee in the shop as well.

goodasgold · 21/07/2012 21:00

Is there an alternative that is not Nestlé? That makes nice coffee really quickly and no chance of burning. My FIL is coming over next week, he likes instant coffee. Cheap instant. I like espresso, I burn it sometimes, well all the time.

I'm going to have a look at thenamestheyareachangin link.

I expect that I can't buy the machine.

goodasgold · 21/07/2012 21:05

I just skimmed the link, thank you, I needed reminding. No coffee in the world will help me in the mornings when I haven't been able to sleep at night. I'll stick to burnt espresso for me and instant for guests.

I bought one at John Lewis a couple of months ago. The tiny Krups one, which is perfect for our tiny kitchen. Didn't bother with the milk frother thingy. ÂŁ125 with ÂŁ40 John Lewis vochers back, so ÂŁ85.

Best money I have ever spent. Every single morning I am delighted with it. The coffee is so delicious.

I've stopped buying coffee out, as I can't see the point any more!

feelingfull · 21/07/2012 21:11

Isn't there a Tassimo one as well which is capsule and not Nescafe?

Also, are the capsules really environmentally unfriendly due to the waste? (I read somewhere, not sure where)

goodasgold · 21/07/2012 21:19

God I am jealous of anybody who can buy one without the guilt. I can't, and I won't. I will look into Tassimo.

Cheers all. I know they make nice coffee.

Just coming on to praise my tiny Krups machine (so dinky, fits on top of our fridge, coffee perfect every time etc) but I see fufulina has already said it my piece for me!

Do it OP!

TheCountessOlenska · 21/07/2012 21:21

Sorry X posts - or Don't do it OP Grin

NaturalNatures · 21/07/2012 21:21

Op I have a d'longhi (sp?) coffee beast, percolated, espresso, milk frother all in one machine. Makes perfect coffee, it's the milk frother which adds that umph. Got mine for a ÂŁ5 in a charity shop and couldn't live without it.

You can buy ground coffee but you can also get beans of different sorts for a special treat as well which you can secretly hide for yourself

Always keep grounds/beans in the fridge, that's what gives it an umph too.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 21/07/2012 21:28

We've had our nespresso machine for 6yrs+ and it's still going strong. I don't really like coffee but we have the milk frother and I love it. DH is a coffee freak and he wouldn't buy anything else now. The coffees are excellent, no need to clean it through really & you can buy the descaling kit that we use just once a year.

We've had the ground coffee machines but spent more time cleaning them out than brewing coffee!

Warning: you might become addicted Grin

feelingfull · 21/07/2012 21:51

So I would never buy and Nespresso and I don't buy Nestle products. However, when at my friend's last week he did ask me whether I wanted a coffee, and I knew it was a Nespresso and I said yes and it was lovely.

Generally, when I am offered a Rowntrees Fruit Gum (my fave sweets in the world that I haven't eaten for for 4 years), or a choc from a tin of Quality St I politely decline.

What do other non-Nestle purchasers do when faced with someone giving/offering them something?

justabigdisco · 21/07/2012 21:52

a) ethically dubious, to say the least
b) poncey

inabeautifulplace · 21/07/2012 22:15

c) Not as good as a real machine.

WhereYouLeftIt · 21/07/2012 22:23

All those pods - don't they create a huge amount of non-recyclable waste?

goodasgold · 21/07/2012 22:40

Fruit Gums...used to be Rowntrees, still taste so nice. (Sorry mum!)

I like all you other mnetters that object to Nestlé.

No way am I going to buy the lovely coffee dispensing machine. To me it's one thing buying sweets or something, like a Kitkat, but another to buy a machine that requires a regular input for pods. No way. Jarred instant or burnt espresso wins, over giving a company money to send infants to their death in the name of profit.

I was brought up on this, the fact that nothing has changed and now I am an old gimmer, this company is pants. I will not buy into it. I wbu to want a machine.

Please recommend me alternatives, anything but Nestlé.

DitaVonCheese · 21/07/2012 22:44

Feelingfull I eat them Blush I reckon by that time the money has been spent/damage done anyway.

Resist, OP! Wink

Tempted by Krups one for DH now.

BrianButterfield · 21/07/2012 22:45

I grind my own Lavazza beans etc etc but my friend's Nespresso does make gorgeous coffees. I could never buy one though.

gomez · 21/07/2012 22:50

Pods are collected for re-cycling along with new pods for gawjuss coffee making.

itsthequietones · 21/07/2012 23:20

goodasgold - I admire your strength, it's about bloody time I started to boycott Nestlé products. I'll finish the two jars of coffee in the cupboard then it's onto burnt espresso for me too.

irishchic · 21/07/2012 23:31

Is burnt espresso an actual type of coffee or actually just, well burnt coffee?

goodasgold · 22/07/2012 00:02

Just burnt coffee. Its rank, I can't offer it to my friends,or my FIL.

OP posts:
Gingerodgers · 22/07/2012 00:23

I love the ritual of grinding my own beans, then making expresso like a barista. Tho I have enjoyed nespresso coffe from friends, I decided that I did in fact want all the faffing around that went along with coffee making. My local kitchen shop gave us3 machines on loan before we made a purchase, finally deciding on the most bloody expensive of course! Decide whether guilt will spoil the pleasure, if it will, then choose something else.
