To wish smokers would only smoke behind closed doors?

I know this is going to be a rant and that my fellow mumsneters are probably going to have a go at me but anyway:
I am so fed up with people smoking outside/in the garden/on the balcony etc.
We live in a lovely block of flats with a huge garden which in summer would be brilliant for DD to play in. If only it wasn't for the fact that whenever I spend more than 10 minutes in the garden playing with DD, someone somewhere is certain to light up. There seems to be a perpetual smell of cigarettes in the air and I just detest that.
Even when I just want to open our windows, especially in summer, I could not just leave them open and do other stuff- or I'll come back to a room smelling of other peoples smoke.
I know they are legally entitled to smoke where they want as long as it is their garden or balcony, but it really annoys me. I find it strange that someone would got outside to smoke because they don't want the smell in their house and I get it in mine instead...

eliza I would perhaps think of moving, not because of the smokers as such, although if they are smoking unreasonably and won't accommodate you that's reason, but because of the road. The fumes from that can't be good for your son's cough.

Shakey1500 · 29/05/2012 11:42

I've some sympathy but, I don't get it? Unless they are teeny, foot square gardens and the neighbour is leaning over the fence/wall chain smoking a packet of fags and blowing each puff of smoke directly into faces? A large proportion of the smoke must be carried away on the breeze yes?

I can't imagine it's any more than an intermittent whiff, ever half hour or so (of the whole time spent in the garden/direct vicinity) Some exaggeration methinks.

Hippymum89 · 29/05/2012 11:57

I'm gonna light the bonfire, get the barbie going and smoke a fag while I'm at it Wink

Hippymum89 · 29/05/2012 11:59

Every so often one of the neighbours has a joint, I just sniff the air and think of the good old days!

LST · 29/05/2012 11:59

We were them neighbours that light a BBQ at the first wiff of sunshine last week hippy Grin

We were all done and dusted by 8.30pm though due to bath time haha

WorraLiberty · 29/05/2012 12:02

Cooking smells aren't toxic though.... So how do they compare to cigarette fumes?

Because neither will do you fuck all in the way of harm out in the open air.

And because they are both smells that some people find nasty or nice.

Hippymum89 · 29/05/2012 12:02

Grin LST.
Bet these anti-smell people all give their kids toxic fruit shoots ha ha ha

I have thought of moving a million times but due to credit crunch, loss of hours, pay its not possible we only get like for like which is terraced house.

we have had the lot here - problem neighbours - i am lukcy to only have three smokers at the min, used to have 8 - 10 and more on one side! hOUSE FIRE, had to move out, a bloody nightmare.

RE Smoking,

isnt the main point though that you have a habit that you MAKE other people share, when they dont want too?

your invading thier space? and as smoking is regular - you do it on a regular basis?

would you like people to have loud music playing every single night?
when we live in tighly packed spaces shouldnt we just try and keep our habits or lifestyle to keep tentacles from reaching into someone elses space as much as possible.

i have a massive stack of stuff i can burn at the ned of garden. peoplekep saying - put a match to it - but i am not, i would rather live with it - than flood about 20 houses with my smoke.

i love music - i would have my music up every single day if i could, but i dont because of the neighbours!

I used to smoke. When I still smoked a thread like this would have sent me into a tail spin of addict-fear-defensiveness. I would have been saying 'It's a perfectly legal activity, I'm funding the bulk of the NHS from the tax I pay, it's a free country blah blah' while having a cold sweat at the idea of a world where I was banned not only from smoking indoors in public places but also in parks, within a certain distance of buildings etc (like LA).

Now, after quitting 18 months ago I cannot stand anyone smoking anywhere near me and I want to apologise to every single person I ever puffed smoke at.

Al0uise · 29/05/2012 15:53

When I was foolish young it seemed that all the skinny, trendy, arty, beautiful, succesful people smoked and I could see why smoking might be an attractive affectation. These days the only smokers I ever see are fat and unhealthy Jezza Kyle entrants. There's no appeal there for anyone surely.

It's an addiction though. I'm sure smokers don't aspire to look like anyone in particular.

The same as I'm sure over eaters don't aspire to look fat and unhealthy either.

Al0uise · 29/05/2012 16:02

The physiological addiction to nicotine takes 3 days to leave your system. Once 3 days are up it's all will power.

Lol. Maybe the beautiful slim types are more discreet, or you live in a bad area.

WorraLiberty · 29/05/2012 16:06

Yes I know, I gave up years ago.

However, I'm not sure what that has to do with wanting to look/not look a certain way.

People feed their addictions to stop the craving, is what I'm saying.

Ephiny · 29/05/2012 16:07

I dislike the smell of smoke too, but it's just part of living in a high-density area unfortunately. We sometimes get smoke from our neighbours on the other side of the garden fence, or from people just walking by or stopping to chat in the street. Same with being able to hear other people's music or TV, or their kids playing in the garden/street, or their dogs barking, or their barbeque/bonfire blowing smoke over your washing, the fumes and noise from their cars etc.

I do have some sympathy because it is unpleasant and annoying (I don't even like when I end up walking behind a smoker in the street) but they're not actually doing anything illegal or unusual, which means there's very little you can reasonably do about it. Sometimes the only thing you can control is your own reaction, and you might have to decide that it's not worth it, and not good for you, to get so upset and stressed about things you can't change.

IAmNotACowbag · 29/05/2012 16:08

Maybe they gave up, got addicted to food instead, and said "fook it I'm avvvinnn a faaaayyyaaaag coz I is fat" and began again.

FeministPixie · 29/05/2012 16:13

Some people aren't allowed to smoke indoors if they have a rented place. My landlord is cool with it, so I am lucky and smoke inside.

if beer gardens are annoying in the summer, why don't pubs that have the space make a smoking and non-smoking section?
