To wish smokers would only smoke behind closed doors?

mamabellasworld · 29/05/2012 09:09

I know this is going to be a rant and that my fellow mumsneters are probably going to have a go at me but anyway:
I am so fed up with people smoking outside/in the garden/on the balcony etc.
We live in a lovely block of flats with a huge garden which in summer would be brilliant for DD to play in. If only it wasn't for the fact that whenever I spend more than 10 minutes in the garden playing with DD, someone somewhere is certain to light up. There seems to be a perpetual smell of cigarettes in the air and I just detest that.
Even when I just want to open our windows, especially in summer, I could not just leave them open and do other stuff- or I'll come back to a room smelling of other peoples smoke.
I know they are legally entitled to smoke where they want as long as it is their garden or balcony, but it really annoys me. I find it strange that someone would got outside to smoke because they don't want the smell in their house and I get it in mine instead...

Oh for fuck's sake. Go to the park then or head off out up a mountain. You have access to a huge garden? Is there a filthy smoker lurking in every corner blowing great wafts of smoke at you?

Pootles2010 · 29/05/2012 09:12

Yes you're going to get flamed for this, and rightly so. Sorry, but living in close quarters with others, as you do, you have to put up with them! They probably get annoyed with your children's noise.

Do you really think other people should live their lives according to what will be least annoying for you?

WorraLiberty · 29/05/2012 09:12

Bonfires

BBQs

Car fumes

Bus fumes

Restaurant smells

The list of smells out there is pretty endless really. Unless you lock yourself in a bubble, you have to suck it up really.

bronze · 29/05/2012 09:13

Yes shut them in their houses killing their children instead

Dropdeadfred · 29/05/2012 09:15

I know what the op means, even though it is unreasonable to expect people not to smoke in their own gardens it is horrible when the smell blows into your garden and open windows - the smell of bbqs etc doesn't bother me as much

lemmein · 29/05/2012 09:15

They might deliberately smoke knowing you'd be precious about it & keep your noisy kids inside!

picnicbasketcase · 29/05/2012 09:16

Sorry, but it's far better for people to smoke outside. I don't see how anyone can complain about people smoking outside unless they are standing next to you blowing it into your or your child's face. The vague smell drifting over to you is not a massive problem.

civilfawlty · 29/05/2012 09:16

I think that's a bit harsh. OP is just wishing - she isn't actually proposing draconian measures. Fact is, if you don't like the smell of cigarettes then you're stuffed: they are everywhere and you just can't avoid it. Not unreasonable to wish it wasn't so.

FeakAndWeeble · 29/05/2012 09:16

Having a fag in your own garden is one of the last havens of peace offered to us horrible, manky smokers.

I can't even stand outside work and have a fag in my lunch break without some judgey twat one pulling this face at me Hmm

YABVVVU and irritating.

I'm a veggie and the smell of cooking meat makes me want to heave. But I don't go around moaning at people for having BBQs all summer long.

Get over it.

LtEveDallas · 29/05/2012 09:16

I know this is going to be a rant and that my fellow mumsneters are probably going to have a go at me but anyway

So why post - unless you want a fight?

I don't get posters that do this, really I dont Confused

StetsonsAreCool · 29/05/2012 09:17

Well you know YABU so

If you can smell the smoke in your house from leaving windows open, then chances are they can too. Smoke doesn't just make a beeline for the inside of your house.

Suck it up. Or move to the middle of the country with an acre of garden to keep smokers at the furthest possible distance from you.

bunnybabylon · 29/05/2012 09:18

if it's a huge garden surely there is somewhere for you to play with your dd away from smokers?

really though you wouldn't go anywhere if the smell bothered you so much, do you think you may be a little over sensitive?

redrubyshoes · 29/05/2012 09:19

Why not just tell them to put it out then if it bothers you that much? Hmm

ElectricSoftParade · 29/05/2012 09:19

YABU.

Sirzy · 29/05/2012 09:19

I wish nobody smoked but people choose to and expecting them not to smoke in their own garden is just daft.

The ones that annoy me are the ones who congregate at the doors of the hospital smoking. Our local peads a and e has a sign up asking people not to smoke outside the ambulance entrance!

WorraLiberty · 29/05/2012 09:21

You should sit in my garden around dinner time.

I live in a very multicultural area and at times the smell of all the various dinners being cooked and mixing in the air, is totally vile.

But I accept I live here and not out in the middle of nowhere on my own.

RobinSparkles · 29/05/2012 09:22

Hmm, I suppose YABU but I agree with you.

It does make me laugh that people smoke outside so that their house doesn't stink of cigarette smokes - um, yeah, your house still stinks mate! They don't seem to realise that the smoke smell gets on their clothes and their skin so their bedding and furniture still smell. Confused

BumpingFuglies · 29/05/2012 09:23

I agree it's annoying and it probably won't be long before smoking on balconies will be banned. With the garden, it would probably be better to have a designated area for smoking.

RobinSparkles · 29/05/2012 09:33

We lived in a small block of flats with DD1 for a while. The lady in the next flat used to smoke in the doorway (not a balcony but french doors with a railing on iyswim) and the smell used to knock me sick a bit when I had our doors open but hey ho never mind, she's in her own home, she can do what she wants etc etc. What used to drive me mad was that she used to throw her fag ends into the garden that we shared. When I used to go out to play with DD there were always loads all over the grass for me to pick up to stop toddler DD from doing so. Why couldn't she have used an ashtray and put them in the bin?

SarahBumBarer · 29/05/2012 09:34

Is it s communcal garden Mamabella?

If so YANBU at all. I got bloody fed up at the park the other day of the sheer volume of the lungfuls of cigarette smoke DS and I were exposed to. FFS can't people see it is not appropriate to smoke in children's play areas? Does And don't get me started on the ruination of pub beer gardens.

Yes you will get flamed for this. The fact that people chose to flame you for a valid and perfectly reasonable opinion does not mean you are wrong or unreasonable - it probably just means they are defensive.

LST · 29/05/2012 09:36

You deserve a real good flaming for this op

YABVVVU

Mrsjay · 29/05/2012 09:39

do ALL your neighbours smoke I have images of a huge smoking den Hmm i know smoking is vile but move away from it go to the bottom of the garden it takes a few minutes to smoke a cigarette then it goes away , far better they smoke outside than in imo

BumpingFuglies · 29/05/2012 09:40

Why should the OP get a flaming? It's her opinion and a valid point.

bunnybabylon · 29/05/2012 09:42

lol at 'you deserve a flaming'

aibu really is nuts isn't it

mixedberrymilkshake · 29/05/2012 09:44

BumpingFuglies Valid to not expect people to smoke in their own gardens/balonies?

YABVVVVU OP. And I think you know that.
