To wish smokers would only smoke behind closed doors?

mamabellasworld · 29/05/2012 09:09

I know this is going to be a rant and that my fellow mumsneters are probably going to have a go at me but anyway:
I am so fed up with people smoking outside/in the garden/on the balcony etc.
We live in a lovely block of flats with a huge garden which in summer would be brilliant for DD to play in. If only it wasn't for the fact that whenever I spend more than 10 minutes in the garden playing with DD, someone somewhere is certain to light up. There seems to be a perpetual smell of cigarettes in the air and I just detest that.
Even when I just want to open our windows, especially in summer, I could not just leave them open and do other stuff- or I'll come back to a room smelling of other peoples smoke.
I know they are legally entitled to smoke where they want as long as it is their garden or balcony, but it really annoys me. I find it strange that someone would got outside to smoke because they don't want the smell in their house and I get it in mine instead...

scuzy I want to start again.. The only reason in not smoking is for my son. And if we ever get a sitter and go out the first thing I do is light up...

TantrumsAndBalloons · 29/05/2012 10:11

You are not unreasonable to dislike the smell of smoke.

However to say that your dd can't go and play in the "huge" garden in the summer because of the smoke and that you sit indoors with your windows closed otherwise your house will reek of cigarette smoke is a little bit ludicrous

Shakey1500 · 29/05/2012 10:11

Iam I think it will still be legal (think of the tax loss for thr government otherwise!) but smoking will only be permitted in a private home.

I really resent this ban. I totally agree that non smokers should be able to be in an enclosed environment and not inhale smoke. BUT to go to an "all out" ban without even considering the idea of having "smoking pubs" and "non smoking pubs" was unfair. It worked well in Spain. Blue sticker on the door for a smoking bar, red sticker for smoke free. People had a choice.

However we are the only nation who immediately bows down and scrapes the floor to comply. In Greece, for example, there is a ban on establishments over a certain square footage. They don't give a toss. There's still ashtrays everywhere. People smoke everywhere despite the ban. They shrug and carry on Grin

scuzy · 29/05/2012 10:12

oh LST fair play. i was off them for 3 years while i was pregnant and went back on them. am ragin i did now i am as bad as ever!

MajorRalphSpanky · 29/05/2012 10:12

Have you seen this thread in Chat?

WorraLiberty · 29/05/2012 10:15

I'm a non-smoker, and I think it's a horrible habit. However I am pretty fed up with the constant demonising of smoking. If people want to smoke, let them and accept that it's their choice

Same here. It's the pearl clutching and the drama llamas that do my head in.

Live and let live ffs. I don't like the smell of it either but then I hate the smell of garlic too.

IAmNotACowbag · 29/05/2012 10:17

shakey Will the private home include the garden, do you think?

It's fookin ridiculous is what it is I tells ya!

MajorRalphSpanky · 29/05/2012 10:17

Grin PMSL D0oin, I'd love to be with you to see that. [evenmoreevilgrinthand0oin's]

LST · 29/05/2012 10:17

scuzy bad isn't it..Sad Being pregnant I just stopped. I seriously don't know how I've kept at it for so long. As soon as I have a drink my other hand gets bored..

D0oinMeCleanin · 29/05/2012 10:23

LST you can get nicotiene free refills for ecigs. The tatse of the nictotine ones is actually quite authentic, I'n not sure about the nicotine free ones but they might be worth trying if you miss it that much.

It's got to be better than going back to the fags.

Shakey1500 · 29/05/2012 10:24

Iam It better bloody had Wink

If it doesn't I'm following Mike Oldfield's lead and heading for a more tolerant, less hypocritical, less ridiculous-about-these-things country to live in Grin

It bemuses me no end the left hand of the government saying "Ooooh smoking is EVIL, it WILL kill you, you MUST give up, you are an AWFUL person for doing so" yet the right hand is "Ermmm, yeah, whilst we agree that left hand is correct...we ummm...would quite like you to carry on....because we still want your money...ta very much..that'll be £6 please...KERRRCCHHIIING!"

IAmNotACowbag · 29/05/2012 10:25

I'll join you shakey! Grin

Hullygully · 29/05/2012 10:29

SHOOT THEM SMOKIN BARSTADS

RetroMom · 29/05/2012 10:31

I want to move to New Orleans. They refused to accept the law there.

I agree with the poster who mentioned the idea of smoking pubs and non smoking pubs.

I also believe the whole smoking ban is a rouse, it wont be long and we'll all be paying taxes for "cleaner air".

You've got to hand it to them, they'll get us to pay for the very air that we breath, come hell or high water (global warming)

Olympia2012 · 29/05/2012 10:35

Cooking smells aren't toxic though.... So how do they compare to cigarette fumes?

RetroMom · 29/05/2012 10:37

Never mind smoke being bad for us, what about those of us who live on flight paths. Do you know how much fuel is being dumped on us? Now that's got to be toxic I'm sure, but hey, it's all big buck to the big cocks, so don't worry about it.

stripesnotspots · 29/05/2012 10:39

YANBU. I hate having fag smoke blown all over me in the summer when everyone's smoking outside in parks, outisde pubs etc Can't sit in half the beer gardens cos of people puffing away. Best bit is when they direct the smoke away from their own table/friends/ Dc's and blow it over me & mine. Really polite.
Smoking should be banned in all public spaces, including communal gardens & parks IMHO. i don't know anyone who smokes regularly who doesn't want to give it up, talk about giving up all the time but it's just so bl**dy hard too once you've started. The more people encouraged not to start at all cos there's no where to smoke the better.

Eggrules · 29/05/2012 10:40

Before the smoking ban I was very live and let live with regard to smoking. Since the ban I get progressively more anti-smoking every day.

Outside spaces such as beer gardens, beaches, parks and communal gardens should have designated smoking areas.

Ormiriathomimus · 29/05/2012 10:40

Burn 'em! Burn 'em! Dirty selfish feckers.

Does that make you feel any better?

Olympia2012 · 29/05/2012 10:42

It's the burning which is causing the problem, so no

2shoes · 29/05/2012 10:45

yabu but no doubt you know that.
perhaps your neighbours get fed up with your kid making a noise, but guess what they have to live with it

manicbmc · 29/05/2012 10:48

I enjoy smoking. I really do. But I don't smoke if there are a lot of people about. I smoke outside in my garden where it doesn't actually blow over to anyone else because of my house's situation. I never smoke in my house as my dp is not a smoker and I think it would be unfair on him. If I go out, I smoke in the designated area where it is less likely to bother anyone. And I never smoke around kids.

It is possible to smoke and still consider others. Those that blow their smoke all over others are generally selfish twats in all areas of their lives.

2shoes · 29/05/2012 10:49

i smoke where it is legal.

elizaregina · 29/05/2012 11:00

OP totally with you, before I had children I used to happily sit outside and smoke without realising what I was doing to my poor neighbour with children they never complained but i can see what they moved, Now its come back to bite me, I cant open my windows in summer, I instantly smell neighbours smoke on both sides, its horrid.

My DC has a bad cough al the time, we live on a busy road too.

I sit in my garden and have to breath in thier smoke.

Its so invasive! my DC harldy makes noise in the garden, no shrieking or screaming.

Honestly how would the smokers feel if the nons threw a smelly bomb evry time they smoked?

and its posinous, and bonfires drive me mad too - so selfish.

its maddness that we have all these strict smoking rules and yet some of us have our own homes flooded.

we cnt move our homes but they can smoke elsewhere.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 29/05/2012 11:24

You could move home about as easily as I could go and find a deserted field to stand in the middle of every time I want to smoke.

Live and let live.
