I have mine arriving in the post today. Grin

amillionyears · 01/06/2012 08:13

That wil have far more impact on where they end up.People like on the whole to work with people who are self controlled.

merrymouse · 01/06/2012 08:14

It is amongst our pool of children that the next lot of talented footballers will emerge, the path-breaking scientists, mind-blowing artists and writers. But not head of state.

Obama's duties and power are rather different to the Queen's. The children in the line of succession get very little choice about their job and are constantly in the public eye and criticised in the papers. I don't think it's a very fair state of affairs, but I think my children have the better end of the deal.

merrymouse · 01/06/2012 08:19

But if she wanted to cause mischief and she certainly could.

I don't know - there's about 62 million of us and only 1 of her - she can't do magic.

worrywortisworrying · 01/06/2012 08:20

Agree wholeheartedly with Merrymouse

Hullygully · 01/06/2012 08:25

Lol, a millionyears, by your reasoning we should all accept that it is ok that our political system legitimises and perpetuates the class system. We should celebrate that system, instead of trying to change it.

Teach our children that the monarchy is a wonderful thing, the class system it epitomises is great.

And when everything goes tits up because those with power and connections screwed the rest, well, just throw a street party to celebrate the class system...

amillionyears · 01/06/2012 08:38

Your last 2 posts have all been about the monarchy.
Now you have moved the goal posts.

Hullygully · 01/06/2012 08:39

noddyholder · 01/06/2012 08:42

The ma'amsnet thing literally makes me feel ill.

amillionyears · 01/06/2012 08:43

I do sometimes think mumsnet does not hold to principles.
The email from them this morning, cant be bothered to reread it,says something along the lines of,even if you are a replublican we all enjoy a good party!

ExitPursuedByABear · 01/06/2012 08:58

I watched a programme about the Coronation yesterday evening (from a historical perspective you understand) and interestingly the Dukes who had to beg allegiance to the Queen were all a bit sniffy apparently as many of their families had much stronger links and 'rights' to the throne going back hundreds of years and saw the Windsors as usurpers.

Tis Whit Friday here in sunny Saddleworth which means our 'traditional' Brass Band contests. Enjoy the long weekend everyone, whatever your feelings about it.

Hullygully · 01/06/2012 08:59

Bread and circuses.

Elderly, disabled and vulnerable people are having income and services slashed left right and centre but oh look! Some bunting and a sparkly crown!

Can someone tell me...where is this Royalist fervour that you all speak about? The only piece of bunting I can see is the one on top of this web page. Haven't heard of any street parties, no celebrations at school as far as I'm aware, nobody has mentioned it at work, seems a total non-event in this neck of the woods.

Perhaps I should open up my house as a small haven for disgruntled Republicans?

noddyholder · 01/06/2012 09:29

I agree cory no sign of it here either. There are plenty of old people who have worked their arses off for 60 years (and she hasn't no matter what her supporters think) and they are getting nothing. Out local 99p shop is full of union jack tat but haven't heard of one party

Josephine
"Polly Toynbees article in the Guardian is the biggest evidence of why the Monarchy is so popular. Here we have an miserable cunt-faced cow of a woman, who has led one of the most privileged lives anyone in Britain could ever face.."

Charming.

Disagree with her opinions, but it is not necessary to call her a "cunt-faced cow of a woman".

Actually, I could be persuaded to go with Cat's idea of stripping the Queen of her powers etc. I still want her to be there, but she (and her successors don't need to have these powers).

How have the other European countries done it? What about the Dutch?

I like the idea of the Queen being an independently funded (ie from their great wealth) head of the country, a figure-head.

FoofyShmooffer · 01/06/2012 10:26

My 3 year old DD is now a Republican.

Why? (you may not ask)

She went to a jubilee party on Wednesday at nursery and you know what?

The Queen didn't even fucking turn up.
To her own party.

FrothyOM · 01/06/2012 10:43

Grin @Foofyshmoofer

I am pissed off at DD's school. They have made such a big thing of this and now she is cheering the twatting Queen when she sees her on TV! Angry That's not state education thats state fucking indoctrination.

I am angry for all the reasons flatbread articulated so well. I feel DD is being brainwashed into accepting the status quo. Angry Angry Angry

Hullygully · 01/06/2012 10:58

Who was going on about Syria before?

What i think is obscene is that other human beings don't have enough to eat or clean water and we are spending SHITLOADS on this jubilee insanity.
